Fix Galaxy S10 Plus with Nova Launcher that keeps crashing

I personally use Nova Launcher on my Android phones as I like the way the icons are arranged and customized. While I like the new UI of Galaxy devices, there will come a time that your eyes will look for something new. If you’re one of the users of this launcher and are currently being bugged by a similar problem, here are the things you need to do:

First solution: Force restart your phone first

The first thing you have to do if you’re troubleshooting app-related problems is to perform the forced reboot which will refresh your phone’s memory and reload all apps and services. It is possible that this problem is caused by a minor issue with the firmware or a result of a glitch. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t release it yet.
  2. While holding down the volume button, press and hold the Power key as well.
  3. Keep both keys held down together for 15 seconds or until the Galaxy S10 Plus logo shows on the screen.

Once your phone has successfully restarted, tap the Home key to see if the Nova Launcher still crashes or won’t work. If the problem persists, try doing the next procedure.

Second solution: Clear the cache of Nova Launcher

There are times when the cache of the app gets corrupted and when it happens, issues like this may occur. You have to delete the cache of the app so that it will be replaced with a new one. Don’t worry, none of files or settings will be deleted if you did this. Here’s how:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
  2. Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner.
  3. Scroll to and then tap Apps.
  4. Find and tap Nova Launcher.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Touch Clear cache.

After doing this procedure, tap the Home key again to see if the app still crashes. If it still does, then try the next solution.

Third solution: Reset Nova Launcher

When it comes to apps, a reset means deleting their data files that usually contains user settings and preferences. If the problem is with the app, then this procedure will most likely fix it. However, take note that your settings and preferences for the app will be deleted and you have to configure it again once it’s fixed. With that said, here’s how you reset Nova Launcher:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
  2. Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner.
  3. Scroll to and then tap Apps.
  4. Find and tap Nova Launcher.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Touch Clear data and then tap OK to confirm.
  7. Restart your phone.

Once your phone has rebooted, tap the Home key to see if the app still crashes. If it still does, then move on to the next procedure.

Fourth solution: Uninstall Nova Launcher and reinstall it

When it comes to compatibility issues, updating the apps in question will often fix the problem but there’s a more effective method in addressing this possibility and that’s to uninstall the app and then reinstall it.

By uninstalling the app, you will remove all its associations with the firmware and other apps. Here’s how you do that:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
  2. Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner.
  3. Scroll to and then tap Apps.
  4. Find and tap Nova Launcher.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Touch Clear data and tap OK to confirm.
  7. Tap the back key once and then touch Uninstall.
  8. Confirm that you want to remove the app from your phone.
  9. Restart your phone to release some used RAM.

After the reboot, follow these steps to reinstall the app:

  1. From the home screen, pull up the app drawer.
  2. Find and then tap Google Play Store.
  3. In the search field, key in ‘nova launcher’ and then hit search.
  4. Tap Nova Launcher and then touch Install.
  5. Once the installation is complete, tap Open.

After doing all these things and the app continues to crash, then it is now possible that the problem is caused by a firmware issue. The next procedure should fix it.

Fifth solution: Backup your files and reset your phone

At this point, a master reset is necessary. It will fix all software- and app-related issues however, you will have to create a copy of your important files and data as they will be deleted during the process. Also, make sure to remove your Google and Samsung accounts from your phone so that you won’t be locked out after the reset. Once everything is in order, follow these steps to reset your phone:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Galaxy S10+ logo shows, release all three keys.
  4. Your Galaxy S10 Plus will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
