Troubleshooting Galaxy S10 Plus with “Contacts has stopped” error
This is one of the error messages you may encounter when you’re an Android user. This isn’t a device or app-specific problem so as long as you’re using Android, there’s always a possibility you will experience this issue. But don’t worry, there’s something you can do about it…
First solution: Force restart your phone first
The first possibility we have to rule out is a chance that this is just a result of a minor firmware issue or even a glitch. By doing the forced restart, you’re refreshing your phone’s memory as well as reloading all its apps and services. This has been proven to be effective in addressing all sorts of firmware issues and here’s how it’s done on your Galaxy S10 Plus.
- Press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t release it yet.
- While holding down the volume button, press and hold the Power key as well.
- Keep both keys held down together for 15 seconds or until the Galaxy S10 Plus logo shows on the screen.
Once the phone has rebooted successfully, open the app and see if the “Contacts has stopped” error shows up. If you were able to open the app without being greeted by this error, try creating a new contact or editing existing ones to try and trigger the error. If it still pops up, then move on to the next procedure.

Second solution: Clear cache of Contacts app
The system creates temporary files to make sure apps run smoothly after the first use. This is the very purpose of those files but there are times when they get corrupted. If this happens, performance issues may occur including app crashes. To rule out this possibility out, here’s what you need to do:
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
- Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner.
- Scroll to and then tap Apps.
- Find and tap Contacts.
- Tap Storage.
- Touch Clear cache.
After this, open the app to see if the “Unfortunately, Contacts has stopped” error still pops up. If it does, then it’s time you reset the app itself.
Third solution: Clear data of Contacts app
Doing this will reset the app back to its default settings and configuration but don’t worry, none of your contacts will be deleted. However, it’s best to create a backup or copy of your contacts list just in case things go south. Here’s how it’s done:
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
- Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner.
- Scroll to and then tap Apps.
- Find and tap Contacts.
- Tap Storage.
- Touch Clear data and hit OK.
- Now, reboot your phone.
Once the phone has successfully reboot, open the app again to see if the “Contacts has stopped” error still shows up. If it still does, then it’s time to troubleshoot the firmware but first, let’s go after the settings.

Fourth solution: Reset All Settings to fix ‘Contacts has stopped’
This will make sure that the problem isn’t due to some incorrect settings in your phone. By doing this, you’re bring the device’s settings back to default values. It has the benefits of a factory reset but none of your files will be deleted if you did this.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
- Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner.
- Scroll to and tap General management.
- Touch Reset.
- Tap Reset settings.
- Tap the Reset settings button.
- If prompted, enter your PIN, Password or Pattern.
- Finally, tap Reset.
- Restart your Galaxy S10 Plus.
After the reset, open the app and see if the “Contacts has stopped” error still pops up and then move on to the next procedure if it still does.
Fifth solution: Delete the system cache
We’ve already deleted the app’s cache but it didn’t fix the problem so it’s time to delete the system cache itself. Just like an app cache, it could also get corrupted and if it happens, issues like this may occur. So, follow these steps to wipe the cache partition and see if the “Contacts has stopped” error still shows up:
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Galaxy S10+ logo shows, release all three keys.
- Your Galaxy S10 Plus will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step.
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
- Press Power key to select.
- Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
If the problem persists even after this procedure, then you have no other choice but to reset your phone.

Sixth solution: Backup your files and reset your phone
A master reset will fix this issue and other app-related problems but we don’t recommend this solution without exhausting all possible solutions first. But this time, it seems that you’re running out of options. So, create a copy of your important files and data as they will be deleted. After that, remove both your Google and Samsung accounts so that you won’t be locked out of your device after the reset. Once everything is set, follow these steps:
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Galaxy S10+ logo shows, release all three keys.
- Your Galaxy S10 Plus will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step.
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
