With Verizon’s Straight Talk Wireless service, you can choose from a number of excellent phones that cost less than $200 without a contract — not to even mention that you get access to cheap data plans as well. It’s perfect for those on a budget. And if you decide to sign a contract, you can get a flagship phone for less than $50 a month, which is more than many device payment plans, but will still enable you to get the latest and greatest phones with a cheap data plan. To help you pick the best phone for you, we’ve selected eight of our favorite, cheap Straight Talk phones under $200 in 2019.

Galaxy S7 Edge

Coming up as first on our list, we have the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. If you don’t mind spending a little more than $200, this is an excellent phone that will bring you a sweet, high-end phone experience. A couple years old, yes, but the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is still one of the smoothest and fastest devices you can buy today.

It has top of the line hardware for the year it was released, but the highlight of the phone is scree. You get excellent, almost Retina-like clarity. But, on top of that, it has a dual-edge display that brings you not only a new dimension, but some added features for quicker access to contacts for phone and text.

ZTE Max Duo

The ZTE Max Duo is a really cheap option on Straight Talk, getting you into a cheap phone for just $135 outright. It has some decent hardware and software on it as well. It’s still running Android 5.1 Lollipop, but the software is quick and efficient. It has a massive 6-inch 1080p touchscreen, so you get excellent clarity as well. And with an octa-core processor and plenty of RAM, the Max Duo should be able to handle most applications on the Google Play Store.

Samsung Galaxy S5

The Samsung Galaxy S5 might be much older than the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S10 that’s now out; however, the S5 was a pinnacle point for Samsung. It was what started defining Samsung as a premium offer of smartphones. The Galaxy S5 has an attractive design, and an overall smooth experience. It comes with an excellent camera (though a little dated by today’s standards), has some good processing power, and most importantly, has an excellent screen that brings you tons of clarity. Samsung may be known the most for its flagship smartphones with cutting-edge features and impressive performance, but the company is also great at making affordable budget smartphones for everyday use.

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro offers all the reliability you would expect from a device with Samsung’s logo on it, as well as decent performance and great features, for less than $100. Making phone calls, sending text messages, facetiming, using Apple Maps, or browsing the web are all examples of tasks that are easily possible with the iPhone 6.

How To Unlock A Straight Talk Phone

Trying to unlock your smartphone on Straight Talk? Maybe you’re in a poor service area and need to use the SIM from another carrier, or you’re headed out on international travel and want to use a local carrier in your destination country. Either way, your Straight Talk phone needs to be unlocked to use it on another network. There’s a few prerequisites that you have to meet, but the overall process is pretty easy. Follow along below!

Prerequisites

Unlike popular opinion, Straight Talk phones come locked, not unlocked. The confusion is that since Straight Talk is owned by Verizon, who ships phones as unlocked, Straight Talk phones would be unlocked, too. That isn’t the case — Straight Talk has at least one requirement that you have to meet in order to unlock your phone:

  1. Straight Talk will unlock your phone after 12 months of pay-as-you-go service. It has to be consecutive, uninterrupted service.
  2. Straight Talk will unlock phones of current and former Straight Talk customers without charge; however, if you purchased a Straight Talk phone as a private seller (i.e. a non-former customer), you may still request an unlock code, but Straight Talk may charge a reasonable fee to provide this.
  3. Customers must possess a Straight Talk phone that is not reported stolen, lost, or associated with fraudulent activity (i.e. not blacklisted).

Military members don’t have to necessarily meet all of these requirements either. You will have to use a Straight Talk phone that isn’t blacklisted, but you don’t have to meet the others. Provide your deployment papers, and Straight Talk will honor the unlocking request.

As you can see, there aren’t a lot of requirements, but it’s still a pretty strict one. Once you meet the prerequisite, you can call up Straight Talk and have them give you, text you, or email you an unlock code.

How to unlock a Straight Talk phone

Unlocking a Straight Talk phone is easy. First, make sure you have the unlock code handy, and then we can proceed with the process.

  1. Shut down the phone
  2. Remove the Straight Talk SIM card, and replace with your carrier of choice’s SIM card.
  3. Power on your phone.
  4. Enter the unlock code when prompted.

And that’s all there is to it!

What carrier can you use a Straight Talk phone on?

After you unlock your Straight Talk phone, you can take it to at least three carriers. You can use it on Verizon, as Straight Talk is Verizon owned. If the phone is made in 2015 or later, you can take it on GSM networks like AT&T and T-Mobile as well. Unfortunately, you might not have great luck on Sprint and its subsidiaries.

You can use phones from before 2015 on GSM carriers as well; however, you’ll have to make sure that they have they necessary radios and hardware support for calling, text messages, and 4G LTE data.

Use a third-party service

Straight Talk, just like other carriers out there, has some red tape in place that makes it difficult to unlock a phone. There are requirements you have to meet, and if you don’t meet them, your unlock request is denied. Luckily, as a last resort, you can use a third-party service to unlock your smartphone. Using a third-party unlocking company can get your phone operating on another network in no time, and without all of the red tape from your carrier. It does usually cost some money, which can range from a couple bucks all the way up to an average of $60.

You’ll want to search around and research good companies for this, though. Make sure they’re reputable, otherwise you might end up handing your money to one in return for, well, nothing. Once you purchase a code, it’s usually sent directly to the provided email, and then you can follow the included steps to unlock your phone.

Verdict

Straight Talk’s requirements are pretty few, but still pretty strict. Having to have 12-months of straight pay-as-you-go service is a difficult one to meet as a prepaid service, as not everyone sticks with prepaid for long. So if you don’t meet Straight Talk’s requirements for unlocking a smartphone, you might think you’re out of luck — but not quite. As we mentioned, a third-party service is a great last resort. You’ll have to pay some extra cash upfront for an unlock code, but they’ll enable you to bypass the barriers that Straight Talk puts in front of you.

