Problem: I have the new samsung Galaxy A50 got it on monday this week but then it fell, i already have anticrack on my phone and also a screen protector when i5 fell, the screen protector only suffer a bit of crack on the end and when I remove it, there are cracks not on the phone screen but inside the screen and my phone won’t turn on at all. I tried all the booting and button pressing process like holding both volume button down and also the power button but it would only vibrates and won’t turn on, I tried charging it but it won’t show that it’s charged but when I charge it on my power bank, the battery in my powerbank lessens. Is the problem the defect of my new phone since it’s a normal fall and it directly goes like this ? Is it still fixable? I can’t contact samsung now since I’m currently overseas and my warranty covers only in my home country. What should I do now?

If you find your Galaxy A50 not turning on after dropping it, hardware damage must be to blame. This means that you’ll most likely have to send it in for repair. In some rare cases, there may be some temporary software solutions that you can try if you don’t want to have it repaired right away. Learn what you can do below.

Vibrates but won’t turn on fix #1: Survey the damage

Screen protectors and third party sturdy cases may protect your phone from scratches but not from damage that can come from shocks during a drop. The screen may be cracked as a result of too much shock. In most cases, the screen is the component that may get damaged. We think this is what happened to your phone as it still vibrates. This means that the motherboard may still be working but the screen may be gone. Try to check the extent of the damage and see if the problem goes away after some time. If you’re lucky and the issue is temporary, or if the screen still works, you may be able to continue using the phone until you decide to have it swapped for a new one, or to have it repaired.

Keep in mind that there’s no software changes that you can do to fix a physically broken screen. If the crack is significant enough to cause it to fail whatever you do, then you must skip the rest of the troubleshooting steps below and send the phone in for repair right away.

If the screen still displays a full image, or if it appears to work normally despite the crack, but the phone won’t charge, then your next troubleshooting step is to see if there’s visible damage to the charging port. As an end user, there’s not much that you can do if the charging port was damaged after dropping the phone. What you can do at this point is to perform an ocular inspection in order for you to get an idea why the device is not charging. You are not here to repair the charging port if it’s visibly damage. Just like with the screen, you have to leave the fixing to those who does it for a living.

If the port is clear and there’s no visible damage to it at all, then you want to go ahead and proceed to the next troubleshooting step.

Restarting a buggy device sometimes fixes it. If you haven’t tried doing a soft reset, which is a simulation of the effects of a “battery pull,” then we suggest that you do it now. This should clear the system and possibly get rid of the bug as well. To do that, simply press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons for about 10 seconds. Once the phone has restarted, release the buttons. This is usually effective in clearing bugs that developed when a system is left running for some time. We suggest that you restart your A50 using this method at least once a week to lessen the chances of bugs.

For some Galaxy A50, there may be a slightly different way to arrive at the same method. Here’s how:

  1. Press and hold the Power + Volume Down buttons for approximately 10 seconds or until the device power cycles. Allow several seconds for the Maintenance Boot Mode screen to appear.
  2. From the Maintenance Boot Mode screen, select Normal Boot. You can use the volume buttons to cycle through the available options and the lower left button (below the volume buttons) to select. Wait for up to 90 seconds for the reset to complete.

Another basic thing that you must do at this point is to allow the phone to charge. Make sure to let your device top up the battery for at least 30 minutes or longer. Do not interrupt the charging session by attempting to turn it on. This should allow enough power to be transferred to the battery. If your Galaxy A50 has just lost power, this may help.

Should your Galaxy A50 still won’t turn on at this point, it’s a good idea to check if there’s a problem with the charging cable and adapter. You must do this even if there’s no obvious signs of damage to the USB cable and adapter. Try to borrow an original set of Samsung cable and adapter for the Galaxy A50. If that’s not possible, you can visit your local Samsung store and try their own Galaxy A50 cable and adapter.

Another possible reason why your phone may appear off at this time is a damaged screen. If the the phone still vibrates, makes sound notifications, or shows LED light, then there may be a problem with the screen. This usually happens when a device is dropped and the display is shattered. Basically, what’s happening is that the screen is damaged but the motherboard is still working normally. However, since the screen is the gateway to the system, it needs to be fixed first so you can continue using your device. If the screen won’t come on at all, you’ll need to send the phone in to Samsung so it can be repaired first. If all is well inside, then your phone should work normally after that.

If your Galaxy A50 still vibrates but won’t turn on at this point, you should consider booting the device to Safe Mode. In regular troubleshooting, this step is recommended to check for the possibility of an app causing a problem. In your case though, you want to restart your A50 to see if it can successfully do so. Safe Mode is another software environment that blocks third party apps. It doesn’t run the full version of the Operating System so if the device can still run on Safe Mode, this means that there may be a glitch with Android. To run your A50 to safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power button until the Power off window appears then release.
  2. Touch and hold Power off until the Safe mode prompt appears then release.
  3. To confirm, tap Safe mode.
  4. The process may take up to 30 seconds to complete.
  5. Upon reboot, “Safe mode” appears in the lower-left of the home screen.

Another possible reason why your A50 won’t turn on may have something to do with Android Operating System. Although it’s rare, updates or system-wide changes may sometimes cause severe coding problems that may prevent Android from booting up properly. This can manifest in failing to restart, being stuck in Samsung logo screen, or failing to power back on after turning off. If the cause of the problem is an Android OS glitch, you should still be able to restart the device to other software environments like Recovery Mode or Download Mode. These boot modes are independent of Android and are used by Samsung technicians to diagnose software problems. To check if you have an Android issue, consider booting your device to any of them. If your Tablet boots to Recovery mode, you may be able to fix the problem by wiping the cache partition or doing a factory reset. In Download MOde, the only thing that you can do there is to reflash the software. If you haven’t heard of the term flashing before or if you are not confident to do it yourself, you should seek help from Samsung.

How to boot a Galaxy A50 to Recovery Mode

  1. Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).

How to boot a Galaxy A50 to Download Mode

  1. Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Down key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. You’ll know if you’re on Download Mode when you see a screen that says “Downloading….”
  4. Remember, if the screen works in any of these modes, that’s a clear sign that you have an Android OS issue. Be sure to factory reset the device in Recovery Mode to fix it.

In case you haven’t noticed, almost all suggestions above ask you to perform software troubleshooting only.
