How To Fix The Nokia 7.1 Randomly Restarting

Problem: About a week ago, my Nokia 7.1 randomly restarted at around 6:50 in the morning. I say at 6:50 in the morning because it happened again multiple times, and every time it was around that time while I was driving to work. So, it restarts and fails to boot, just keeps showing the Nokia logo and nothing happens. A soft reset usually did the fix, but this time it won’t boot, just shows the  logo, and when it comes to starting the boot, when the animation should start, the display dims, and it should boot, the phone just restarts and shows the logo again and repeats the steps. Right when the logo moves it restarts and goes back to the still logo. I should note that I had Developer options on, and turning the options off did the thing once about two weeks ago, when it just kept restarting but succeeded to boot.

Related Problem: My Nokia 7.1 just suddenly started turning off by itself multiple times during the day yesterday. It progressively happened more and more often. Then it started not wanting to turn back on. I did a soft reset and that worked a few times, that is it turned back on. Then that stopped working. Now, the phone buzzes and shows the logo but doesn’t go ahead and turn on. Except it did once today. (I’ve probably tried about 30 times by now). Sad  It shows the logo and then goes black. Except again, about 20 minutes ago, the logo stayed on and the phone went as far as the little song telling that it is turning on….. then again it went black. I have pulled out the sim card and the micro sd card — and then I held the power button for a minute as suggested above. Same, did not turn on. Put back everything. Same, did not turn on.

Solution: One of the main reasons why a phone will constantly restart is because there could be issues with the software which is what we will be troubleshooting today.

Fully charge the phone

The first thing you will need to do is to make sure that the phone battery is fully charged. Connect the phone to its wall charger then make sure that it charges to 100%.

Start the Nokia 7.1 in Safe Mode

Once the battery is fully charged you will need to start the phone in Safe Mode. When your phone operates in this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run. This makes it easier to check if an app you recently downloaded is causing the problem.

  • When the phone is turned on press the Power key for a short while.
  • Then from the menu which shows up select “Power off” and tap until “Restart in safe mode” appears.
  • Tap “OK” and wait for a few moments.
  • When the home screen shows up the phone will be in Safe mode.

If the phone does not restart in this mode then the problem could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the Nokia 7.1

Wiping the cache partition of the phone will remove the temporary system files of the device which if corrupted can cause this problem.

  • Turn off the phone by pressing the Power button for a couple of seconds.
  • Start holding Volume Up + Power keys for a short while.
  • Connect your phone to a charger. Use the Micro USB Cable to accomplish that.
  • Let go of both keys as soon as the Android Recovery Mode pops up
  • Navigate by using Volume keys to the Wipe Cache Partition option then use the power button to select.
  • Restart the phone

Factory reset the Nokia 7.1

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. This will revert the phone back to its original factory condition. Just make sure to backup your phone data before doing this step.

  • Turn off the phone by pressing the Power button for a couple of seconds.
  • Start holding Volume Up + Power keys for a short while.
  • Connect your phone to a charger. Use the Micro USB Cable to accomplish that.
  • Let go of both keys as soon as the Android Recovery Mode pops up
  • In this menu choose “wipe data/factory reset”. Use Volume buttons to navigate and the Power key to confirm it.
  • After that use Volume keys to select “Yes–delete all user data” and press the Power button once.
  • When Recovery Mode appears again choose “reboot system now” with the Power key.

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then this is most likely caused by a faulty hardware component. The best thing to do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
