How to fix Huawei P30 unresponsive touchscreen | screen keeps freezing

Are you having trouble with your Huawei P30 touchscreen becoming unresponsive? Learn how to deal with this problem by following the suggestions below.

P30 unresponsive touchscreen fix #1: Check screen for damage

A lot of times, touchscreen issues are results of bad or broken hardware. The most common reason is when a smartphone is accidentally dropped or hit by a hard object. If your Huawei P30 touchscreen started acting weird or became unresponsive after you dropped the device, or after you break the screen, you can assume that bad hardware is to blame.

It may not appear robust but your phone’s touchscreen is actually pretty durable. Phone makers know that the screen does not just functions as a display but as a gateway to the software in general. For a user, the only way to interact or manipulate apps and software is via the touchscreen. Phone manufacturers have to make sure that the screen is as strengthened as possible. But just like any fortified glass out there, the screen can still break and when it occurs, the only way to deal with it is replacement. So, if your device’s screen is clearly broken, or if it’s cracked, the only permanent way for you to fix the phone is repair or screen replacement. If the touchscreen became unresponsive following an accidental fall, there may be very limited things that you can do. Because no software tweak can fix a physically broken hardware, it’s probably a waste of time for you if you try to continue looking for software solutions. We suggest that you contact Huawei right away so you’ll know how to proceed with repair or screen replacement.

P30 unresponsive touchscreen fix #2: Clean the screen or don’t use screen protector

If your Huawei P30 was never dropped or damaged in any way, the next thing that you can do is to see if a screen protector is affecting the sensitivity of the digitizer. First, try cleaning the screen with clean, soft cloth. If that won’t fix the problem, just remove the screen protector entirely. Hopefully, that will bring the device to its working normal order and everything would be fine afterwards. This usually works if there’s reduced touchscreen sensitivity only. If nothing changes, continue with the troubleshooting steps below.

P30 unresponsive touchscreen fix #3: Install updates

Software and apps updates usually offer fix patch to obliterate existing problems inflicted by random bugs and malicious software. If you haven’t set your device and/or apps to auto-update, then you will need to manually install pending updates. Here’s how to manually check for software updates on the Huawei P30:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Select System Update.
  4. Tap the option to Check for Updates.

To check for any pending app updates you’ve downloaded through the Google Play Store app, launch Play Store then navigate to the Updates section. You will then see a list of apps with pending updates. Just tap on Update to install individual app updates or tap Update All to update apps simultaneously.

Don’t forget to reboot/soft reset your P30 after installing updates to ensure all new software changes are properly implemented and to prevent any app from going rogue.

P30 unresponsive touchscreen fix #4: Restart device

Should nothing work and your Huawei P30 P30 touchscreen is still unresponsive, the next step to do is to perform soft reset. This troubleshooting step is one of the basic device troubleshooting that can fix all sorts of troubles.

Soft reset is basically a simulation of the effects of pulling out the battery since you are unable to physically do that. Restarting a device can sometimes do wonders. Try to do a forced reboot by pressing and holding the Power key for 10 to 15 seconds. If your phone works, it should reboot and you should feel a vibration and see the Huawei logo. In case you do not feel the vibration and the screen is still blank, then simply press and hold the Power Key for more time until you see the device restart itself.

If nothing changes after attempting to reboot the device a few times, you can abandon this troubleshooting and proceed to the next ones below.

P30 unresponsive touchscreen fix #5: Refresh system cache

In some software-related cases, the cause is a corrupted system cache. Android uses a system cache in order to launch apps quickly. Sometimes, this cache may become corrupted or outdated after an update or app installation. This can lead to problems. To ensure that your Huawei P30 has good system cache, consider clearing the cache partition where it’s stored. This won’t delete personal data so you can do it safely. Follow the steps below on how to do it.

  1. With your phone turned off, press and hold both the Volume Up and Power buttons simultaneously for at least 10 seconds.
  2. Let go of the buttons when the Honor logo appears.
  3. Shortly after seeing the logo, the EMUI screen shows up with the recovery mode options.
  4. Press the Volume Down button to scroll to and highlight Wipe cache partition option.
  5. Then press the Power button to confirm selection.
  6. Use the Volume buttons to scroll to and highlight the next options and Power button to confirm selection.

