How To Fix Google Pixel 3 XL Not Connecting To Bluetooth Device

Problem: I have the Bose Soundsport earbuds as well as the Bose QC 35 ii over ear headphones paired with my device. Note I’ve had both headphones paired on my Pixel 2 XL as well before recently upgrading to the Pixel 3 XL, and the same problem existed then. When attempting to connect to either headphones I often experience a delay that can last for minutes. On screen, my phone will show that it’s attempting to connect to the appropriate headphones that I’m using. In the headphones, I can hear that they are ‘Connecting to Pixel 3 XL’ repeatedly. I usually have better success when I turn the Bluetooth on my phone on before the headphones, but it’s far from perfect. Many times I’ll have to toggle Bluetooth off and on for both devices before they finally connect to each other. Any ideas?

Solution: Before troubleshooting the phone it’s always a good idea to make sure that the device is running on the latest software version. If an update is available make sure to download and install it first.

Listed below are the troubleshooting steps that you need to perform to fix this problem. This does not only apply to the Pixel 3 XL but other Android devices as well.

Reboot the Pixel 3 XL and the Bluetooth device

This is the first step that you need to perform as it will refresh the phone software. It will also initiate the phone for a new Bluetooth connection.

  • Press and hold the Power button on the right side.
  • Tap the option to Power off.
  • Wait for about 30 seconds, then press the Power button again until the animation screen appears.

For the Bluetooth device follow its instruction manual on how to perform a reboot.

Turn on the Bluetooth connection of the Pixel 3 XL

  • From a Home screen, touch and swipe up to display all apps.
  • Go to Settings – Connected devices – Connection Preferences – Bluetooth
  • Turn on the Bluetooth switch

Forget the Bluetooth connections from the Pixel 3XL

  • Tap to open the Settings app on your Google phone.
  • Tap Connected devices.
  • Tap Bluetooth.
  • Tap Settings on the Bluetooth devices  then select the option to Forget.

Pair the Pixel 3 XL with the Bluetooth device

Before you can connect to the Bluetooth headset you will need to pair it to your phone first.

  • Open the Settings app by tapping on the Settings icon on your Home screen.
  • Tap Connected Devices.
  • Tap Bluetooth then confirm if Bluetooth is turned on.
  • Tap the option to Pair new device. Or tap More then select Refresh.
  • Tap the name of the Bluetooth device you want to pair with your phone.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the pairing process.

In case the issue persists then proceed with the additional troubleshooting steps listed below.

Start the Pixel 3 XL in Safe Mode

Try to check if an app you downloaded is causing the problem by starting the phone in Safe Mode. When the phone is started in this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run making it easier to check if a third party app is causing the problem.

  • With the phone powered on, press and hold the Power button (located on the right-edge) until the Power off prompt appears then release.
  • Touch and hold Power off until the Reboot to safe mode prompt appears then release.
  • Tap OK to confirm.

In case the issue does not occur in this mode then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Perform a factory reset on the Pixel 3 XL

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. This reverts the phone back to its original factory condition.  Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset.

  • Go to the phone Settings.
  • Tap System > Advanced > Reset options.
  • Tap Erase all data (factory reset) > Reset phone. If needed, enter your PIN, pattern, or password.
  • To erase all data from your phone’s internal storage, tap Erase everything.
  • When your phone has finished erasing, pick the option to restart.

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then you should consider having this issue checked at a service center.
