Samsung Galaxy A20 runs slow with ‘Settings keeps stopping’ error

Troubleshooting Galaxy A20 with ‘Settings keeps stopping’ error

I tried to scour the internet for this problem and those who encountered this error have something in common; they noticed their devices to have become so sluggish and slow before the error appeared. As long as the firmware hasn’t been modified in any way, you should be able to fix your phone using the following procedures: 

First solution: Try doing the Forced Restart

When it comes to troubleshooting firmware-related problems, it’s always recommended to do the Forced Restart as the issue you’re currently experiencing might be due to a minor firmware problem. The forced restart is a simulated battery removal. It refreshes your phone’s memory as well as reloads all the services and pre-installed apps. If the ‘Settings keeps stopping’ error is a minor problem, then this will fix it. Here’s how it’s done: 

1. Press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t release it yet. 
2. While holding down the volume button, press and hold the Power key as well. 
3. Keep both keys held down together for 15 seconds or until the Galaxy A20 logo shows on the screen.

Once your phone has finished the reboot, try to see if the ‘Settings keeps stopping’ error still shows. If it does, then move on to the next solution.

Second solution: Run your phone in safe mode

I have personally encountered this problem in the past and one of the causes was an app that I installed. It is possible that you’ve installed an app that has some issues or there might be apps whose installation files have been corrupted. To know if this is the case, you have to run your phone in safe mode to temporarily disable all downloaded applications. Here’s how it’s done: 

1. Press and hold the Power key until options show. 
2. Tap and hold the Power off option until it changes into Safe Mode. 
3. Tap the Safe mode icon to restart your device.
4. Once the reboot is successful, you should see ‘Safe mode’ at the lower-left corner of the screen. 

While your phone is in this mode, try to open Settings to see if the error still pops up. If the issue is fixed, then it’s confirmed that one of the apps you installed is causing the problem. This is what you need to do next: 

1. Restart your phone normal to boot into standard mode. 
2. Remember the apps you installed about the time when the error ‘Settings keeps stopping’ started to show. 
3. Once you already have an app in mind, swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down. 
4. Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner. 
5. Scroll to and then tap Apps. 
6. Find and tap suspected app. 
7. Tap Storage. 
8. Touch Clear data and tap OK to confirm.
9. Tap the back key once and then touch Uninstall. 
10. Confirm that you want to remove the app from your phone. 

However, if the error shows even in safe mode, then you have to troubleshoot the firmware.

Third solution: Wipe cache partition

The next thing you have to do about this problem is to wipe the cache partition because it possible that it’s caused a corrupt system cache. By wiping the cache partition, you’re deleting the old cache and replacing it with a new one. Here’s how you do it: 

1. Turn off the device.
2. Press and hold the Volume Up and Power keys.
3. When the Galaxy A20 logo shows, release all three keys.
4. Your Galaxy A20 will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step. 
5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
6. Press Power key to select.
7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the ‘Settings keeps stopping’ error still pops up after this procedure, then move on to the next solution. 

Fourth solution: Perform the Master Reset

After doing the first three procedures and your Galaxy A20 still shows the ‘Settings keeps stopping’ error, the next thing that you need to do is reset. As long as the firmware has not been modified, you should be able to get rid of the error message and make your phone work perfectly again.

But before you actually reset your phone, create a copy of your important files, especially the ones that are saved in your phone’s internal storage. After the backup, remove your Google and Samsung accounts so that you won’t be locked out after the reset. After doing all that, follow these steps to reset your phone: 

1. Turn off the device.
2. Press and hold the Volume Up and Power keys.
3. When the Galaxy A20 logo shows, release all three keys.
4. Your Galaxy A20 will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step. 
5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
6. Press Power button to select.
7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes’ is highlighted.
8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
