How To Fix Samsung Galaxy S9 SSL Certificate Error After Software Update

Problem: Hello- within the last couple of weeks I got 3 different updates pushed down to my Galaxy S9.  After the last I am at Android 9 Pie. Here’s a list of issues:

1) After the first my keyboard would not pop up in text messages. That has since resolved after the 2nd update.

2) After the 3rd update:

  1. I get certificate errors from both Chrome and Samsung Internet for all websites (including google.com). I can get to the website after I push “proceed to website.”
  2. Different apps are not working, examples:

-Nest app – will not let me log on but I am getting notifications from the cameras

-Amazon Shopping – loads, I seem to still be logged in but I get an error message no matter what I try to do

-banking app – does not load

  1. Apps that are working include Facebook, Instagram, Ring doorbell app, Gmail

I tried to log out and back in for the apps that do not work and I tried to uninstall/reinstall. Also tried to start in safe mode, clear cache on the apps, wipe the cache partition, restart several times. Nothing is working. Any advice would be so much appreciated! Thanks

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this phone it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

When you visit a website using a browser the website is first authenticated if it is indeed the correct site. Communications between your browser and the website is going to be encrypted so that the data can’t be stolen by anyone. The job of authentication and encryption is done by the SSL certificate.

When you get an SSL certificate error on your phone after a software update this is most likely caused by a software glitch which could be fixed by following the troubleshooting steps listed below.

  • Make sure that the time and date of your phone is correct. It’s best to set this automatically. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray. Tap Settings > General management > Date and time. Tap the Automatic date and time slider to turn on.
  • Clear the browsing data on your phone browser.
  • Try to switching to a different Wi-Fi connection.
  • Temporarily disable your phone security software app as this might be causing the problem.

In case the issue still persists then proceed with the additional troubleshooting steps listed below.

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

An app you downloaded in your phone could be causing this problem. To check if this is the case you will need to start the phone in Safe Mode since only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the phone off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  • When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

In case the issue does not occur in this mode then it’s likely that the problem is caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

The phone system cached data is used to speed up the access to your phone apps. Sometimes this data can get corrupted which results in issues occuring on the device. To check if a corrupted cached data is causing the problem you will need to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight “wipe cache partition.”
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step you should consider is a factory reset. This will revert your phone back to its original factory condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset as it will be deleted in the process.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Do not install any apps in your phone after the reset. Try to check first if the issue still occurs.

It’s very likely that the problem will now be resolved.