Galaxy S6 can’t send out emails when using wifi, mobile data stopped working, other issues

Good everyone. This troubleshooting post discusses some connectivity-related problems on the #GalaxyS6. As usual, the cases mentioned here are taken from reports submitted by some members of our Android community. We hope you’ll find this material helpful.

Problem 1: Galaxy S6 wifi stopped working after changes in Device Management were made

My husband has a Samsung S6. Yesterday, he was messing around in the Device Maintenance option in Settings and now his WIFI won’t turn on. The icon is black and turns a light blue when it is tapped and you can toggle the WIFI switch to on (but not to off) in settings. It says turn in on but does not progress past that. You cannot open a WIFI sub menu to see any networks either. I have tried rebooting his device several times, rebooting into safe mode (the problem persisted in safe mode) and wiping cache partitions. None of these has fixed the issue. The phone is working fine otherwise. All other features e.g.. Bluetooth, mobile date etc. are working normally. It seems as tho he changed a setting while in the Device Maintenance area but I cannot figure out what and he does not remember what he changed. I am at a loss. Please help. — Crystal Provo

Solution: Hi Crystal. If you are positive that changes were made under Device Management section only, there’s a chance that he may have selected the one of the two power saving modes under Settings>Device Maintenance>Battery. These two options are MID and MAX, previously known as Power Saving Mode and Ultra Power SAving Mode, respectively Any of these modes aim to lower battery consumption of the device by modifying energy intensive functions such as screen brightness, screen resolution, CPU speed, and network usage. Once selected, network usage will be cut drastically by disabling both wifi and mobile data, though a user can turn them back on later. To see if this is the case, try to return the phone to its normal power consumption mode by doing the following steps:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Device Maintenance.
  3. Tap Battery.
  4. Tap OFF.

If doing the steps above won’t fix the issue, do a factory reset by doing these steps:

  1. Create a backup of your important files.
  2. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  4. When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  5. Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  6. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  7. Press the Vol Down button again until the option Yes — delete all user data is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  8. After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

Problem 2: Galaxy S6 with Straight Talk SIM can’t receive calls and texts

My husband and I both have Samsung S6 phones (which were AT&T) changed to Straight Talk. Have been working perfectly for two years. Yesterday they both showed “no service” at the same time. Let it sit, started both phones again. No change. Called Straight Talk, they refreshed both phones. No change. Can’t receive calls or texts. Turned wifi off, no change. Airplane mode is not on. Can make calls on both phones. While on a call, old texts and messages come flooding in. Any suggestions?

It seems all info put in for Straight Talk is correct in Settings. Thanks for your help. — Scharr

Solution: Hi Scharr. If both phones were working normally before the issues occurred out of the blue, there are two possible causes for it:

  1. something has changed in both accounts, or
  2. there’s an on-going network issue in your area.

It’s very unlikely that the issue is due to a device issue since both devices suffers from the same problem almost around the same time. There may be a provisioning issue in both accounts so you must talk to your carrier to ensure that everything is set normally. Provisioning procedures vary by system so only your carrier’s technical support team can help you with this. Provisioning issue means that there is an incorrect parameter in an account which may be directly or indirectly linked to the issue. If a regular technical support representative can’t fix the issue, consider talking to a supervisor or manager so a higher level of support can double check the accounts. If they’ve already done everything on their levels, make sure to get a new SIM card. If that won’t fix it either you may even have to try changing your number to ensure that your account is reworked.

If nothing works still, there’s a chance that there may be an unknown problem with the network. If possible, try to insert another known working SIM card and see if Straight Talk’s services work in your location. If you’ll encounter the same trouble, let Straight Talk know so they can do something about it.

Problem 3: Galaxy S6 can’t send out emails when using wifi

Hi. I’m trying to help my mom with her Samsung Galaxy S6 ( I use an Apple so not much help). She has a global email account and is connected to my wifi at home whilst she visits. She is able to receive emails but when she replies to one it says “unable to send email – error occurred on email server.”. How can I help her setup so it works off my WiFi. Do I need to create another gmail account for her and setup as default to use WiFi? Please help. — Hamish.james

Solution: Hi Hamish.james. This can be a case wherein the email service provider restricts an account from sending emails over an untrusted network (your internet service provider). In other words, the email provider’s SMTP server (outgoing server), for security reasons, does not allow an account to send emails out in third party networks unless the account can authenticate login credentials. To fix the issue, consider turning on Authentication required before sending emails option. To do this in the standard Samsung email app, do these steps:

  1. Open Email app.
  2. Tap More settings icon (three horizontal lines at the upper left).
  3. Tap the Gear icon.
  4. Tap the Account you’re having a problem with.
  5. Scroll down to the bottom and tap Server settings.
  6. Move the slider for Authentication required before sending emails option to the right to turn it on.

If your mom is using a different email app, find the server settings in said app and look for anything that says something about authentication required for outgoing emails.

If our solution above won’t help, tell your mom to contact her email provider for direct assistance.

Problem 4: Galaxy S6 mobile data suddenly stopped working

My Galaxy S6 suddenly won’t connect to the network via data. I have performed a soft reset, checked the APN settings, as well as anything else I could think of that might affect the data connection. I haven’t downloaded any new apps, but have applied all current updates to applicable apps. I don’t see the little data icon that usually appears at the top of the screen (the one that will say 4G if available with the 2 little arrows that indicate download or upload). The phone has performed flawlessly for over 2 years. I am an engineer, and understand how cell phones work from a technical standpoint, but this has me stumped. My carrier is Tag Mobile, who uses the T-Mobile network. — Holland Phillips

Solution: Hi Holland. Have you tried checking how mobile data works when the phone is on safe mode? A third party app may be affecting this function for some reason so it’s a good first troubleshooting step. To do that, kindly follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down and Power keys for 20 to 30 seconds.
  2. Once you see the Samsung logo, release the Power key immediately but continue pressing the Volume Down key.
  3. Your phone should continue booting up and you will be prompted to unlock your phone as usual.
  4. You will know if the phone successfully booted in safe mode if the text “Safe mode” is displayed at the lower-left corner of the screen.

