Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 went completely dead and won’t turn back on (easy steps)

We have some readers who were complaining about their Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 that, according to them, turned off by themselves and refused to power back on. If a phone goes completely dead and no longer responds, there’s a chance that it’s an issue with the hardware or it could also be just a minor problem with the firmware since smartphones won’t work if there’s an issue with either of them. Fortunately, most of issues like this are not really that complicated to fix and there’s a chance you can figure it out on your own.

In this post, I will walk you through in troubleshooting your phone to make it turn on and respond again. This is not the first time I encountered this issue so I already know a thing or two that could help fix the problem. This issue may seem like a serious hardware but in reality and most of the time, it’s not. It’s a rather minor issue with the firmware and you can make your device respond again in no time by following these very simple procedures.

First solution: Do the Forced Reboot

That’s right! A simple Forced Restart can fix this issue and make your phone respond again because most of the time this problem is due to a firmware or system crash. Such issue is minor but could render your phone useless because the device won’t respond when the power key is pressed or even if it’s connected to its charger. In other words, it makes the device seem like completely dead based on the symptoms. But assuming that your phone didn’t suffer from physical and/or liquid, then you can make your phone work perfectly again.

To do the Forced Reboot, press and hold the volume down and power keys at the same time for 10 seconds or more. You would know if it’s successful because your phone starts up after this. However, if the screen remains black and unresponsive, try doing the same procedure a couple more times or you may try this instead:

  1. Press and hold the volume down button first and don’t let go.
  2. Then, press and hold the power key while holding down the volume down button.
  3. Keep both keys held down for 10 seconds or so.

If the problem is as simple as a firmware crash, your Galaxy J7 should already be booting up by now. After doing the second procedure and it still remains unresponsive, there’s a chance that the battery got completely drained as well. Perhaps the next procedure can help you.


Second solution: Charge your phone and do the Forced Restart

The thing about battery drain issue is that it may also lead the phone to crash since some hardware components and services may not be properly shut down when the device runs out of juice. If a system crash can make the phone unresponsive, having a drained battery makes the problem even worse. But just like most of the issues, there’s always something you can do about it:

  1. Plug the charger to a working wall outlet. It’s imperative you use a wired charger.
  2. Using the original power / data cable, connect your phone to its charger.
  3. Regardless whether the phone shows it’s charging or not, leave it connected to the charger for 10 minutes, at least.
  4. Press and hold the volume down button first and don’t let go.
  5. Then, press and hold the power key while holding down the volume down button.
  6. Keep both keys held down for 10 seconds or so but this time while the phone is connected to its charger.

Other things you should try if your phone is still not responding after the second solution is to wipe its cache partition or do the Master Reset. Both can be done in recovery mode. Here’s the thing, the moment the phone boots up in recovery mode, you can already consider the problem as fixed since the device already turned off. The issue is automatically downgraded from a power problem to a minor booting issue, which means it’s not as complicated anymore.

This is how you wipe the cache partition or do the Master Reset:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds, then ‘No command’ before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe cache partition” or “wipe data / factory reset.”
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

After all these and the problem hasn’t been fixed, then it’s time you brought the device to Samsung Experience or any accredited shop.
