How to fix Huawei P30 broken microphone | microphone not working

If the microphone on your Huawei P30 is broken or not working, you must check all the factors that can cause it. This short troubleshooting guide will help you narrow down the possible reasons for it.

Huawei P30 broken microphone fix #1: Check for dirt or debris in the microphone area

There are two microphones on your Huawei P30. One is located at the top where the earpiece is and the other is at the bottom, near the speaker. If you think that the microphone is broken on your Huawei P30, the first thing that you want to do is to ensure that the microphone holes are not clogged by dirt or debris. If they are, the microphone inside may not be able to pick your voice up properly.

Also, if your phone was recently exposed to moisture or water, make sure that you wipe it dry, especially in the microphone area. Just like dirt or debris, water in the microphone hole can cause problems. Don’t worry, your Huawei P30 is water resistant so even if there’s presence of water, what you need to do is wipe the phone and allow water to evaporate naturally for a few hours.

Huawei P30 broken microphone fix #2: Check for errors

Are you having an error code or message when using the microphone during calls, or when an app needs microphone functionality? If you are, be sure to take note of that error so you can do a quick Google search about it. If you’re lucky and the error is known, you may be able to find an online solution for it.

Huawei P30 broken microphone fix #3: Restart the device

Restarting a device can sometimes be an effective solution for problems caused by minor bugs. At this point, the next best thing that you can do is to refresh the system. Restarting a device can sometimes do wonders. Make sure that you forced restart your phone if none of the suggestions has worked so far. Try to do a forced reboot by pressing and holding the Power key for 10 to 15 seconds. If your phone works, it should reboot and you should feel a vibration and see the Huawei logo. In case you do not feel the vibration and the screen is still blank, then simply press and hold the Power Key for more time until you see the device restart itself.

If nothing changes after attempting to reboot the device a few times, you can abandon this troubleshooting and proceed to the next ones below.

Huawei P30 broken microphone fix #4: Deal with the app having a problem

If the microphone problem only happens when trying to use a certain application, that can mean that it’s an app issue. There are three things that you can do about that. One is to force restart the app, the second is to clear its cache, and third is to reset or reinstall.

In order to restart the app:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Navigate to Application Manager.
  3. Tap the All tab.
  4. Select your appropriate app.
  5. Then tap Force Stop.

To clear an app cache:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Navigate to Application Manager.
  3. Tap the All tab.
  4. Select the appropriate app.
  5. Tap Clear Cache.
  6. Check for the problem.

To reset or clear an app’s data:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Navigate to Application Manager.
  3. Tap the All tab.
  4. Select your appropriate app.
  5. Tap Clear Data.
  6. Check for the problem.

Huawei P30 broken microphone fix #5: Refresh system cache

If the microphone is still broken on your Huawei P30 at this point, the next step for you is to ensure that the system cache is refreshed. In order to load apps quickly, Android stores frequently used items like website links, images, videos, ads, among others in a part in internal storage called cache partition. Sometimes, these items collectively called system cache may get outdated or corrupted causing performance problems or bugs. To ensure that you phone runs efficiently and the cache in top shape, you want to regularly clear the cache partition (about once every few months). When dealing with any app issue, this can also be one of the troubleshooting steps. Here’s how to do it:

  1. With your phone turned off, press and hold both the Volume Up and Power buttons simultaneously for at least 10 seconds.
  2. Let go of the buttons when the Honor logo appears.
  3. Shortly after seeing the logo, the EMUI screen shows up with the recovery mode options.
  4. Press the Volume Down button to scroll to and highlight Wipe cache partition option.
  5. Then press the Power button to confirm selection.
  6. Use the Volume buttons to scroll to and highlight the next options and Power button to confirm selection.

Huawei P30 broken microphone fix #6: Install updates

There are issues that may require updates to fix them. If your Huawei P30 microphone is still broken, make sure that you install whatever available software update there is at the moment. If there’s no any available update at all, then simply ignore this suggestion.. Here’s how to manually check for software updates on the P30:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Select System Update.
  4. Tap the option to Check for Updates.

