Troubleshooting Galaxy J7 with “Unfortunately, Internet has stopped” error

Problem: Hi droid guy. I hope you can help me with my problem. I have a Galaxy J7 phone and whenever I try to browse the web, my internet stops. At least, that’s what it says in the error message “Unfortunately, Internet has stopped.” But with this error message on, I can still receive and send my emails so I don’t understand why it’s saying my internet has stopped when it’s working. The error is very annoying though. Can you help?

Troubleshooting: First off, the Internet app is just a web browser. The error message says it stopped but it doesn’t necessarily mean that your internet connection is dropped. That’s why you’re still getting your emails and probably can send one without any problem. Now, let’s try to troubleshoot your phone so we would know the problem…

Step 1: Clear the cache and data of the Internet app

This will reset the app and bring it back to its factory default settings. You may lose your bookmarks and browsing history but none of your files will be deleted. In other words, it’s safe to do and very effective in addressing problems like this. Here’s how you do it:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Applications.
  4. Tap Application manager.
  5. Tap the desired application in the default list or tap MORE > Show system apps to display pre-installed apps.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear cache.
  8. Tap Clear data and then tap OK.

Try to reboot your phone if it kind of slows down after clearing the cache and data. It might be the only procedure you should do to fix the problem but there’s no guarantee. So, if the problem persists after doing this, move on to the next step.

Step 2: Start your phone in Safe mode and open Internet

This will isolate the problem and tell you if the problem is caused by a third-party app or not. If it’s a third-party app that’s causing the error to pop up, then it’s easier to fix it. But then again, it’s also possible that the problem is caused by a built-in app or a firmware issue. Anyways, here’s how you boot your phone in safe mode:

  1. Turn your Galaxy J7 off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  3. When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

While the phone is in this mode, try to open the Internet app to see if the error still pops up. While booting in safe mode alone doesn’t fix the problem, it’s crucial to our troubleshooting. If the problem still persists, the problem could be with the app or the firmware. Otherwise, it’s the one or some of the third-party apps you installed that cause the problem. In this case, move on to the next step.

Step 3: Find the app that’s causing the problem, reset it and / or uninstall it

Finding the app that’s causing the problem is easier said than done but if you really want to fix the problem, then it’s worth your efforts. You should start your search from apps you installed prior to the problem. If you already suspect an app, then you have to clear its cache and data first and then reboot your phone back to normal mode and then open the Internet app. If the error still shows up, uninstall it.

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.

You may have to uninstall more than one app to fix the problem.

Step 4: Reboot your Galaxy J7 in Recovery mode and wipe cache partition

There was an update for the Galaxy J7 that was rolled out recently. If you’re one of the users who downloaded it and shortly after that the problem started, then it might be that some of the caches got corrupted or became obsolete. Delete all of them at once so the phone will create new ones:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  4. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).

  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Step 5: Backup your files and reset your phone

After doing all the steps above and the problem persists, then you should reset your phone. However, make sure you back up your files and data as they will be deleted. Also, make sure you disable the Factory Reset Protection so you won’t be locked out of your phone.
