How to Fix Call of Duty Lag and High Latency

Lag and high latency in Call of Duty can make online matches unplayable with rubber-banding, delayed inputs, and teleporting players. Here are all the methods to reduce lag and lower your latency for smoother gameplay.

Method 1: Use a Wired Connection

Wi-Fi introduces latency and packet loss that directly causes lag in online games. A wired Ethernet connection is the single biggest improvement you can make.

  1. Connect an Ethernet cable from your router directly to your PC or console.
  2. Disable Wi-Fi on your device after connecting the cable.
  3. Test your connection to confirm lower ping times.

Method 2: Restart Your Router

Restarting your router clears its memory and re-establishes a fresh connection to your ISP.

  1. Unplug your router from power for 30 seconds.
  2. Plug it back in and wait for all lights to stabilize.
  3. Launch the game and check your latency.

Method 3: Close Background Applications

Other devices and apps using your network bandwidth can cause lag spikes during gameplay.

  1. Close streaming services, downloads, and cloud backups on all devices on your network.
  2. On PC, close web browsers, Discord, and any apps with active downloads.
  3. Ask others on your network to pause large downloads while you play.

Method 4: Change DNS Settings

Using a faster DNS server can reduce the time it takes to connect to game servers.

  1. Change your DNS to Google (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1).
  2. On PC: Open Network settings and edit your adapter’s DNS.
  3. On console: Go to Network settings and set DNS manually.
  4. Restart your device after changing DNS.

Method 5: Enable QoS on Your Router

Quality of Service (QoS) settings let you prioritize gaming traffic over other network activity.

  1. Log in to your router’s admin page (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
  2. Find the QoS or Traffic Management section.
  3. Enable QoS and set your gaming device as the highest priority.
  4. Save settings and restart the router.

Method 6: Port Forwarding

Opening the required network ports ensures Call of Duty traffic flows freely to and from your device.

  1. Log in to your router’s admin page.
  2. Find the Port Forwarding section.
  3. For PC: Forward TCP 3074, 27014-27050 and UDP 3074, 3478, 4379-4380, 27000-27031.
  4. For PlayStation: Forward TCP 1935, 3478-3480 and UDP 3074, 3478-3479.
  5. For Xbox: Forward TCP 3074 and UDP 88, 500, 3074, 3544, 4500.
  6. Save and restart your router.

Method 7: Disable VPN

VPN connections route your traffic through additional servers, adding latency to every packet.

  1. Disconnect from any active VPN.
  2. Close the VPN application completely.
  3. Launch the game and check your latency.

Method 8: Update Your Network Drivers

Outdated network adapter drivers can cause packet loss and high latency on PC.

  1. Open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start button.
  2. Expand Network adapters.
  3. Right-click your network adapter and select Update driver.
  4. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  5. Restart your PC after updating.
