How To Fix Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Not Getting Text Message Notifications

Problem: My wife and i both have Samsung Galaxy Note 9’s that we’ve had since their release. About a couple of days ago or so, we both started having issues with receiving text notifications of any kind. Most times were after the phone had been on the charger all night. Either no notification at all or it would have a notification on the lock screen until it was unplugged and the screen locked back, the notification would disappear on its own. So we would never know when someone text us, until we would receive another text from someone else later after being unplugged causing us to open the app and then we would see the missed messages. People think we are ignoring them. The text notifications work fine the rest of the day. Seems like only after its been on the charger for awhile. Thanks in advance

Solution: Before troubleshooting this problem it’s best to make sure that your phone is running on the latest software version first. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first on your phone.

Turn on text message notifications settings

The first thing that you will want to do in this case is to make sure that the text message notification of the phone is turned on.

  • From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen.
  • Tap Messages
  • If prompted to change the default SMS app, tap YES to confirm.
  • Tap the Menu icon
  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap Notifications.
  • Tap the ON switch to turn on
  • Tap App icon badges to turn on
  • From the Categories section configure the sound setting. Turn on the app icon badger and turn off the do not disturb custom exception.

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

Another possible factor that could be causing this problem is an app which is you downloaded to the phone. To check if this is what’s causing the problem you will need to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the phone off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  • When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

If the problem does not occur in this mode then there’s a possibility that this is caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

Most apps in your phone will store its temporary data in a certain partition of the device. When this data gets corrupted it could lead to certain issues such as the one you are experiencing right now. To eliminate  this possibility you will need to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  • An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  • Press Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Perform a factory reset

You should consider doing a factory reset as a final troubleshooting step. This will revert your phone back to its original factory condition. Take note that your phone data will be deleted in the process so make sure to make a backup copy before proceeding.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.
