How To Fix LG V40 ThinQ Keeps On Scanning For Wi-Fi Network

Problem: I have a V40 ThinQ smartphone. All of a sudden it will not stop WiFi scanning BUT it doesn’t show any available WiFi networks, will not allow me to add a network. So basically I have to use this as a mobile data phone. Questions: 1. If, as has been suggested, I have picked up a virus, is this on the phone AND the SIM? Or just phone ie can I just put the sim in another phone? 2: Would in theory a factory reset sort this! Thanks

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this device it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

Regarding your question of the issue being caused by a virus, this is quite possible. The virus however will only affect the phone software and not your SIM card.

To fix this issue you should perform the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Perform a Soft Reset

Whenever your phone becomes unresponsive the best thing to do is a soft reset. This is will also work in this case as it will refresh your phone software and will usually fix most minor software glitches. The soft reset is done by pressing and holding the Power button and Volume Down until the device powers off, approximately 8 seconds, then release. When the phone turns on check if it the issue still occurs.

Reset the network settings

If you are still having issues connecting to the Wi-Fi network then you should try to reset the network settings. Take note that your Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellular settings will be reset to their default values when you perform this step.

  • From a Home screen, navigate: Settings  > System .
  • Tap Restart & reset
  • Tap Network settings reset.
  • Tap RESET SETTINGS.
  • Tap Reset Settings.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode

Sometimes the problem can be caused by an app that you recently downloaded You can check if this is what’s causing the problem by starting the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • With the screen on, press and hold the Power key.
  • In the options menu that displays, press and hold Power off.
  • When prompted to restart in Safe Mode, tap OK.
  • After your device restarts, it displays Safe mode at the bottom of the screen.

If the issue does not occur in this mode then the problem could be  caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

Your phone will store temporary data in a dedicated partition in its storage space which helps the device run apps smoothly. If this data gets corrupted then issues can occur on the device. To make sure that this is not what’s causing the problem you will have to clear the cache partition of the phone.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  • When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  • Use the Volume down button to select Wipe Cache .
  • Press the Power button to confirm.
  • Use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  • Allow several minutes for the process to complete.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step you can perform if the above steps fails to fix the problem is a factory reset. Take note that this will erase your phone data so make sure to create a backup copy before proceeding.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  • When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  • ‘Factory data reset’ appears.
  • Use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  • Press the Power button to confirm.
  • Erase all user data and restore default settings’ appears.
  • Use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  • Press the Power button to reset the device.

If the above steps fails  to fix the problem then this is most likely caused by a faulty hardware component. The best thing you can do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