If mobile data works when your phone is on safe mode, that means that our suspicion in on target. To fix the issue, you must use the process of elimination to identify the problematic app.

However, if the problem remains even when the device is on safe mode, wiping the cache partition may help. Here’s how:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Finally, if a cache partition wipe won’t help either, do a factory reset to return all software settings back to their known working state. Refer to the steps above on how to do it.

Remember, factory reset and two previous solutions can only fix an issue due to a fault in the device. Since you’re dealing with mobile data here, there’s a chance that the problem is account- or network-related as well. So, if nothing works after doing our suggestions, contact your carrier and let them help you troubleshoot the problem.

Problem #1: Galaxy S5 charges very slow

I currently own a Galaxy S5. Tonight i was holding it and it made the noise the phone makes when you plug a charger in, but I was not using a cord at all. I went to plug it into the charger (not the original) and it charged for a second and then it kept flashing and then eventually, the phone showed a “please use original charger” flag. I then found the original charger (that hasn’t completely charged correctly for some time. The phone showed the same message. I then proceeded to try 3 other chargers, one original from another Galaxy and one that was just a compatible Samsung charger, but none worked.  Then i took the battery out, numerous times and still nothing. i then took the battery out for a few seconds and re-placed it and then put the phone on airplane mode. The phone seems to be charging, but it’s very slow. Please don’t tell me I will need a new phone!!! Thank you. — Adrianne

Solution: Hi Adrianne. For an issue like yours, the most effective solution is almost always to get a replacement phone. The symptoms you describe are consistent with a malfunctioning charging port. To check if it’s indeed a hardware issue and not a software one, you must try to factory reset the device. If the cause of the problem is on operating system or apps level, factory reset should fix the problem, as the phone should charge normally right after the reset. If nothing changes though, there’s only one thing to blame — a bad charging port. Try cleaning the charging port with compressed air. Try to avoid poking the inside of the port to prevent breaking or bending possibly unaligned pins. Before using compressed air, try to use bright lighting and, if possible, magnification to look inside the port. If you’re lucky, removing a foreign object like lint or dust inside may bring back the normal functionality of the port.

Charging ports are usually one of the first hardware components that fail due to general wear and tear such as plugging and unplugging, mishandling of the device, corrosion, internal damage, and bending of metal contacts. Usually, a bad charging port is accompanied by overheating so if the charging port area heats up abnormally while charging, you can almost certainly assume that bad hardware is to blame. If you don’t have the knowledge and tools to perform a charging port replacement, your only choice in the matter is either repair or replacement. If you have access to a nearby Samsung service center, be sure to bring the device there. Otherwise, simply let a professional take a look at the said component so he/she can assess if it can be fixed or not.

For reference, below are the steps on how to factory reset your phone:

  1. Power down the Galaxy S5.
  2. Press and hold the Volume up button, the Home button, and the Power button together until you see the Android on screen.
  3. Use Volume down to highlight the wipe data/factory reset option and press the Power button to select it.
  4. Use Volume down again to highlight Yes – delete all user data and press Power to select it.
  5. Use the Power button to select Reboot system now.
  6. When the S5 restarts it should be completely wiped and ready to set up again.

Problem #2: Galaxy S5 mini stuck in Samsung logo screen after updating to Marshmallow

Hi. I have a mini S5 which i bought 2 years ago. Yesterday i got to upgrade my software version to Marshmallow. After an hour when i came back to see if it’s completed i noticed it was turned off and every time i was pressing the switch button only a small LED light at the top of my phone was showing. When i put it to charge my battery was low. After it charged i tried to switch it on but it was stuck and showed only the Samsung logo. I let it for a while but again my battery was low. After numerous tries i pressed the power on and volume down button but is asked for the custom OS warning which says a custom OS can cause critical problems. Please help me if you can. — Yash

Solution: Hi Yash. How did you get the Marshmallow update? Is it via over-the-air (OTA), or by manual flashing? If it’s the former, you must try to fix the software via Smart Switch emergency recovery tool, or with the help of Samsung Kies software. Both of these apps are provided by Samsung so simply install them in a computer and see which of them will work. If nothing changes after trying both of them, you must let your carrier know about the problem. You can also try to boot the phone to recovery mode so you can wipe the cache partition and factory reset. Here’s how to boot your phone to recovery mode:

  • Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  • Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  • When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.

If you tried to update the software via Odin mode, then the main reason for the problem may be an incorrect firmware or a step that you didn’t do right. Make sure that you use the correct firmware next time and follow the steps properly.

Problem #3: Galaxy S5 mobile data not working | Galaxy S5 won’t send/receive MMS

My Samsung Galaxy S5, ever since it updated, has been running slower. But my two major issues are:

  • it doesn’t allow me to send or receive any picture messages
  • it also doesn’t allow my mobile data to kick in while I’m not around wifi

It’s very frustrating. I have Google how to fix everything. it tells me to do it’s on already. How do I fixed these major issues I’m having? My plan is unlimited Internet so I know I should have mobile data when not around wifi but it won’t kick in. Please help me with these two major issues. I want to be able to send pictures, throw text messaging and can’t send or receive. It just keeps trying or keeps saying download. Please email me back  the solutions to these issues. Solution: Hi Lilprincess6790. first of all, we want to make it a point that our blog does not send solutions to emails of those who ask assistance from us. We want to make our suggestions public so we apologize if you won’t receive any email from us. We do hope that you’ll find this post relevant at this time.

Secondly, your problem appears an account issue (with your wireless carrier) more than a phone problem. Sending and receiving of MMS won’t work unless mobile data on your phone is working. If you are in a GSM network, try to insert your SIM card to a known, working phone to see if mobile data is working or not. This is the only way to check on your end if the service is still active on your account. If mobile data remains non-functional in a second phone, contact your wireless carrier so they can assist you. We can’t do anything about a mobile data connection problem when the cause of the issue is due to billing or account problem.

