Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge that won’t connect or forget a network

Problem: Hi there, my Samsung S7 Edge won’t let me connect to certain wifi networks.  Everyone else can connect to the network I’m trying to connect to except me.  My boyfriend has the exact same phone and his has no problem.  I can see the network but it doesn’t ask me for the password and when I click on it, it does nothing.  I can’t forget the network because I have never been able to connect to it.  Any solutions would be greatly appreciated. Kim

Solution: Since you mentioned that your device is the only one having an issue connecting to a network. In my point of view, there are two possibilities that caused it: First, the problem must be in your device network software or hardware-related. Second, from the network you are trying to connect with. To narrow down the issue, we recommend performing some basic troubleshooting procedures to determine the culprit. Follow the steps below to begin:

Step 1: Restart your device and Turn Off/On your Wi-fi

I know, this is pretty much basic procedure to perform to your device but, it’s effective. It can fix minor system glitch that needs to refresh the system. Simply turn off and on your device by press and holding the Power key. Then, once you’re back at the home screen, open your Wi-fi.

Make sure that it’s turned on, then select the network you want to connect with.

It will display ‘connected’ or ‘Obtaining IP address…’ something like it. If it won’t connect, then proceed to the next step.

Step 2: What type of network is this? If private, Reset Router

Since others were able to connect to the network without problem, the question now is “What type of network you are trying to connect with, public or private? There’s several type of network and it depends on how it’s used to or who owns it.

If this is a public network, there are two common possibilities, First, it could be the ‘network is congested’. Second, ‘MAC address filter’ is on. The open networks like in Malls, restaurants, terminals, etc. are considered public and it’s expected to have issues connecting due to congested network. If it’s not congested, possibly the MAC filter is on, this feature will let the device connect to the network if the MAC address of the device was on the list. If not, even if how long or how many times you restart your device it won’t connect.

Now, if this network is at home, then you can try and reset the router. Unplug the router for about 25-30 seconds then plug it in. You can try and check the ‘MAC filter’ feature as well to make sure that it’s not on. If you don’t know how to do it, let someone who are capable of doing it or call your service provider.

Step 3: Make sure that your device software are up to date

The best thing that you should do is to make sure that all your device softwares are up to date, you can receive a notification if new updates are available to download. If there are no notifications, then follow these steps below to manually download it.

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap About phone or About device
  3. Tap Download updates manually. Your device will find the latest software version.
  4. There are three options to choose “Later”, “Install Overnight”, “Install Now”. It depends on you which of the choices is right for you.
  5. A notification message will appear after the download is done.

Step 4: Try other networks you know or was connected

If you know someplace with Wi-fi network connection and know the password, then try to connect your device. This is to determine if either your device has a problem or the network you are connecting with. If ever you were able to connect to it without an issue, then you might have to call your service provider if they can do anything about the router. Otherwise, bring your device to the nearest service center to let the tech have a look at your device, it could be serious issue.

Step 5: Turn off Airplane mode or Power Saving Mode

These modes can greatly affect your device connection especially the Wi-fi. Actually, there’s a difference between the two.

The Airplane mode is used when you’re travelling on a plane, it disabled all radio communications, bluetooth, GPS, and Wi-fi. This is to avoid causing problems to the plane’s sensors however, there are other companies allowed their passengers to use in-flight Wi-fi but radio communications are still disabled.

The Power Saving mode is basically used to prolong the battery life of the device, it disabled some apps especially those using an auto-update feature, minimizes CPU usage, minimize sounds, disabled Wi-fi and others.

So, make sure that none of these modes are On to successfully connect to a network.

Step 6: Bring the Device to a tech

If all procedures fail and none resolve the issue, it’s time to bring your device to a tech. It’s possible there’s something wrong with your device Wi-fi or might be a hardware-related.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge that randomly disconnects from Wifi network

Problem: Hey! The Droid Guy! I bought my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge two weeks ago. It was working fine until couple days ago. The internet connection (wi-fi and mobile data)  cut off at night for no reason, I checked the other devices on the same wifi network and they were working well. I rebooted the device few times but nothing happened.

I don’t know what to do! Please help!

