How To Fix Samsung Galaxy A6 Touchscreen Not Working After Software Update

Problem: After allowing my phone A6 to update to Oreo 8.1 the touch screen no longer works. Samsung wants to charge me to fix it saying some packet installed incorrectly. I find lots of people on forums with the same problem but all the help videos and guides are dodgy or poorly explained. I am no tech wiz so I need some assistance please. Where do I get the previous software version so I can revert back to when my phone was working? And then how do I go about reverting back? Forget warranty Samsung can keep it I just need my phone to work.

Solution: Since this issue occurred right after a software update then it’s possible that this is caused by a software glitch. There might still be old software data left in your device. This data which should have been removed during the update process is now causing a conflict with the new software version resulting in this problem. Listed below are the troubleshooting steps that you need to do for this particular issue.

Perform a soft reset

The first thing you will need to do is to do a soft reset. This is usually performed on a phone that is unresponsive as it will refresh its software.

  • Hold the Power button for 3-5 seconds.
  • Tap Power off.
  • When the device has shut down completely, wait approximately one minute. This will help make sure that the cache and temporary files are wiped from the device.
  • Press and hold the Power button to switch it back on.
  • Check if the issue still occurs.

Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode

The next thing to do if the issue still persists is to check if an app you downloaded is causing the problem.. This can be done by starting the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  • When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

If the touchscreen works in this mode then the problem could be caused by one of the apps you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

Your device will store cached data of apps in a dedicated partition in its internal storage. This data helps apps open faster making for a better mobile experience. There are however instances when this cached data can become corrupted and can cause issues with the device. To check if this is what’s causing the problem you should wipe the cache partition of the phone.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Perform a factory reset

The last troubleshooting step you will have to do if the above steps fails to fix the problem is a factory reset. This will revert the phone back to its original factory condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this step.

  • Make sure that the phone is off.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the above steps fails to fix the problem then you can try to flash an older firmware version to your phone. You can get the firmware file from the Sammobile website which is also where you can get the instructions on how to flash your phone.