Problem #4:  Galaxy S5 mobile data connection is intermittent

Hello. Got an issue with my Galaxy S5 for a week now. It is starting to get on my nerves. 🙂

Mobile internet works for few seconds then stops working and resumes again between 30 – 180 seconds. Sometimes I have to wait even more, but working internet last just for a few seconds. Reception is fine, no changes there. it shows data connection, when internet stops I see only arrow representing upload lit up, not flickering. Using Viber, Skype, just trying to browse news has become annoying. Since i have to wait for those “online” intervals. Now here is what i tried and what I didn’t. Got new configuration messages installed, rebooted, no help. Deleted configurations from phone, installed again, no help. Haven’t tried to put my SIM card to new phone (unable at the moment), so maybe it is the phone or SIM card (hopefully, it is easy to replace). As soon as i have time i will backup my phone reset to factory settings, install latest update to Android (still on Lollipop). Thanks. — Miki

Solution: Hi Miki. Aside from your plan to factory reset the device and try the SIM card to another phone, we also suggest that you contact your wireless carrier so they’ll know about the issue. There may be an on-going issue in the area affecting some of their subscribers so telling them about your problem should help them assist you more effectively. There’s really nothing much that we can tell you on what to do as issues like yours are better handled by carriers.

In case the issue is due to a third party app, you can observe the phone while it’s in safe mode. Safe mode blocks third party apps and services so if the issue won’t occur, that’s proof that our hunch is correct. Safe mode won’t help you identify the culprit though so you must invest some time narrowing down the possible causes. Below are the steps on how to boot the phone to safe mode:

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key.
  • When ‘Samsung Galaxy S5′ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

Problem #5: Verizon Galaxy S5 no longer connects to Straight Talk mobile data after an update

Hi! Love your site, loads of good info. My issue is as follows. I bought a Samsung Galaxy S5 used and bought an accompanying “bring your own phone” package. Everything set up fine and I used it for several months. Recently there was a software update available which I started. There was a problem and the phone ended up getting turned off. The update was then failed and the phone would then only show me the screen saying that the update had failed and I needed to run the Verizon Software Upgrade Assistant (the repair portion) to repair the phone and finish the update. After a few failed attempts, the repair assistant finally worked overnight while I was sleeping. The phone was usable again. It sent and received texts and calls and hooked up to wifi fine but will not connect to the internet via data. When I go to look at the APN it shows VZWINTERNET and only that one. Doesn’t give me the option to add others either (plus sign is gray and unclickable). So I tried having Straight Talk update my APN and data settings but it shows up as an incompatible SIM, even though it is absolutely the same Straight Talk SIM I’ve had and was working. Did the repair assistant mess up my SIM? Is there any way to fix it or do I now need a new SIM? Thank you in advance for your consideration. — J. Scott

Solution: Hi J. Scott. We don’t think it’s the SIM card that’s messed up. The Verizon software assistant must have reconfigured the device’s firmware, erasing non-Verizon settings and restoring the default factory settings. Try bringing the phone to a shop that’s equipped with more advanced software so they can manually change some network settings. Alternatively, try to contact the original owner of the device and ask for instructions how the device became compatible with your current carrier. Keep in mind that reconfiguration of a CDMA phone like your S5 from Verizon is not straightforward. Most of the time, special software that require rooting the device may be needed to make a CDMA phone work in another network. We don’t have the knowledge or the tools to do the job so try to do some research when you have the time.

The usual dose of software troubleshooting such as wiping the cache partition and factory reset won’t help in this situation.

Problem #6: Galaxy S5 takes screenshots of games but photos can’t be found

Hello! I’m having a problem with my S5 and would love some insight on how to fix it or even an explanation on why it does it. I’ve had my S5 for almost a year now and until recently I was unaware that it takes screenshots/pictures of the games I have downloaded on my phone.  I recently started taking my phone to Walmart to use the Kiosk to print photos from my phone. When I plug my phone into the machine, it says 1200+ files found. I have around 800 pictures so I couldn’t understand where the extra pictures came from. When they load on the screen, more than half are screenshots of advertisements I’ve watched or screenshots of games I play. There are so many and it’s now taken up so much memory that I can’t download any apps or take any more pictures.  When I look for them on my phone to delete, I can only find the pictures I’ve taken. Where are these snaps going and how do I delete them? I just had a baby and can’t save any pics or videos because the stupid  memory is full of crap!  I hope you can understand my problem and give me some advice. Thank you for your time. — Heather

Solution: Hi Heather. If you can’t find the screenshots in the Gallery app, then they must be kept somewhere by the app that took them. Try using the pre-installed My Files app from Samsung to search every nook and cranny in your phone’s directory. We can’t tell you where to start because we are not aware of any app (malicious or not) that does this thing. If you want to get to the bottom of the problem, we suggest that you back everything up first with the help of Samsung Smart Switch app. Simply install the said app on your computer, then connect your phone to it via USB cable. Smart Switch will give you an option what files to transfer to your PC so you can either have everything moved or only a select few. Once you’ve created your back up, you can then factory reset your phone to wipe everything. Here’s how to do that:

  • Power down the Galaxy S5.
  • Press and hold the Volume up button, the Home button, and the Power button together until you see the Android on screen.
  • Use Volume down to highlight the wipe data/factory reset option and press the Power button to select it.
  • Use Volume down again to highlight Yes – delete all user data and press Power to select it.
  • Use the Power button to select Reboot system now.
  • When the S5 restarts it should be completely wiped and ready to set up again.

Once the phone has been factory reset, connect the phone to your computer again and restore your back up. Be careful not to install all your apps though. You have to filter every app you want to install as one of them is culprit. Make sure that you only install the ones you are familiar of. Try not to install back apps you don’t need at all. If the problem will return after a factory reset, that means that you simply re-introduced the app to your device. It’s up to you on how to identify which of them is the problem.

