How To Fix Google Pixel 3 XL Call Cannot Be Heard Over Bluetooth Connection

Problem: We have a Google Pixel 3 XL.  We were able to sync it with our Tesla however whenever we make our first call getting into the vehicle we cannot hear anything from the caller.  They can hear us, but we cannot hear them. If I hang up and call for the 2nd time we can hear the caller. This happens every time we make that 1st call getting into the vehicle.  We have tried syncing the phone to the Tesla 2 separate times.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this phone it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version first. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

As this appears to be a software related problem we will be eliminating any software glitch that could be causing this issue. Follow the troubleshooting steps listed below to fix the problem.

Restart the phone and car Bluetooth system

The first thing that you need to do in this case is a soft reset. This is usually performed when the phone becomes unresponsive but can also be done for this issue as this step will refresh the phone software .To do this just press and hold the Power button for about 10 to 20 seconds or until it power cycles. You should also do the same for your car Bluetooth. Check if the issue still occurs.

Forget the Bluetooth connections from the Pixel 3 XL

  • Tap to open the Settings app on your Google phone.
  • Tap Connected devices.
  • Tap Bluetooth.
  • Tap Settings on the Bluetooth devices  then select the option to Forget.

You should also forget the Bluetooth connection from your car. Refer to the car manual on how to perform this step.

Pair the Pixel 3 XL with the car Bluetooth

Before you can connect to the Bluetooth headset you will need to pair it to your phone first.

  • Open the Settings app by tapping on the Settings icon on your Home screen.
  • Tap Connected Devices.
  • Tap Bluetooth then confirm if Bluetooth is turned on.
  • Tap the option to Pair new device. Or tap More then select Refresh.
  • Tap the name of the Bluetooth device you want to pair with your phone.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the pairing process.

In case the issue persists then proceed with the additional troubleshooting steps listed below.

Start the Pixel 3 XL in Safe Mode

Try to check if an app you downloaded is causing the problem by starting the phone in Safe Mode. When the phone is started in this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run making it easier to check if a third party app is causing the problem.

  • With the phone powered on, press and hold the Power button (located on the right-edge) until the Power off prompt appears then release.
  • Touch and hold Power off until the Reboot to safe mode prompt appears then release.
  • Tap OK to confirm.

In case the issue does not occur in this mode then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Perform a factory reset on the Pixel 3 XL

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. This reverts the phone back to its original factory condition.  Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset.

  • Go to the phone Settings.
  • Tap System > Advanced > Reset options.
  • Tap Erase all data (factory reset) > Reset phone. If needed, enter your PIN, pattern, or password.
  • To erase all data from your phone’s internal storage, tap Erase everything.
  • When your phone has finished erasing, pick the option to restart.

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then you should consider having this issue checked at a service center.
