How To Recover Data From Google Pixel 3XL With Broken Display

Problem: I dropped my Google Pixel 3XL and the top third or so of the screen was still showing, but the rest of the screen went black and was glitched out a bit. At first I could still unlock the phone and click icons and apps if I tapped where they were, but after an attempt to turn it off then back on in hopes of some improvement, the screen got worse and I couldn’t even unlock it or turn it off or anything else. I have my contacts all written down and my pictures are all saved with my Google account but I have a lot of important things in my Notepad I am trying to recover. Is there any possible trick I can do to get the screen working long enough to get it or is there any way perhaps my carrier (Verizon) can recover it if I contact them?

Solution: The best way to recover data right now on your phone is to have the display replaced first as you will not be able to interact with the device without the help of the touchscreen. You can however try to perform the steps listed below and check if you are able to backup your phone data.

Check your Google Drive account

If you have turned on the Backup to Google Drive feature of the phone then you will be able to access your data from any device.

Take note that this only works if you have previously followed the steps listed below.

  • From a Home screen, touch and swipe up to display all apps.
  • Navigate: Settings  > System About icon > Advanced.
  • Tap Backup Backup icon.
  • Tap the Backup to Google Drive switch to turn on.
  • From the account field, ensure you list the appropriate account.

Try using another Pixel 3XL as a guide

If the display of the phone is black but the touch input still works then you can still navigate the screen with the help of another Pixel 3XL device. You can swipe the screen then enable data transfer.

If the above steps don’t work then your only option is to have the display replaced at a service center.