The service is sold by Walmart and offers a very compelling set of features for an attractive price of just $45 per month. Customers get to enjoy unlimited talk, text, and high-speed data using the infrastructure of all major carriers. What’s more, there’s no contract to sign, no credit checks to perform, and it works with most mobile phones on the market. You can even keep your old number and avoid the hassle of informing all your contacts about the change.

However, the completion is fierce, with plenty of attractive option to choose from. This review will tell with Straight Talk has what it takes to deserve our recommendation and your money.

Coverage and Speed

Straight Talk supports fast 4G LTE speeds, but you must own a compatible phone and Straight Talk’s 4G LTE SIM card. One unique feature of the service is that it runs on all four major U.S. cellular networks. In theory, this should give you the best signal strength and fastest download speed available in your area. Unfortunately, our practical experience confirms complaints of many users who say that download and upload speeds are on the slower side.

Our average download speed hovered around 7 Mbps, and upload was far behind, at just 3 Mbps. The very best result was measured in Chicago, where the download speed reached 10 Mbps. The strength of the signal wasn’t really the greatest either. It never really dipped too low to make us worried, but neither did it fill all signal bars.

Keep in mind that the numbers don’t really tell the whole story. Even though other carriers offer faster speeds, it doesn’t really make for a better everyday experience when you are actually using your smartphone or tablet. Web pages load as fast as your phone can handle, HD online video plays without buffering, and new apps don’t take forever to download.

Phones

Customers can select from a wide range of smartphones. Most of them are low- or medium-end devices, but there’s also a few premium phones to satisfy more demanding users. Some phone, such as the LG Optimus Dynamic II, ZTE Midnight, Samsung R375C, are even offered for free with the service.

ZTE Midnight: One of the free smartphones is the ZTE Midnight. This small, 3.5” touchscreen smartphone represents the lower end of Straight Talk’s range of mobile phone. The 832 MHz processor can support very basic usage, such as Internet browsing, and email. You can take pictures with its 3 MP camera or enjoy multimedia files stored on an expandable microSDHC card. The smartphone is limited to an old version of Android – Android 2.3 – but it’s hard to complain, given the attractive price of zero dollars.

Samsung Galaxy S6: Compared to the ZTE, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is on the opposite end of the smartphone spectrum. This stunning phone has a body made out of metal and glass and sports a large 5.1” touchscreen Super AMOLED display with Quad HD (2560X1440) resolution. Needless to say, it looks stunning. The ultra-fast 64-bit octa-core processor has more than enough power for all latest games and heavy multitasking. Owners of other Samsung phones know about the standard of quality when it comes to picture and video capture. Indeed, the Galaxy S6 doesn’t disappoint, and the 16 MP sensor and bright lens with f1.9 aperture capture crisp pictures under all light conditions.

iPhone 6s Plus: The 5.5” beauty with HD display and 3D Touch technology was a surprising find in Straight Talk’s catalog of smartphones. The new display can distinguish short taps from deep presses and provide adequate haptic feedback. The 12-megapixel iSight camera records 4K video footage at 30 fps and slo-mo video recording for 1080p at 120 fps. The smartphone itself is just as breathtaking as other Apple products, representing the very best that the world of smartphones has to offer.

Bring Your Own Phone

Apart from buying a new phone, customers can also bring their own device, thanks to Straight Talk’s Bring Your Own Phone program. Generally, all phones compatible with either AT&T, T-Mobile, or Sprint will work fine. The network supports unlocked GSM phones that operate on 850MHz and 1900MHz. CDMA phones require a few extra steps that check whether the device will work fine on the network.

The setup procedure of a new smartphone is straightforward: after you verify that your phone is compatible with Straight Talk, you need to buy an activation kit and service plan. This costs just $0.99, and it includes the necessary SIM card or network access code. With the SIM card installed, all that’s left to do is complete the simple activation process on Straight Talk’s website.

Pricing

There are current two plans to choose from: the $45 30-Day plan and the $60 30-Day plan. Both include unlimited minutes, texts, and data. Data limit is set to 5GB before it throttles to 2G speeds.

The more expensive plan adds international calling to over 1,000 destinations all over the world, making Straight Talk suitable even for international travelers.

Unfortunately, Straight Talk doesn’t accommodate low-usage scenarios, and you always have to pay for the entire month upfront.

Customer Service

Just like other services from TracFone Wireless Inc., even Straight Talk suffers from poor customer service. Problem-solving always involves, at least, some level of stress, due to hard-to-reach customer support and the long time before you get a response. According to J.D. Power and Associates surveys of customer care and the buying experience, Straight Talk finishes second to last in customer care and last in the buying experience.

Probably the best way how to Straight Talk Wireless customer service is to dial 877-430-2355 (or 1-888-442-5096) and then work through the automatic teller machine until you get to a real human being. The customer service desk is open Monday through Sunday from 8 am to 11:45 pm ET.

Verdict

Compared to other major carriers, Straight Talk wins when it comes to the amount of available data. If you often find yourself without a Wi-Fi connection, this is the plan to get. You should always keep in mind that the service relies on all major carriers, and you never know which one will be assigned to you based on your current location. This means that you could get a great download speed in one part of your town and mediocre ones in other.

Problem #1: Galaxy S5 SMS notification won’t go away in status bar

Hi there. So glad I found this site. So, I got a text the other day. I tried erasing it and the actual text message deleted. However, the notification is still showing one as if I have a new text. The envelope is also showing on the top of the phone which I have swiped down and hit clear several times. Unfortunately, it clears and then comes back. If I go into the message that it is telling me I have or hit reply to the envelope it takes me to a new “blank” message, it wants me to add a recipient. So, the actual text has been erased, but the number one is showing and the envelope is showing.