To check for any pending app updates you’ve downloaded through the Google Play Store app, launch Play Store then navigate to the Updates section. You will then see a list of apps with pending updates. Just tap on Update to install individual app updates or tap Update All to update apps simultaneously.

Don’t forget to reboot/soft reset your P30 after installing updates to ensure all new software changes are properly implemented and to prevent any app from going rogue.

Huawei P30 broken microphone fix #7: Check for bad apps

Sometimes, a third party app may cause problems or interfere with the Operating System. Having network troubles due to a bad app is not unheard of in Huawei devices. Restart the phone to safe mode and see if that’s the case. In safe mode, no third party app should be able to run. So, if microphone works normally on safe mode, you can bet a bad third party app is to blame. Here’s how to boot it to safe mode:

  1. Power off the device.
  2. Power it back on.
  3. Once you see the Huawei animation on the screen press and hold Volume Down button.
  4. You can see safe mode at the bottom left corner once the device finishes booting.
  5. Now that the device has started on safe mode, charge it and see if there’s a difference.

Don’t forget: safe mode blocks third party apps but it won’t tell you which of them is the real cause. If you think that there’s a rogue third party app in the system, you must identify it. Here’s what you need to do exactly:

  1. Boot to safe mode.
  2. Check for the problem.
  3. Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
  4. After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
  5. If your Huawei P30 is still problematic, repeat steps 1-4.

Huawei P30 broken microphone fix #8: Factory reset

The last resort that you can do if none of the above solutions work is factory reset. This is usually effective in fixing problems caused by a software or app bug or glitch. Be sure to create a backup of your personal data first before you factory wipe your Huawei P30.

There are two methods to perform a factory reset on your Huawei P30. You want to do the first one first if there’s no problem going under Settings menu.

Method 1: Hard reset on Huawei P30 via Settings

Wiping your phone with factory reset will automatically erase information from your device’s internal storage. The software environment on your device is basically returned to its original form, just like when it left the factory. This means that everything you added to the device like files, photos, videos, and apps will all be deleted. If you don’t want to lose irreplaceable data, make sure to create a backup ahead of time.

There can be many different reasons why a user may want to factory reset a device. If your situation calls for a Hard reset on Huawei P30  and you are able to access your device’s settings menu, then this first method is for you. It’s easier to do compared to the second one below so this is a go-to method for you.

To perform a Hard reset on Huawei P30 via Settings:

  1. Create a backup of your personal data.
  2. Turn on the device.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap System.
  5. Choose Reset.
  6. Tap Reset all settings.
  7. Tap Reset all settings.
  8. Confirm the action by tapping on Reset all settings.
  9. Wait for factory reset to finish.

Method 2: Hard reset on Huawei P30 via Recovery Mode

This method is useful in one particular situation: when Settings menu is not accessible. There may be a variety of reasons why Settings menu may become unreachable. In some cases, the device may have simply frozen or unresponsive. At other times, it can be due to a problem that you are currently trying to troubleshoot. In any case, you must do Hard reset on Huawei P30 via Recovery Mode when the situation forces you to. We still recommend that you use the first method as your primary option for convenience reasons. Effects-wise, the two methods don’t have any difference at all. The device will be completely sanitized and all user data deleted after doing any of them.

To perform a Hard reset on Huawei P30 via Recovery Mode:

  1. Create a backup of your personal data.
  2. Turn off the mobile by pressing the Power key for a few moments.
  3. Press and hold Volume Up and Power buttons for a couple of seconds.
  4. When Recovery Mode appears let go of all keys.
  5. Now choose “wipe data/factory reset”. Use Volume buttons to navigate and the Power key to accept it.
  6. Confirm the operation by typing in “yes” and select “wipe data/factory reset”.
  7. When you see the Google Verification info confirm the operation by selecting “wipe data/factory reset”.
  8. Finally choose “reboot system now” by using the Power key.

Huawei P30 broken microphone fix #9: Repair
