Here’s what you should do with your Galaxy S9 with Messenger app that’s not working after the Android Pie update…

  1. Force restart your phone first.
  2. Try to update the Messenger and Facebook itself.
  3. Clear its cache and data.
  4. Uninstall Messenger and then reinstall it.

When it comes to troubleshooting a problem caused by applications, it’s recommended that you begin the process with a reboot. However, I suggest you perform the forced restart as it’s way more effective than the normal restart. To do this, press and hold the volume down button and the power key at the same time for 10 seconds or more. This will restart the phone like it normally does but its memory is refreshed and its apps and services reloaded. This procedure often fix software-related problems. So, after doing this, open Messenger and see if it still crashes or not. If it still does, then try the next procedure.

Open the Play Store and then go to My Apps. From there, you will see a list of apps that have available updates. Try to see if the Messenger is among them as well as the Facebook app. Or better yet, update every app that’s on that list to make sure everything in your phone is running the latest version. After this, open Messenger to see if the problem still occurs. If it still does or if there’s no available update for Facebook and Messenger, then move on to the next solution.

Try resetting the app by clearing its cache and data. You can do so in the Settings and under the Application Manager. This will delete and replace the cache created by the system as well as the necessary data files used by the system and app whenever it’s open. Most of the time, this procedure will fix app issues like this so you should try it. However, if the app still crashes after doing this method, then you have no other choice but to uninstall it, reboot your phone and then reinstall it from the Play Store. This will make sure that you are running the latest version of the app. As far as this problem is concerned, these are all the things you have to do to fix it. There’s no need to do the factory reset.
