S10 5G won’t turn on fix #1: Know the possible causes | check for hardware damage

As the owner, you must already have an idea what the possible reason why your S10 5G won’t turn on. If you dropped the device or hit it with something hard before noticing the problem, it’s likely that the cause is bad hardware. This troubleshooting guide is limited to giving you options if the possible reason for the problem is software-related. If your phone has sustained hardware damage and there’s obvious indications of that, it may be necessary to send the phone in for repair or replacement. Samsung Galaxy devices have generally reliable hardware so unless the phone has been severely damaged, they should continue to work, or least show signs that they’re turning on. We suggest that you skip the rest of the suggested troubleshooting steps below if your S10 5G is totally unresponsive or won’t power on at all.

S10 5G won’t turn on fix #2: Perform soft reset

In some cases, Samsung Galaxy devices that appear to power on are actually just frozen or unresponsive but otherwise okay. If the phone is not physically damaged, it may be frozen. This can sometimes happen if a system encounters a bug that it can’t resolve itself. To see if that’s the case, try to press and hold the Power button. From there, tap the Restart option to reboot. Or, you can press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons for about 10 seconds. Once the phone has restarted, release the buttons. This is usually effective in clearing bugs that developed when a system is left running for some time. We suggest that you restart your S10 using this method at least once a week to lessen the chances of bugs.

  1. Press and hold the Power + Volume Down buttons for approximately 10 seconds or until the device power cycles. Allow several seconds for the Maintenance Boot Mode screen to appear.
  2. From the Maintenance Boot Mode screen, select Normal Boot. You can use the volume buttons to cycle through the available options and the lower left button (below the volume buttons) to select. Wait for up to 90 seconds for the reset to complete.

In the event that restart won’t work, you can also try to allow the battery to drain first. This is only applicable if your S10 5G shows signs that it’s not totally dead at all. Hopefully, the system reverts to its normal function after it restarts. This can take time if the battery has high charge left at this time. Another common reason why a Galaxy device fails to turn on is the lack of power and that’s because there’s something in the charging that prevents it to charge. Try to check the charging port using a magnifying tool if possible. If you see that there’s dirt, lint, or foreign object inside, that’s probably the reason why the battery has died. Use a canned of compressed air to blow away dirt or lint. Avoid sticking anything inside in order not to damage the system.

If your Galaxy S10 still 5G won’t turn on, the next thing that you should try is to restart it to safe mode. If the problem is caused by a bad app you’ve installed, safe mode may allow your S10 to boot up normally. You can then uninstall apps to fix the problem.

To restart your S10 to safe mode:

  1. Turn off your S10. If you can’t turn it off normally, let the phone drain its battery until it turns itself off.
  2. With your S10 off, press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
  3. When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.

  1. Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up button and the Bixby button at the same time.
  3. While still holding the Volume Up and Bixby keys, press and hold the Power button.
  4. The Recovery screen menu will now appear. When you see this, release the buttons.

If your phone boots to Recovery Mode successfully, make sure to try wipe cache partition first. If that won’t work, then you can factory reset the phone by selecting Wipe data/factory reset.

To boot your phone to Download Mode:

  1. Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Down key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. You’ll know if you’re on Download Mode when you see a screen that says “Downloading….”
  4. Remember, if the screen works in any of these modes, that’s a clear sign that you have an Android OS issue. Be sure to factory reset the device in Recovery Mode to fix it.

Even if your phone can successfully boot to Download Mode, there may be nothing that you can do at this point. However, this also means that the device may have simply encountered a software problem but otherwise the hardware is fine. In this case, consider visiting your local Samsung store for help.
