How to fix Galaxy Note 8 that keeps freezing and lagging after an update

Performance issues that start to manifest after an update are often caused by corrupt and / or obsolete system caches. These are small temporary files created by the system to make apps, functions and services run smoother. They are often created when you first use the app or service. For system caches, they’re created when during the first boot up.

Firmware updates may leave some caches to become obsolete as there would be a new Android version running. Usually, they are automatically replaced but there are times when old caches aren’t replaced and that’s when issues like this occur. You actually don’t have access to those files, you just delete them all at once and the system will automatically recreate them. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Turn your Galaxy Note 8 off.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘yes’ is highlighted and press the Power button.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

You’re actually just deleting the system caches when you wipe the cache partition and no other. All your files and data will remain intact so it’s safe to do and very effective when it comes to issues like this. However, if the phone continues to freeze and lag after this, then you’ll have to do more than the wiping off of the cache partition.

Troubleshooting Galaxy Note 8 that keeps freezing and lagging after an update

Apparently, the problem is more than just due to corrupt system caches. You have to do a couple more procedures to determine what causes and hopefully fix it. The following procedures may be able to tell and help you fix the problem.

Run the phone in safe mode

Running the Galaxy Note 8 in safe mode alone won’t fix the problem but it will tell you if the problem is caused by some third-party apps or not. So say for instance the phone works perfectly fine without those freezes and lags in safe mode, then it’s clear that there’s a third-party app that’s causing it since all third-party apps are temporarily disabled in safe mode. Therefore, the next thing you have to do in this case is to find the app that’s causing the problem and uninstall it.

Here’s how you run your phone in safe mode…

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
  3. When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

And this is how you uninstall an app from your phone…

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap the desired application in the default list or tap 3 dots icon > Show system apps to display preinstalled apps.
  4. Tap the desired application.
  5. Tap Uninstall.
  6. Tap Uninstall again to confirm.
  7. Reboot your phone back in normal mode.

On the other hand, if the freezes and lags continue even in safe mode, then you have no other choice but to do the next procedure.

Backup your files and data and reset your phone

I am certain that the reset will fix this issue but this method always comes at the end because of the hassle you will have to go through in backing up your files and data. But you have no other choice so take time to backup all your important files.  After the backup, disable the Factory Reset Protection by removing your Google account from your phone, then follow these steps:

  1. Turn off your Galaxy Note 8.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

If everything else fails, it’s time to bring the phone to the service center and have it checked. Should you have other concerns you want us to address, feel free to contact us anytime.