Solution: It looks like the issue is caused by other app, it could be an scheduler app. But, there were reports that this issue mostly coming from the router, some suggested that changing the access point and bandwidth channel fix the issue.  If not, some configurations in your Settings was not set correctly like the Airplane mode or power saving was turn On. Since the issue is unclear, we recommend to run some troubleshooting procedure to narrow down the issue.

Boot in Safe mode

This is a diagnostic mode, it disabled all third-party app and run only the pre-installed. This is the best way to determine if the issue caused by third-party app. Normal use while in this mode is possible as well as removing the suspected app.

Since the issue happened during night time, it’s the best time to boot your device in Safe mode. If it happens between 6pm-12mn, then boot your device by 5pm. Then, make sure that you observe your device to determine if the Wi-fi still drops. Follow the steps below on how to boot in Safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power key.
  2. As soon as you can see the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7 EDGE’ on the screen, release the Power key and immediately hold the Volume Down key.
  3. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the device finishes rebooting.
  4. You may release it when you can see ‘Safe mode’ in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Check your Router

There’s a possible reason that the problem is your router. Actually, there were reports that some owners try to change the connection settings of their router and it did resolve the issue. The suggested setting was to change the current connection or access point from IPv6 to IPv4. Now, changing the router’s setting might be tricky, so if you don’t have an idea how to change it then you might have to find people who knows how to do it or better yet, call your service provider.

You can follow the procedures above for more troubleshooting procedures. In case, all procedures didn’t work and it keeps dropping the Wi-fi connection, then your device Wi-fi radio must be the problem. Only the accredited professionals can perform complex procedure to handle the issue, or else bring back the device to the store where bought it from. Bring the necessary documentation like the warranty, they might change the unit with a new one.

How to fix Galaxy S7 Edge with Wi-Fi switch that’s disabled or greyed out

Problem: Hi. Please help me guys because my phone has a problem that I haven’t encountered before. First off, my phone is a Galaxy S7 Edge and I think there was an update recently that could have caused the problem. The issue is that it can no longer connect to Wi-Fi and the worse thing is that the Wi-Fi switch seems to have been disabled for some reason because it’s greyed out or something. This is actually the first time that I encountered a problem like this so I don’t know what to do. Can you help? Thanks.

Troubleshooting: Glitches happen all the time and it seems that this issue is one of them. If you’re positive enough that it occurred after an update, then it might have been caused by some corrupt caches or data but we also have to rule out the possibility that some of the apps are causing the problem. Below are some procedures you can follow to try to fix this problem. But before that, I just want you to know that we’ve encountered a lot of issues like this before and the first step always worked.

Step 1: Reboot your phone in safe mode and toggle Wi-Fi switch on / off

This procedure is very effective if the problem is caused by some third-party elements. Booting your device in safe mode will temporarily disable all third-party apps and services so if one of them is causing the problem, then you should be able to toggle the Wi-Fi switch on and off while in this state.

Once the phone is in this mode, toggle the Wi-Fi switch on and off to see if it works, if it does, leave it on and then reboot your phone. That should keep the switch on and fix the problem. However, if the issue persists, then you should go after the system cache.

Step 2: Wipe the cache partition so the system cache will be deleted and replaced

System caches can be deleted without adverse effects, in fact, it’s even recommended that you clear off old caches so that they will be replaced with new ones especially every after firmware updates. This problem might be one of the cases of corrupt caches and here’s what you need to do:

  1. Turn off the phone.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished wiping the cache partition. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

After the phone has successfully restarted, try to check if the Wi-Fi switch is still disabled and if so, then the next step must be done.

Step 3: Do the Master Reset on your device to bring it back to its default configuration

Your issue is not actually that serious, in fact, the first two steps are more often enough to fix it. The reset, however, is a sure fix in case the first two steps failed. The reason why it comes as the last resort is because you will have to go through the hassle of backing up your data and files. But if all else failed, then you really have to do this:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key. NOTE: It doesn’t matter how long you press and hold the Home and Volume Up keys, it won’t affect the phone but by the time you press and hold the Power key, that’s when the phone starts to respond.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds. NOTE: The “Installing system update” message may show on the screen for several seconds before displaying the Android system recovery menu. This is just the first phase of the entire process.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual
