Fans Rejoice as NVIDIA Shield TV gets Android 9 Pie

While there are millions of Android customers out there who haven’t seen the Android 9 Pie update yet, NVIDIA casually pops by with an update to the NVIDIA Shield TV which was launched in 2015. That’s unparalleled software support like no other company we’ve seen in recent memory. For reference, the Shield TV launched with Android 5.1 Jelly Bean on board, so it’s clear that the console has come a long way since then.

NVIDIA calls this the SHIELD Software Experience Upgrade 8.0, which should start hitting devices anytime now. Among the many features that Pie brings, the addition of “Match Content Color Space” allows the console to adjust automatically to HDR compatible TVs. The update also “Improves volume dynamic range” for Bluetooth and USB headsets, which is something that Shield TV owners will welcome.

As you would expect, the Shield TV still comes with plenty of games with new titles constantly being added, including Shield exclusive offerings. All of this goes to show that investing in NVIDIA made Android hardware is probably a good bet for the long run, particularly with regards to software updates. Although NVIDIA doesn’t run a stock Android ROM on its console, its update cycle has been pretty impressive so far.

In a time when people don’t trust manufacturers beyond two years for updates, NVIDIA is showing that with a little effort and the will, it can be done. Let’s hope that other manufacturers follow the company’s example.