I have turned it off, I have taken out the battery, I have cleared the cache, and rebooted the system, thanks to this website 🙂 I am not that tech savvy and so I just wanted to tell you that your directions are awesome! My issue is not causing any use problems, it is just annoying me. Hopefully you understand what is happening and know how to fix it. I really appreciate any help you may give. Thank you in advance.

Oh by the way, I am not 100% sure that my version is Marshmallow as I don’t know how to determine what I have. I did see something about Marshmallow during my searching so that is why I think it is Marshmallow. Thanks again. — Heather

Solution: Hi Heather. We also experience this same exact bug from time to time so it’s definitely not isolated to your device. We can’t seem to find the real cause of this issue though so there’s no clear set of actions that we can provide to prevent it from happening again in the future. As far as troubleshooting is concerned, there are a number of potential solutions that you must try. Below are all of them.

  1. Delete a particular conversation thread. The first thing that you want to do is to see if the bug is only associated with a specific conversation thread the message you previously deleted belongs. Just head over to your messages list and erase the conversation thread by pressing and holding down the message. Once you’ve done that, restart the phone and check. If persistent notification is now gone, that means you’ve found the solution. If nothing changes after a phone restart, proceed to the next troubleshooting step.
  2. Wipe the cache of messaging app you’re using. Each app stores sets of temporary files about itself called cache that Android uses to load its services and other functions faster. Sometimes, an app’s cache becomes corrupt due to a number of reasons, resulting to erratic app behaviors. If an app starts to behave oddly, you can safely wipe its cache to see if you can bring it back to working order. Here’s how it’s done:
    • Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
    • Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6.0.
    • Once in there, look for your messaging app and tap it.
    • You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
    • You should now clearly see the Clear Cache buttons for the application. Tap it.
    • Restart the phone and observe.
  3. Delete the messaging app’s data. The steps for this solution are almost exactly the same with wiping the app’s cache. But instead of tapping on Clear cache button, you want to do the Clear data. Deleting an app’s data is the virtual equivalent of uninstalling and re-installing an app. This means that all your conversation threads will be wiped out. Make sure to create a back up of your important SMS before you proceed. There are many free apps that you can use to backup SMS in Google Play Store so feel free to explore your options. You can start with Helium – App Sync and Backup for example. We highly recommend though that you go through the traditional Samsung way of creating SMS backup by using its free Smart Switch app. You can download and install this app on your computer so you can then link your phone to it via USB.
  4. Restore all software settings to default via factory reset. If all three procedures above won’t help at all, wipe all user data on your phone by doing a factory reset. Here’s how:
    • Create a backup of your important files and contacts by using Smart Switch or any other back up tools.
    • Power down the Galaxy S5.
    • Press and hold the Volume up button, the Home button, and the Power button together until you see the Android on screen.
    • Use Volume down to highlight the wipe data/factory reset option and press the Power button to select it.
    • Use Volume down again to highlight Yes – delete all user data and press Power to select it.
    • Use the Power button to select Reboot system now.
    • When the S5 restarts it should be completely wiped and ready to set up again.

Problem #2: Straight Talk Galaxy S5 can’t receive SMS when used in Page Plus network

I recently had my number ported from a Galaxy S5 (CDMA) from StraightTalk to a different Galaxy S5 (CDMA) to Page Plus. So it is 2 separate Galaxy S5 phones, the old ST phone and the new PP Galaxy S5, which I am having issues with. I am able to make and receive phone calls but was unable to make or receive texts of any type. I went in to the access point on my phone/the new PP phone as the old ST phone is turned off/ and discovered the APN was incorrect. I contacted Page Plus and they claim all is well on their side. I did however get the settings I need, the port numbers, APN name/vzwinternet, MMC/310, MNC/012, APN type/internet + mms, and MMSC/ which is https://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms. I went in to phone but the only value I could edit was the APN, which was set as Tracfone (i can not remember the rest of the APN that was in the phone, only the words Tracfone.

Anyway, I was able to edit that to vzwinternet as instructed by Page Plus, and now I can send text messages but I still cannot receive texts. The S5 will not let me edit anything except the APN, it will not let me click on port, mmc, mms etc. The words remained grayed out but no pop up appears to let me enter the information and they all say “not set” now and before I changed the APN to the correct one given to me by PagePlus. I thought all of this information automatically went in to the proper fields when they ported my number and activated my phone.

Anyway, as stated above, all I can do is send text messages, I can not receive them. Help would be appreciated.

Perhaps if I can figure out how to edit the other fields with the correct information, all would be solved, and I was able to edit the APN without any difficulty whatsoever. I have done several resets, booted in to safe mode to clean the cache and a few other tricks, lol, that I found online. Thank you. — Laura

Solution: Hi Laura. Having incorrect APN settings will only impact the mobile data functionality of your phone and not the SMS function. Your phone needs the correct APN configuration so it can use your carrier’s cellular network to connect to the internet, as opposed to Wi-Fi.

In general, once you insert a SIM card to a GSM phone, the APN settings will be configured automatically. In a CDMA phone, a user may have to manually add some more specific values if carrier-initiated configuration won’t work properly. If you don’t have problems with mobile data connection though, APN settings must not be the cause why your phone is unable to receive SMS.

If you can send texts but not receive them, there may be other things causing it but definitely not the APN settings. Keep in mind that CDMA phones are more difficult to configure when used in another CDMA network, and some of them won’t even work at all. Some phone features and functions may not also work depending on the situation. You must work closely with Page Plus to ensure to resolve the issue. Below are some of the things that you should do:

  • Restart the phone.
  • Check if Call Barring feature is active or not. Call barring feature should not be active. If you don’t know how to check it, contact your carrier.
  • Disable airplane mode.
  • Make sure that all your sender number format is correct (optional). Refer to your carrier for the correct format if necessary. A dialed number can look like this in the United States: 1-541-754-3010. Though it’s highly unlikely that your carrier is using unique number format style, we still recommend that you ask them for direct assistance regarding this.
  • Check the Spam folder. Your messages may have been forwarded to other folders in the messaging app. Open your messaging app, go to More settings, tap Settings, and look for something that says something about spam or spam filter. If you have messages in the spam folder, this is probably the reason why you’re not receiving SMS.
  • Work with your carrier. There’s only so much that you can do to fix an issue like this. If all the items mentioned above do not work, it’s either a compatibility issue with your carrier, or there’s a misconfiguration somewhere when Page Plus reprogrammed your phone. Either way, you must work with them to resolve this issue.

