How to fix Huawei P30 GPS not working | GPS location issues

If the GPS function on your Huawei P30 is not working, there are a number of things that you can try to fix it. Before you start doing some device troubleshooting though, we suggest that you consider removing the case or cover from your phone. This is important, especially if you’re using a metallic case. Sometimes, GPS radios may encounter signal interference issues with such types of cases. If you’re not using any case on your device, then go ahead and follow our suggestions below.

P30 GPS not working fix #1:  Turn on GPS

If your Huawei P30 GPS location appears to be not working, the first thing that you want to do is to ensure that GPS function is enabled. Some users may turn GPS off to conserve battery power so be sure to activate GPS. Here’s how:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Security & Privacy.
  3. Tap Location access.
  4. Tap the switch next to “Access my location” to enable GPS function.

P30 GPS not working fix #2: Enable Location Accuracy

Even if GPS function is enabled, it’s not a guarantee that apps using GPS data may get accurate information. That’s because your device may be receiving inaccurate GPS data. This can lead to problems, especially for apps that require accurate GPS tracking such as navigation apps. If some apps are not working properly due to this issue, there’s something that you can do about. To get the best GPS data, you can improve Location Accuracy of the device. These are the steps to do that:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Security & Privacy.
  3. Tap Location access.
  4. Activate “Access my location” function;
  5. Tap “Google Location Accuracy”.
  6. Tap the switch next to Improve “Location Accuracy” to enable the function.

P30 GPS not working fix #3: Restart device

Should nothing work and your Huawei P30 GPS is still not working, the next step to do is to perform soft reset. This troubleshooting step is one of the basic device troubleshooting that can fix all sorts of troubles.

Soft reset is basically a simulation of the effects of pulling out the battery since you are unable to physically do that. Restarting a device can sometimes do wonders. Try to do a forced reboot by pressing and holding the Power key for 10 to 15 seconds. If your phone works, it should reboot and you should feel a vibration and see the Huawei logo. In case you do not feel the vibration and the screen is still blank, then simply press and hold the Power Key for more time until you see the device restart itself.

If nothing changes after attempting to reboot the device a few times, you can abandon this troubleshooting and proceed to the next ones below.

P30 GPS not working fix #4: Reset network settings

GPS issues may sometimes be caused by incorrect network settings. In order for your device to use whatever GPS data it is receiving, its network configuration must be set up correctly. At times, system-wide changes may affect the network functionality of a device. This can result to some problems including possible issues with GPS function. To ensure that your Huawei device has the correct settings, follow the steps below to reset network configuration:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to Advanced settings.
  3. Scroll to and tap Backup & reset.
  4. Select Network Settings Reset from the given options.
  5. If prompted, read the warning message and then tap Network Settings Reset twice to confirm.

Allow your device to finish resetting network settings and restore the default values. When it’s done resetting network settings, reboot your phone then reconnect to your Wi-Fi network.

P30 GPS not working fix #5: Install app and OS update

Software and apps updates usually offer fix patch to obliterate existing problems inflicted by random bugs and malicious software. If you haven’t set your device and/or apps to auto-update, then you will need to manually install pending updates. Here’s how to manually check for software updates on the P30:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Select System Update.
  4. Tap the option to Check for Updates.

To check for any pending app updates you’ve downloaded through the Google Play Store app, launch Play Store then navigate to the Updates section. You will then see a list of apps with pending updates. Just tap on Update to install individual app updates or tap Update All to update apps simultaneously.

Don’t forget to reboot/soft reset your P30 after installing updates to ensure all new software changes are properly implemented and to prevent any app from going rogue.

P30 GPS not working fix #6: Check on Safe Mode

Sometimes, a third party app may cause problems or interfere with the Operating System. Having network troubles due to a bad app is not unheard of in Huawei devices. Restart the phone to safe mode and see if that’s the case. In safe mode, no third party app should be able to run. So, if GPS works normally on safe mode, you can bet a bad third party app is to blame. Here’s how to boot it to safe mode:

  1. Power off the device.
  2. Power it back on.
  3. Once you see the Huawei animation on the screen press and hold Volume Down button.
  4. You can see safe mode at the bottom left corner once the device finishes booting.
  5. Now that the device has started on safe mode, charge it and see if there’s a difference.

