Problem #1: Galaxy Note 5 not getting app notifications

My Note 5 does not get any notifications. I’ve looked online, they all said to just turn on the notifications in the security and lock screen or enable them in applications. But they are all enabled, the apps themselves I haven’t touched, so they are enabled to make notifications as well.

One example, If i get a Snapchat from someone, when in lock screen, the screen turns on but it doesn’t show anything. If the phone is unlocked, it shows that I got a Snapchat but it does not show it in the notifications. This is just one example of my problem, there are many more different ones from different apps.

My Samsung messages work fine, but I currently use an app called Textra to replace it. The messages there show for a second and then disappears. I’m not quite sure how to explain it. I do not have any third party apps, except for Textra, that could be the reason because I just installed it yesterday.

Please help me figure this out. Some apps, like Facebook for example, work perfectly fine in the notification area. But other apps, such as Snapchat, won’t work. I have tried reinstalling the problematic apps but it didn’t work. Thanks for your time. — Jezzika

Solution: Hi Jezzika. Something must have been changed how the operating system handles notification for this to happen. This means that you either did it unknowingly, or that a glitch may have developed due to a variety of reasons. To check if a third party app or service is the reason for this issue, boot your phone in safe mode for several hours or a full day. This will give you more than enough time to observe your phone. To boot your Note 5 in safe mode, kindly do the following steps:

  • Turn off the phone completely.
  • Press and hold the Power key.
  • Once ‘Samsung Galaxy Note5’ shows, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
  • The phone will restart but keep the Vol Down button pressed.
  • Once the phone has finished restarting, ‘Safe mode’ will be display in the lower-left corner of the screen.
  • You may now release the Volume Down button.

Safe mode disables all third party apps and services. If the issue fails to occur while safe mode is enabled, you can bet one of your apps is to blame. You must isolate which app is the culprit by uninstall them one by one until the issue is eliminated.

If the same problem occurs while in safe mode though, don’t hesitate to do a factory reset. Here’s how to do it:

  • Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Note 5 completely.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home buttons first, and then press and hold the Power key.
  • Keep the three buttons pressed and when ‘Samsung Galaxy Note5’ shows, release the Power key but continue holding the other two.
  • Once the Android logo shows, release both the Volume Up and Home buttons.
  • The notice ‘Installing system update’ will show on the screen for 30 to 60 seconds before the Android system recovery screen is shown with its options.
  • Use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ and press the Power key to select it.
  • When the process is complete, use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
  • The reboot may take a little longer to complete but don’t worry and wait for the device to become active.

Problem #2: How to get files from Galaxy Note 5 with a non-working screen

LCD is gone and screen is cracked. I need to get data from it. I connected it to my computer but Kies says the phone is locked. I tried using findmymobile to unlock it remotely but it didn’t work. The phone still rings I just can’t see what’s going on. Is there a way for me to connect it to the TV or computer to be able to see the screen or control the screen?

I tried using a USB mouse on the phone but I can’t see the screen. I would hate to buy a LCD just to retrieve my data since I already have my replacement phone that ran me $175. Is there a cheaper LCD that is compatible with my phone so that I can  see the screen and backup the data on it? Please help. — Tasha

Solution: Hi Tasha. Unfortunate as it may seem but you really have not much choice in this situation. If the screen stops working due to hardware failure, there’s no way to access files from the device since you can’t enable the file transfer mode (MTP). The only resolution for you is to have the screen replaced.

Problem #3: AT&T Galaxy Note 5 deleted personal data after Android update

AT&T recently pushed through an update that completely deleted everything in my Samsung Galaxy Note 5 phone. This includes my  contact, my emails, my photos, my apps, and all personalized phone settings. I can re-download most apps. I am most concerned with my photos. There were some medical photos from my mom’s hospital stay that I desperately need. I there ANY way you recover them?  I have a SIM card, but no SD card. I thought I had Google backup on, but apparently not. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. — Sheila

Solution: Hi Sheila. If those files were saved locally, that is, they were stored only in the local storage device of your phone, there’s no way to recover them at this time. If you did not set your Note 5 before to automatically upload your photos to any cloud service, you are out of luck. Files, once deleted, are gone. Theoretically, a file remains in a portion of a storage device, even after a user has initiated a delete command, but only if that specific portion of the drive is not overwritten yet. If an Android update did delete your files, chances are some portions of the storage device where your files were previously located are already occupied by different files.  That means that even the most advanced recovery software will no longer be able to recover them.

There are many online services that offers recovery options. If you want, you can tap one of them to see if they can help. Use Google to search for reputable recovery services.

As a friendly reminder, make sure to always keep a backup of important documents to another device in case a situation like this occurs in the future.

Problem #4: Galaxy Note 5 won’t boot up

My phone has been going slow (possibly because of having a lot of notifications in the notification bar and not clearing them out; also not using task manager and stopping background apps/processes) and getting hot. Sometimes restarting and when it boots back up, it would forget/change more and more stuff. This was kind of an ongoing random problem for a few, several months or so. Going slow, getting hot, randomly restarting.

At first it would restart and everything would be fine or the same. Then the more times it would restart, the background picture would be changed, back to the original. Then it would forget my wi-fi settings, and then all my accounts were erased, like Yahoo, Google, Facebook and so on. And then it got hot for the most recent time and is stuck on the Samsung Galaxy Note boot logo.