P30 unresponsive touchscreen fix #6: Restart to Safe Mode

The other possible reason why your Huawei P30 touchscreen may have become unresponsive is a bad third party app. To check if that’s the case, consider restarting the device to safe mode. In safe mode, no third party app should be able to run. So, if the touchscreen works normally on safe mode, you can bet a bad third party app is to blame. Here’s how to boot it to safe mode:

  1. Power off the device.
  2. Power it back on.
  3. Once you see the Huawei animation on the screen press and hold Volume Down button.
  4. You can see safe mode at the bottom left corner once the device finishes booting.
  5. Now that the device has started on safe mode, charge it and see if there’s a difference.

Don’t forget: safe mode blocks third party apps but it won’t tell you which of them is the real cause. If you think that there’s a rogue third party app in the system, you must identify it. Here’s what you need to do exactly:

  1. Boot to safe mode.
  2. Check for the problem.
  3. Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
  4. After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
  5. If your Huawei P30 touchscreen is still problematic, repeat steps 1-4.

P30 unresponsive touchscreen fix #7: Factory reset

If none of the solutions above work, consider erasing your device with factory reset. This will delete all personal data so be sure to back your files up ahead of time. Wiping the device is an often effective way to fix problems caused by an app or software bug. If the reason for your problem is software-related, doing a factory reset may likely fix it.

There are two methods to perform a factory reset on your Huawei P30. You want to do the first one first if there’s no problem going under Settings menu.

Method 1: Hard reset on Huawei P30 via Settings

Wiping your phone with factory reset will automatically erase information from your device’s internal storage. The software environment on your device is basically returned to its original form, just like when it left the factory. This means that everything you added to the device like files, photos, videos, and apps will all be deleted. If you don’t want to lose irreplaceable data, make sure to create a backup ahead of time.

There can be many different reasons why a user may want to factory reset a device. If your situation calls for a Hard reset on Huawei P30  and you are able to access your device’s settings menu, then this first method is for you. It’s easier to do compared to the second one below so this is a go-to method for you.

To perform a Hard reset on Huawei P30 via Settings:

  1. Create a backup of your personal data.
  2. Turn on the device.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap System.
  5. Choose Reset.
  6. Tap Reset all settings.
  7. Tap Reset all settings.
  8. Confirm the action by tapping on Reset all settings.
  9. Wait for factory reset to finish.

Method 2: Hard reset on Huawei P30 via Recovery Mode

This method is useful in one particular situation: when Settings menu is not accessible. There may be a variety of reasons why Settings menu may become unreachable. In some cases, the device may have simply frozen or unresponsive. At other times, it can be due to a problem that you are currently trying to troubleshoot. In any case, you must do Hard reset on Huawei P30 via Recovery Mode when the situation forces you to. We still recommend that you use the first method as your primary option for convenience reasons. Effects-wise, the two methods don’t have any difference at all. The device will be completely sanitized and all user data deleted after doing any of them.

To perform a Hard reset on Huawei P30 via Recovery Mode:

  1. Create a backup of your personal data.
  2. Turn off the mobile by pressing the Power key for a few moments.
  3. Press and hold Volume Up and Power buttons for a couple of seconds.
  4. When Recovery Mode appears let go of all keys.
  5. Now choose “wipe data/factory reset”. Use Volume buttons to navigate and the Power key to accept it.
  6. Confirm the operation by typing in “yes” and select “wipe data/factory reset”.
  7. When you see the Google Verification info confirm the operation by selecting “wipe data/factory reset”.
  8. Finally choose “reboot system now” by using the Power key.

P30 unresponsive touchscreen fix #8: Repair

As an end user, there’s only so much that you can do in fixing this problem. If the touchscreen is still not responsive or still keeps freezing, you must visit your local Huawei dealer or store so you can have the device repaired or replaced.
