How to fix iPhone 13 Face ID not available or not working

If Face ID on your iPhone 13 is not available or not working, start with these fixes before considering hardware repair.

Method 1: Restart the iPhone

A simple restart can clear temporary Face ID service interruptions.

Hold the Side button and either Volume button until the power slider appears; slide to power off; wait 30 seconds; turn back on.

Method 2: Check for Obstructed TrueDepth Camera

The TrueDepth camera system (front-facing) must be unobstructed for Face ID.

  • Ensure the screen is clean and free of stickers, covers, or screen protectors that block the camera area (the small notch/ dynamic island).
  • Remove any accessories (cases, lens covers) that might cover the front sensors.
  • Wipe the front camera area with a microfiber cloth.

Method 3: Set Up Face ID Again

If Face ID was previously working but now fails, resetting and re-enrolling can help.

  1. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
  2. Tap Reset Face ID.
  3. Choose Set Up Face ID and follow the on-screen instructions to scan your face.
  4. Ensure you’re in a well-lit environment and hold the iPhone at eye level.

Method 4: Check for Updates

Apple sometimes releases updates that improve Face ID performance or fix bugs.

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available iOS updates.

Method 5: Reset All Settings

If Face ID still misbehaves, a settings reset can correct corrupted configuration without erasing data.

  1. Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.
  2. Enter your passcode; the iPhone will restart.
  3. After reboot, set up Face ID again.

Method 6: Check for Hardware Damage

The TrueDepth camera assembly is delicate. If the iPhone has been dropped or water-damaged, the Face ID components may be faulty.

  • Look for signs of damage to the front screen or notch area.
  • If the phone is under warranty or AppleCare+, contact Apple Support.

Face ID issues are often software-related; a reset or update usually resolves them. Persistent failure suggests hardware repair.
