How to fix Galaxy Note8 showing moisture detected error even when dry

There are many #GalaxyNote8 owners who are wondering what to do when their device keeps showing the “Moisture detected” warning. Normally, this means that the charging port is wet or has presence of moisture or residue. In order to prevent damaging the device during charging, the charging port must be dry and not host debris that may contain moisture. At other times though, the moisture detected warning may persist long after the phone has been dried, just like what one of the cases shows below. If you are one of the unlucky ones to experience moisture detected error, make sure to follow our suggestions below.

Problem #1: What to do if Galaxy Note8 keeps showing moisture detected error even when dry

I brought my phone into the shower last week and set it on a shelf (mostly out of the spray zone) so that I could listen to some shower tunes. I did this knowing these phones are water resistant and you could actually take them under water for short periods of time. I figured having it in the shower but not actually submerging it would probably be ” just fine” so once I got out of the shower, I saw that the port said that it had moisture in it. I dried it up and made sure that it was clear and clean. I blew it out thinking everything would be just fine. That evening I was able to charge the phone as as usual. the next day I got the warning that there was moisture in the port again even though I had not gotten it wet again. I checked and made sure it was dry, I even used a blow-dryer for a minute to blow some warm dry air over it to be sure. Now here I am a week later, I have been charging my phone and using my phone but suddenly it says moisture is detected in the charge port again. that’s weird, I haven’t had it anywhere near moisture. Do you have any suggestions to fix my phone?

Solution: If moisture detected error only shows at random times, that’s probably because there’s residue in the charging port that was not removed. You’re right, occasional splashes should be alright and won’t damage your Note8 at all. You only want to avoid exposing the device to high pressure water like sea waves, or when you’re swimming in a pool. Also, you don’t want the phone to get wet in other forms of liquid other than fresh water. Distilled water, sea water, water with soap, or any other liquid may leave residue in the charging port can trigger the moisture detected warning. Keep in mind that there’s no perfect system and it’s possible that your Note8 is normally working. There may only be something that triggered the system to show the moisture detected warning, even when the phone is totally dry. The trigger can be a software bug or something in the charging port. If you’re 100% positive that you’ve dried the charging port thoroughly already, consider doing a factory reset to see if there’s a temporary software bug that triggers the warning.

For reference, these are the steps on how to factory reset your Note8:

  1. Create a backup of your data.
  2. Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Remember, factory reset will only restore all software information back to their defaults. It won’t do anything if the real cause of the problem is hardware-related. If nothing change and the issue remains after a factory wipe, contact Samsung so they can check the hardware.

Problem #2: Galaxy Note8 showing black screen when opening apps like Snapchat

Hi. My Note8 recently started to overheat while operating apps like Snapchat, and would just go to a black screen. It would try to reboot several times, but would freeze either at the lock screen or at the AT&T logo. Now it won’t even turn on. It would flash the blue light from time to time but would not reboot. I’ve tried charging it, but there was no response from the screen. I’ve tried doing the soft reboot by holding down the volume down key and the power button, as well as the volume up button, Bixby button, and power button, but to no avail. I also tried getting the battery replaced, but it wouldn’t turn on despite having a new battery. Is there anything else I can try to do to save my phone?

Solution: If you haven’t tried wiping the phone by doing a factory reset, we recommend that you do that first. This will ensure all software information are back to their known working defaults. If you’ve already tried that before you contacted us, or if the issue is not fixed after you do it, you can assume bad hardware is to blame. That battery replacement did not do anything tells us that there’s probably other hardware malfunction that prevents the phone from booting up.  Make sure that you let Samsung or a qualified independent technician check the hardware for you.

Problem #3: Galaxy Note8 won’t charge when using non-Samsung adapter after repair

Hi Droid guy. I’m having a serious problem with my Galaxy Note8.  The problem occurred when i did screen replacement at an authorised Samsung repairer. the phone refuses to hold charge on the battery and will only switch on when plugged into an adaptive fast charger (no other charger works). What will happen is the battery wont charge when its plugged in. it’ll either read 36% or 72% battery no matter how long the device is left to charge.. in most cases if i leave it on charge for to long the phone will display a Exclamation mark saying the battery is not charging and the device gets really hot. if i boot the phone it will boot into the home screen and immediately reset and continue in a boot loop until i disconnect the charger in which case the phone will instantly die, in other word the phone wont charge the battery or hold charge when plugged in or charge up the battery.

i have taken it in where i got it repaired and they said the diagnostic on the phones comes back with no faults and they can’t assist me?  I’m not sure how to resolve the issue as I’ve tried to root the device and wipe it and the problem still occurs. at this point I’m ready to throw it away so any help would be highly appreciated.

Solution: At this point, the practical thing that you can do is to refrain from using a non-offiacial charging cable and/or adapter. If a Samsung authorized technician can’t figure out the issue after physically examining the phone, neither can we. We don’t know the full history of the device nor do we have first-hand knowledge about the situation of the hardware. It’s possible that the technician may have failed to check other aspects of the logic board or do a thorough diagnostics. We suggest that you let a another technician examine the phone for a second opinion. There may be an issue with the charging port and the first technician may simply be indifferent to it or refused to replace it. The symptoms you mention appears to be consistent with bad charging port issue so it’s definitely worth checking.