Problem #3: Galaxy S5 doesn’t have network signal in the Philippines

Hi good day. I have read your blog about the S3 and I’m wondering if you could help me with my S5. My relative is from the US and bought me an S5 and shipped it here in the Philippines. The problem is that it does not have signal in it. So i assumed that it is locked but i noticed that the SIM card setting is there in the device, so meaning it is not. But still i don’t have a signal. i tried changing the preferred network but it was not clickable. i tried factory reset but still nothing happened. please help me. Thank you. — Karina

Solution: Hi Karina. Wireless carriers in the Philippines are using GSM technology so if you have a GSM S5, all you need to do is to have it network unlocked. On the other hand, if your relative sent you a CDMA phone, you may not be able to use all network features of your S5 in the Philippines. CDMA phones do have SIM card slots nowadays but they’re only added to allow the device to use LTE (4G). SMS, MMS, and voice calling requires 2G and 3G services in the Philippines so if you have a CDMA phone, your S5 is incompatible.

In general, GSM phones, as long as they are already network unlocked, can work in almost all GSM networks as long as you have a working SIM card. This is because subscriber information is stored in the SIM card itself (SIM stands for Subscriber Identification Module). Once the phone has been unlocked, any SIM card can be inserted to make it to work. In contrast, CDMA phones do not store subscriber information in a SIM card but deep in the phone’s software itself. The original carrier must first unlock it so that the second carrier can reprogram and register it on their networks. In other words, there’s some heavy lifting to be done at the software-level first, before a CDMA phone can be used in a second network.

The major CDMA networks in the USA includes Sprint, Verizon, and US Cellular. On the GSM side, the major networks include AT&T and T-Mobile. To check if you have a GSM phone, go under Settings>About device and look for the model number. If it says G900A (AT&T) or G900T(T-Mobile), you’re in luck. If it says neither of the two, use Google to search from which carrier your S5 belongs.

Assuming you have a GSM device and it’s an unlocked one, another reason why it’s not being recognized by the network is the possibility that it may be blacklisted. Get the IMEI of the device under Settings and check it’s status by going to https://www.imei.info/. If it’s blacklisted, there’s nothing that you can do about that. Otherwise, contact your carrier in the Philippines and ask for direct assistance why their network is not recognizing your phone.

Problem #4: Files on Galaxy S5 SD card showing black screens with exclamation point

Hi. I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 phone with a 64GB microSD card (San Disk brand). I’ve had the card in the phone for over a year and never had any issues with it. I currently have 27GB of data on it, which is almost entirely photos and a few videos. However, now some of my photos are gone, and instead there’s black screens with an exclamation point. I can still save new photos to the card, and those ones display correctly. I’d like to check the microSD card on my computer to see if I can access the photos that way, but I’m not sure if I should format/unmount the SD card before I remove it from my phone. If I format it before pulling out the SD card, will that risk making the problem worse? Or is it more damaging to remove it without formatting/unmounting it? Is there anything else I can do besides checking it on my computer to try to salvage the photos? Thank you! — Sealifelover5

Solution: Hi Sealifelover5. If you haven’t created a backup of your files on the SD card, we strongly suggest that you don’t reformat it. You can unmount it though. Unmounting tells the phone to stop using the SD card so you can safely remove it afterwards. Removing the SD card without unmounting can lead to problems like file corruption and some read issues.

As far as file recovery is concerned, it’s still a tricky business even today. You need a special software that can scan the storage device thoroughly for bits and pieces that may not have been overwritten yet. These special software are not readily available for average users so you must do some research and web-scouring to find companies that offer them. Sometimes, even advanced file recovery software will not yield positive result, especially if the portions of the drive that previously kept the files were already stores different data. This is why it’s important that you stop using an affected storage device, in your case the SD card, to prevent old data from being overwritten. File recovery software will work on whatever remaining data there is and may or may not give you the result you’re looking for. Do some Google research for companies that that help you, if you’re interested in having your files recovered.

Problem #5: Hotmail account keeps saying “checking incoming server settings” when set in Galaxy S5 email app

I have Galaxy S5. My problem began on or about November 28, 2016 while running G900VVRU2DPG2…(not sure what else to give you). Hotmail was not synching on my phone so I removed my Hotmail account and tried to reconnect it via MAIL app (not Outlook app or any other app). I later realized it was a MS issue as my Hotmail was not synching with my desktop Outlook. It took a whole day for my desktop outlook to sync with Hotmail again so once it did I tried to connect it on my phone again (CHECKING INCOMING SERVER SETTINGS over and over and over). No go. Then I got the latest update on 12/6/16 -6.0.1 and thought maybe that would fix the issue. Still a no go. I killed the app, took out my battery, rebooted, tried going through app, tried going through settings>accounts, settings>applications, force stop, cleared cache, tried setting up on WiFi, not on WiFi…I think that’s it. Not sure what else to try. — Laura

Solution: Hi Laura. There are two things that you can try in this case. The first one is to turn off extra security protection in your account like two-step verification or app permissions, etc. Just access your email account on your computer and head to security section to disable them. Once you’ve done that, configure your account in the email app again.

The second thing that you can do is to contact Microsoft and ask for help. There may be some issues on their end that affects your particular account and they’re the only ones who can help.