I can’t remember what happened first. I don’t think what I’m about to describe has anything to do with it really though.  But at one point in time I recorded a 20 minute 2GB video. I know this because I was trying to move it to my computer before the phone wouldn’t boot back up.  And that left me with about 500 free GB of space on my phone and memory card so I thought maybe the memory was a bit low is why it was restarting, probably not.

Also one time, I don’t think my phone was hot at all, I don’t really remember though.  But I was downloading an Angry Birds Friends update, and during the download or the install, it just randomly restarted.  The phone booted back up and I went back to the Play Store and finished the download and install.  Played the game for a while, it was all good.  Then a few days went by before I played the game again.

but again it needed an update to the game, like the last update was forgot, maybe it was a coincidence that the game put out another update. I don’t know I thought that was weird but it updated just fine that time. Before it rebooted and got stuck at the logo, maybe a day or 2 before I had it hooked up to my computer and was trying to move files over, but it took for every for my computer to show the phone in the “My Computer” area.  I did click on the phone to use USB media transfer or whatever it is.  And when it finally showed my phone on the computer, I clicked on it, but it never displayed any of the contents of my phone and I gave up trying to transfer it via USB cable. Maybe my cable was damaged or maybe it was because the phone was about to mess up?

I originally tried transferring the video through Bluetooth, but that was taking forever, so I canceled that out.

So like I said before, the point I’m at now is stuck at the Samsung Galaxy Note boot logo. I’ve never done and custom ROMs or anything like that, just all stock.

Have you heard anything about the eMMC chip on the main board? I’ve done some reading about these phones and other Samsung phones that came out around the same time. The eMMC chip has some sort of problem, either by trying to download an update, custom rom or just getting hot. I’ve seen videos of people un-soldering the eMMC chip and soldering a new one on, but I know it has to be programmed with your carrier information before or after to work properly. And doing that, you lose all your data on the phone because that chip is where it is stored. I don’t want to go that route if I don’t need to.

I have also seen video of where they un-solder the eMMC chip and re-solder the same one back on. Basically just clean the old solder and glue off the chip and board and re-solder with some new fresh solder, maybe because it got hot or for some other reason the solder broke connection and re-soldering it again. Made good connection again and all was good.  Have you heard of this, could this be my phone’s problem?  I can’t get into safe mode or recovery, or even get into the screen that asks if you want to wipe the partition cache and those other options. — Jason

Solution: Hi Jason. The general rule in resolving issues you mention here is simple — if software troubleshooting won’t fix your issue, have the phone repaired or replaced. Unless you have advanced portable electronics knowledge as well as the required experience and skills to diagnose and repair a motherboard, we highly suggest that you stay away from tinkering with your phone’s hardware. Proper diagnosis is needed to fix a hardware problem but that doesn’t mean that the eMMC or flash memory in your phone is the root of all the troubles you mention. It’s possible that other components may be to blame. We can’t see the logic behind un-soldering and re-soldering of the flash memory to fix a problem unless the said chip has become loosely connected to the printed circuit board. Some technicians would try to do that if the device has been dropped or has seen water but it seldom leads to resolution of the problems you’re experiencing.

If the main problem you’re having is the phone’s inability to boot normally or in other modes (safe mode, recovery mode, Odin mode), we highly recommend that you ask for a replacement phone. If you are convinced though that you can manage to fix a hardware problem for this phone, please look for other online resources. Our blog does not provide hardware diagnostics and solutions.

Problem #5: Galaxy Note 5 keeps showing “network is unavailable. Please try again later.” error

I am facing a problem that a bubble is keeping to pop up on the screen saying the “network is unavailable. Please try again later.” This error keeps popping up even when I’m connected to Wi-Fi or even data.

It makes my phone’s WeChat always unable to access to the server. When making a voice call, I’ll be unable to use other function other than WeChat apps, if not the call will be disconnected. Besides, Facebook messenger is always showing offline mode even I’m connecting with Wi-Fi or data.

I’ll need to click into these apps in order to know whether I have received my messages sometimes.

May I know how to solve this problems? — Kary

Solution: Hi Kary. A firmware glitch may have developed causing some of your apps and other features to stop working properly. Because we don’t know the full history of your device as well as the changes that happened prior to noticing this problem, we suggest that you wipe the cache partition first.

Here’s how:

  • Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Note 5 completely.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home buttons first, and then press and hold the Power key.
  • Keep the three buttons pressed and when ‘Samsung Galaxy Note5’ shows, release the Power key but continue holding the other two.
  • Once the Android logo shows, release both the Volume Up and Home buttons.
  • The notice ‘Installing system update’ will show on the screen for 30 to 60 seconds before the Android system recovery screen is shown with its options.
  • Use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘wipe cache partition’ and press the Power key to select it.
  • When the process is complete, use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
  • The reboot may take a little longer to complete but don’t worry and wait for the device to become active.

Refreshing the system cache can sometimes work wonders. If the reason why mentioned apps are misbehaving is due to a bad system cache, wiping the cache partition may help. However, if nothing changes, do not hesitate to do a factory reset. Kindly refer to the steps above on how to do it.