Don’t forget: safe mode blocks third party apps but it won’t tell you which of them is the real cause. If you think that there’s a rogue third party app in the system, you must identify it. Here’s what you need to do exactly:

  1. Boot to safe mode.
  2. Check for the problem.
  3. Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
  4. After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
  5. If your Huawei P30 GPS is still problematic, repeat steps 1-4.

P30 GPS not working fix #7: Turn off Power Saving Mode

Your Huawei P30 device can conserve battery power using its Power Saving Mode. In this mode, some functions and features are disabled including GPS. If your Huawei device is in Power Saving Mode, GPS can’t work so apps that require accurate GPS readings will not work properly as well. If you badly need to use GPS at this time, make sure that you turn off Power Saving Mode. You can temporarily do that with these steps:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Under Optimize Battery Usage menu, tap the switch next to Power Saving Mode to turn it off.

P30 GPS not working fix #8: Clear cache partition

In order to load apps quickly, Android stores frequently used items like website links, images, videos, ads, among others in a part in internal storage called cache partition. Sometimes, these items collectively called system cache may get outdated or corrupted causing performance problems or bugs. To ensure that you phone runs efficiently and the cache in top shape, you want to regularly clear the cache partition (about once every few months). When dealing with any app issue, this can also be one of the troubleshooting steps. Here’s how to do it:

  1. With your phone turned off, press and hold both the Volume Up and Power buttons simultaneously for at least 10 seconds.
  2. Let go of the buttons when the Honor logo appears.
  3. Shortly after seeing the logo, the EMUI screen shows up with the recovery mode options.
  4. Press the Volume Down button to scroll to and highlight Wipe cache partition option.
  5. Then press the Power button to confirm selection.
  6. Use the Volume buttons to scroll to and highlight the next options and Power button to confirm selection.

P30 GPS not working fix #9: Factory Reset

If your Huawei P30 GPS is still not working at this stage, the final step that you can do is to return the device’s software to its defaults. Wiping the device is an often effective way to fix problems caused by an app or software bug. If the reason for your GPS location issues is software-related, doing a factory reset may likely fix it.

There are two methods to perform a factory reset on your Huawei P30. You want to do the first one first if there’s no problem going under Settings menu.

Method 1: Hard reset on Huawei P30 via Settings

Wiping your phone with factory reset will automatically erase information from your device’s internal storage. The software environment on your device is basically returned to its original form, just like when it left the factory. This means that everything you added to the device like files, photos, videos, and apps will all be deleted. If you don’t want to lose irreplaceable data, make sure to create a backup ahead of time.

There can be many different reasons why a user may want to factory reset a device. If your situation calls for a Hard reset on Huawei P30  and you are able to access your device’s settings menu, then this first method is for you. It’s easier to do compared to the second one below so this is a go-to method for you.

To perform a Hard reset on Huawei P30 via Settings:

  1. Create a backup of your personal data.
  2. Turn on the device.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap System.
  5. Choose Reset.
  6. Tap Reset all settings.
  7. Tap Reset all settings.
  8. Confirm the action by tapping on Reset all settings.
  9. Wait for factory reset to finish.

Method 2: Hard reset on Huawei P30 via Recovery Mode

This method is useful in one particular situation: when Settings menu is not accessible. There may be a variety of reasons why Settings menu may become unreachable. In some cases, the device may have simply frozen or unresponsive. At other times, it can be due to a problem that you are currently trying to troubleshoot. In any case, you must do Hard reset on Huawei P30 via Recovery Mode when the situation forces you to. We still recommend that you use the first method as your primary option for convenience reasons. Effects-wise, the two methods don’t have any difference at all. The device will be completely sanitized and all user data deleted after doing any of them.

To perform a Hard reset on Huawei P30 via Recovery Mode:

  1. Create a backup of your personal data.
  2. Turn off the mobile by pressing the Power key for a few moments.
  3. Press and hold Volume Up and Power buttons for a couple of seconds.
  4. When Recovery Mode appears let go of all keys.
  5. Now choose “wipe data/factory reset”. Use Volume buttons to navigate and the Power key to accept it.
  6. Confirm the operation by typing in “yes” and select “wipe data/factory reset”.
  7. When you see the Google Verification info confirm the operation by selecting “wipe data/factory reset”.
  8. Finally choose “reboot system now” by using the Power key.

P30 GPS not working fix #10: Get help from Huawei

In some rare cases, GPS location issues may be coming from a bad or malfunctioning radios. If factory reset won’t resolve your issue at all, contact Huawei so you can have them examine the phone for you.
