How To Fix Samsung Galaxy S9+ Camera Is Blurry

Problem: A few weeks ago the back camera started acting up on my S9 Plus. When you open it the image you see through the lens is blurry and it could only focus on something very close to the lens. I’d exit the camera, open it again and after 2-3 times, the camera would be in focus again. But a few days ago the problem with the blurry camera became permanent, in that no matter how many times I exit and open the camera app, it’s still blurry. I tried restarting the phone, did a soft reset and also updated the software, but the problem still persists. Any advice on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps it’s best to make sure that the phone is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

Remove the phone case

If you are using a phone case then try removing this as it could interfere with the way the camera works. This is especially true for cheaper cases that does not perfectly fit and somewhat blocks the camera lens.

Clean the camera lens

Inspect the rear camera lens for any signs of smudges or dust. Use a microfiber cloth to clean the lens and make sure that it is clear so that the camera will focus properly.

Clear the cache and data of the camera app

Sometimes this problem can be caused by corrupt cached data within the app itself. To eliminate this possibility you will have to clear the cache and data of the camera app.

  • From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen.
  • Go to Settings then Apps.
  • Ensure All apps is selected
  • Locate then select the Camera app
  • Tap Storage.
  • Tap CLEAR CACHE.
  • From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen.
  • Go to Settings – Device maintenance – Storage
  • Tap CLEAN NOW.

Once this has been performed try to check if the issue still occurs.

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

One way to check if an app you downloaded is causing the problem is if the phone is started in Safe Mode. In this mode, only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run making it easier to check if a downloaded app is causing the problem.

  • Turn the phone off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  • When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

In case the camera focuses properly in this mode then it’s likely that the problem is caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

Your phone will usually store cached data in a special partition in its internal storage. The purpose of this is to allow apps to open much faster thus speeding up the operation of the device. Sometimes when this data gets corrupted issues  can occur. To eliminate the possibility of this problem being caused by corrupted cached data you will have to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  • An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  • Press Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step you should consider is a factory reset. This will revert your phone back to its original factory condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset as it will be deleted in the process.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the issue still persists at this point then you will need to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
