How To Fix Samsung Galaxy S9+ Screen Has Dark Transparent Overlay

The #Samsung #Galaxy #S9+ is one of the flagship devices released by the South Korean company last year. This phone is best known for its large 6.2 inch Super AMOLED Infinity Display as well as its use of a dual 12MP rear camera system. Under the hood is the Snapdragon 845 processor which when combined with its 6 GB of RAM allows the device to run multiple apps smoothly. Although this is a solid performing device there are instances when certain issues can occur which we will be addressing today. How To Fix Samsung Galaxy S9 Screen Has Dark Transparent Overlay

Problem: Samsung Galaxy S9+ issue is more of an annoyance than anything. The screen usually has a constant darker transparent covering the top 2/3 of the full screen. Adjusting the brightness increases the visibility of this off transparent look. However, when the screen is around middle or below half of the brightness slider, it is almost not noticeable unless you look for the transparent break. I am not certain what was the cause of this because there have been multiple software updates it’s been through. I started using the blue filter overlay for the screen as it’s easier on the eyes especially at night. I am not sure if there is a problem with the integrated graphics chip or not. When screen shooting an image, it seems the transparent isn’t visible on the photos. It seems to be just a transparent overlay that doesn’t cover the full screen. I am curious if this is a common issue or not, and wondering what could the issue be? I will most likely continue to use the phone as it’s still in working condition and doesn’t effect the day to day use, just creates questions and wonder of the true cause. The difference between the blue screen filter and without are only a color shading difference to the screen, it doesn’t have any significant impact on the screen changing the mode. My theory is, when the update went through a while back with the blue screen filter on while updating, it created a minor system problem in the screen that read it as off when it was on, and caused a permanent transparent overlay in the background that still allowed another filter to be stacked on top but normally. If anyone has any thoughts on this, it would be highly enlightening. Thanks

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this device it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version first. If an update is available then you should download and install it first.

From the way you described the problem it looks like the display is exhibiting early signs of a burn in issue. This is a common issue occurring on devices with AMOLED displays and will usually occur when a static image is displayed on the screen for a long period of time. There is however a possibility that the problem could be caused by a software glitch which we will be checking by performing the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

One factor that can cause this problem is an app you downloaded to the device. To check if this is the case you will need to start the phone in Safe Mode since only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the phone off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  • When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

If the issue does not occur in this mode then the problem could be caused by a downloaded app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

The phone system cached data is used to speed up the access to your phone apps. Sometimes this data can get corrupted which results in issues occurring on the device. To check if a corrupted cached data is causing the problem you will need to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight “wipe cache partition.”
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step you should consider is a factory reset. This will revert your phone back to its original factory condition. Take note that this will erase your phone data so make sure to create a backup copy before proceeding.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

In case the problem persists after performing  the troubleshooting steps listed above then this is most likely caused by a burn in issue. Since it is still not affecting the performance of the phone then I suggest that you use your device normally. If you would like this fixed then the only way to do it is to have the display assembly replaced at a service center.
