How to troubleshoot Sony Xperia L2 that can’t make / receive phone calls
If you cannot receive phone calls or SMS and MMS from a certain number, verify and ensure that the number is not blocked listed. That said, check your blocked or auto-blocked list. Remove the contact from the list, if necessary.
Also ensure that your phone is getting good signal (1-2 signal bars). You might be using your device in a place that is already out of your network range, thus cellular services are not working.
First solution: Force close Phone/Dialer app then restart phone.
For first instances, it could be just the phone app that’s glitching and therefore needs a restart. To rule this out, forcing the phone app to close can help. Doing so will clear the errant app’s memory for a better next run. Here’s what you should do then:
- Tap the App tray icon from the Home screen.
- Go to Settings-> Apps.
- Locate and tap Phone app.
- Tap Force Stop.
- Then tap OK to confirm.
After you force close the app, perform a soft reset or restart your device with these steps:
- Press and hold down the Power key for a few seconds until the menu opens.
- Tap Restart from the menu options. Doing so will trigger the device to restart automatically.
When your phone has finished rebooting, relaunch the Phone/Dialer app to make some test calls.
Second solution: Clear cache and data on Phone/Dialer app.
Your apps stored cache or temporary file every time they’re launched. The more cache files are accumulated, the bigger memory storage they take. As these files pile up, there is a tendency that some of them would crash or become corrupted. When this happens, the app would start to misbehave or worst, stop working. This is when you need to clear cache and data from the errant app. Having said that, try to clear cache and data on your phone app to wipe all app’s cache including corrupted data that might have inflicted calling problems on your device. Here’s how:
- Tap Apps tray icon from the Home screen.
- Go to Settings-> Apps menu.
- Tap to select Phone app.
- Then tap Storage.
- Tap Clear Cache option.
If you want to clear data from your phone app, tap on Clear Data option. This will delete data for the Phone app from your device permanently.
Third solution: Wipe cache partition on your Sony Xperia L2.
Aside from app cache, your device also stores cache and temporary data on system folders or cache partition. And just like app cache and data, system cache can also get corrupted at some point. When this happens, system functions will be affected and so, your device will start to misbehave or unable to carry out certain functions and routine. As resolution, wiping the cache partition is recommended. It works the same as cache clearing from an app but this time from the system cache partition. - Power off your device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up and Power buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
- When the Sony Xperia L2 logo appears, release both buttons. The Recovery screen will then appear.
- Press the Volume Down button to scroll to and highlight wipe cache partition option.
- Then press the Power button to confirm selection.
- Wait until the phone has finished wiping cache partition and highlights the Restart option.
- Press the Power button to confirm restart.
Wait until your phone restarts then try to make a test call to see if it is already working as intended.
Fourth solution: Update software to the latest version.
Software update also offer fix patches to address existing bugs including those that cause calling issues on certain device. That said, you can try updating your phone software to the latest version available. This denotes the need to manually check for new software update, unless you’ve configured your device to install software update automatically. Here’s how to check for new update on your Xperia L2:
Note: Make sure your phone has sufficient storage space, stable Internet connection, and enough power to complete the software update installation.
- Navigate to Settings.
- Tap About phone.
- Tap Software Update.
You will see a notification if a new software is available. If there is, follow the onscreen instructions to download and install the new software on your device. Or you can also schedule installation to install the new software on your preferred time.
Fifth solution: Factory data reset/master reset.
As your last resort, you can try a master reset or restore your Xperia L2 to factory defaults to wipe everything including bugs and malware from your phone system. - Create a backup of your important data stored on the internal memory.
- Navigate to Settings.
- Tap Backup & reset.

Contact your carrier or service provider for other options and recommendations if your Sony Xperia L2 still cannot make or receive phone calls.
