How to fix your Galaxy J5 if it won’t stay on and keeps restarting by itself

Hello Android fans! Welcome to today’s troubleshooting article that addresses #GalaxyJ5 issues. The issues we cover in this post are some of the most common problems on this device so if you’re one of the J5 users experiencing one of the problems we address, this post should help.

Problem #1: How to fix a Galaxy J5 that won’t charge

I have a samsung galaxy j5 2016 since one year . And it was working well. But some months ago my original charger wasn’t charging my phone at all.. so I took my mother’s allview charger . And it charged amazingly for some months. But since some days now my phone doesn’t charge at all. I tried again that charger and still doesn’t charge. I CHANged the cables and all.. it simply discharges while it’s on charge. I even changed the socket even.. i don’t know what to do and I took the battery out also it was looking fine. Help me please! — Sorina Madison

Solution: Hi Sorina. These are some of the common possible reasons why a Samsung device won’t charge:

  • operating system bug
  • poorly coded third party app
  • bad charging cable or adapter
  • broken charging port
  • Malfunctioning power management IC
  • other unknown hardware malfunction

As you can see, you only covered some of the items in the list above. Make sure that you factory reset your device to see if the problem is being caused by bad software. If that won’t work too, then you can assume that there’s bad hardware behind the trouble. In this case you want to let a professional take a look at the hardware. If still covered by manufacturer warranty, be sure to let Samsung do the repair.

Problem #2: How to fix your Galaxy J5 if it won’t stay on and keeps restarting by itself

Hi. I have a Samsung Galaxy J5 phone and since today, it’s been acting up. First, it started with it saying there is no network connection/SIM card. Then it would freeze up. And now, and I kept count, it would work for a few seconds before turning off and restarting itself 20 times. I’m trying to let my family know about the problem but I can’t even send out a message without it shutting down and unable to send it! It is driving me crazy! I have recently applied to some applications and I need my phone in case I got something from those applications! Please help! — Valeria

Solution: Hi Valeria. Like most issues in Android, there are multiple possibilities when it comes to identifying the cause of the problem. Let’s discuss all of the possible reasons why your J5 may be restarting on its own.

Boot to safe mode

The first troubleshooting step that we recommend in this case is to let you boot your phone to safe mode. This is to check if one of the installed apps is interfering with Android, causing it to reboot on its own. A situation like this often occurs with poorly coded apps or when there’s malware. By booting to safe mode, you’re blocking all apps and services that are not part of the pre-installed package. In other words, safe mode blocks everything that you’ve added to the system. If your J5 will work normally and won’t boot on its own when on safe mode, it means that you have a bad app issue.

To boot your J5 to safe mode:

  1. Turn your Galaxy J5 off.
  2. Press and hold the Power button.
  3. Once the ‘Samsung Galaxy logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
  4. Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
  5. Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.

To identify which of your apps is causing the trouble, you should boot the phone back to safe mode and follow these steps:

  1. Boot to safe mode.
  2. Check for the problem.
  3. Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
  4. After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
  5. If your J5 is still problematic, repeat steps 1-4.

Connect to charger while using

If the problem involves a bad battery, connecting your phone to a charger while using it may help to keep it stable, at least to allow you to do some software troubleshooting. Make sure that you’re using a known working charging cable and adapter when doing this troubleshooting step.

Reset all settings (if possible)

If still possible, you can also reset all of your phone’s settings. Some users were able to fix their Android issues in the past by doing this simple step. Its effects are similar to a factory reset minus the hassle of deleting all apps and user added data. If you can manage to access Settings app, be sure to do these steps:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap General management.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Tap Reset settings.
  5. Tap RESET SETTINGS button to confirm.
  6. Restart your J5 and check for the problem.

Factory reset

Should nothing change at this point, try booting your phone to Recovery Mode and wipe the phone by doing a master reset. Here’s how to do that: Factory reset works by returning all software settings back to their defaults and wiping all user data. Before you wipe your phone, be sure to back important user data. If you don’t use cloud services to back your files up, we suggest that you try Samsung Smart Switch. This will allow you to create an image of your phone. If you haven’t heard of Smart Switch before, make sure to visit this page: How to create backup from Samsung device to your computer via Smart Switch.

Once you’ve created a backup, follow these steps to factory reset your S9:

  1. Create a backup of your data.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Replace battery

There’s a chance that the problem may be isolated to the battery only. The good thing is, it’s easy to check because your phone’s battery is removable. So, if you can’t produce a battery replacement right away, you can borrow one and see if that will keep your phone stable. That’s the easiest way to check if the battery is functional.

Have the phone repaired

If a new battery won’t help fix the issue, that means there’s a hardware problem. Make sure to contact Samsung and set up a repair or replacement appointment with them.

Problem #3: Galaxy J5 stuck in boot loop

Hello there! I have one question about my phone. I’m currently using Samsung Galaxy J5 which is running Nougat OS version and for the past couple of hours unfornately I”m not able to use a phone anymore since it is stuck in a boot loop. in other words, it simply reaches Samsung logo and won”t show up Home Screen. I’ve tried every step in your tutorial but nothing doesn’t seem to work. I would greatly appreciate if you could help me to resolve the problem, thanks in advance. — Guest

Solution: Hi Guest. Try wiping the cache partition first and see how it goes. Here’s how:

  1. Turn off your Galaxy J5.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  4. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.
  10. It will take a little longer for the phone to reboot after this procedure but wait until it reaches the home screen before using it.

Should a cache partition wipe won’t work, do the master reset as provided above.

In case your J5 became problematic after an update, after you rooted it, or after a failed flashing procedure, try to reflash its bootloader and/or firmware. If you haven’t heard of flashing before or if you’re not confident how to do it due to the risks involved, bring your phone to your local Samsung dealership and let them fix your device.