Problem #6: Galaxy S5 battery drain issue after installing Android Marshmallow

Spent more than a whole day trying different recommended steps to stop excessive battery drain and problems described by others. Keyboard became less responsive, phone would suddenly reboot, etc.

  1. Got new battery. No improvement.
  2. Cleared cache. No improvement.
  3. Installed battery monitoring app. It indicates Android causing over 60% of the battery drain.
  4. Uninstalled many apps. Performance improved… at least keyboard and browser response improved. Battery still drains too fast. From 100% to 38% in two hours.
  5. Suspects: installation of Android Marshmallow operating system which took place a couple of weeks ago. Maybe a hardware problem but have no idea what would have suddenly changed.
  6. My phone is maybe two years old and I’m not due for a new one.
  7. Spoke with Verizon representative at Costco where I bought the phone. He said there is nothing I can do about putting back the original operating system. He said I could buy a new phone.
  8. I have spent too many hours and $42 for a new battery addressing the problems.
  9. When you buy a product and the vendor makes detrimental changes to it by installing different software, I think there is a big problem.
  10. I am seeking a class action attorney to see if there is some legal remedy for a manufacturer or vendor reaching out and ruining a good product by changing its software.

Am I unreasonable in my expectations? — John

Solution: Hi John. There are number of things that can cause battery drain problem so you must invest some time to troubleshoot it if you want to get to the bottom of it. The logical flow of such troubleshooting must start with software solutions and end with hardware. As the causes of batter drain vary per device, you must be as exhaustive in your troubleshooting as possible.

Some of the common causes of this problem includes:

  • incompatible apps
  • huge number of apps and services running in the background all the time
  • screen brightness set to high all the time
  • defective battery

One of the suggested things that you can try of course, assuming that you’ve already tried all software solutions (including factory reset), is battery replacement. If battery drain issue persists even after you’ve tried another battery, there may be some other unknown hardware issues that causes the phone to “leak” power. While there’s a chance that the particular Android version you’ve installed is the cause, there’s really no way to know for sure where the trouble lies. Even Samsung technicians can’t help you with it. That’s the reason why it seems easy for them or the store to simply replace the device. Average users usually perceive the problem to be coming from the updates, especially if symptoms starts to appear right after an installation but to tell you frankly, there are tens, if not hundreds of thousands of variables that can go wrong right after an update. It’s simply not practical to even attempt to go through each of them. Again, if the usual software troubleshooting won’t help, then hardware must be to blame. And since hardware issues are just as hard to diagnose as software ones, you’re left without much choice but to opt for replacement. This is a fact of our digital life today. We know that sounds unfair to users but that’s how technology is today. If you can’t accept that fact and want to go through a legal process, that’s your choice. If you think it’s Samsung’s fault that their software is not up to par, you’re definitely within your rights to seek for legal remedy.

Problem #1: Verizon Galaxy S7 Edge keeps getting notifications in both email app and text app

I had S7 Edge I loved from AT&T. We switched to Verizon; I got their S7 Edge. I used the app that transfers everything to the new phone. Now I all of my emails show up both in my email box as well as in my text app, causing double notifications. Verizon has reset my phone, deleted and reinstalled my apps, and eventually switched out my phone. Nothing has resolved my phone issues. Please help, this is driving me nuts. If I can’t get this resolved, I may do something rash and unthinkable, move to Apple. — Jim

Solution: Hi Jim. First of all, there’s nothing specific in your problem description that will help us pinpoint the issue. Telling us that you’re getting the  copies of notifications in both email inbox and SMS app may be what you’re seeing but you should have included other details like the type of email you’re using, the name of apps involved, among other relevant stuff that you think are relevant to the issue. In other words, the pieces of information you provide here are not enough to point to something specific. The causes of an issue such as yours can range from a simple app bug, a misconfiguration of settings, to code-level issues we’re not aware of. We’re yet to hear a similar issue from non-Verizon S7 users so there’s also a chance that this is a bug due to some Verizon software. There’s really nothing much that we can tell you regarding this issue.

Secondly, the only workaround that we can recommend to you is limit the notifications you receive from certain apps. In Android Marshmallow, you can actually break down notification settings on per app basis. For example, if you don’t want to receive email notifications while allowing the rest of notifications for other apps, you can simply select “Block all.” If you want to do this, you can follow these steps:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Head to Sound & notification.
  • Scroll to the bottom and tap App notifications.
  • Toggle the Block all switch to turn on this feature

You can also enable other options such as “Treat as priority” and “Allow peeking” depending on your need.

Thirdly, as much as we would like you to be part of our vibrant Android community, it’s really your call. If you don’t find this workaround satisfying enough, you can go ahead and move to Apple.

Problem #2: Unable to complete initial setup of pre-owned Straight Talk Galaxy S7

I bought a Galaxy S7 second hand. It is a Straight Talk phone. The seller kept the SIM card. After talking to different people and finally getting one that could speak English that I could understand, I was told that I needed the SIM card that came with the phone. Straight Talk sent me a new SIM card for my phone. I have done a factory reset but cannot get past selecting English for the language. After that, the phone tries to connect to the wifi. I continually get a message that says it cannot connect to wifi. My other devices connect to wifi at home just fine, so I know it’s not a problem with the wifi. Please help. I have a lot of money tied up in this now “paperweight”. — Wanda

Solution: Hi Wanda. Since you did not specifically made it clear if you’re still in the initial setup stage, or already in normal mode (where you can do the usual stuff like send SMS, make calls, browse the web, take photos with the camera, etc.), we’re assuming that you’re still trying to set the phone up. If we’re correct, then your device may be basically having trouble connecting to your home wifi network.

Now, being unable to connect to a wifi network does not always necessarily mean that the issue lie on your new Galaxy S7. On the contrary, the reason for that may actually be on the wi-fi network itself. As an added security layer, some wi-fi administrators may setup the network to automatically block unknown or new devices from connecting. There may be a filtering system being implemented in your wi-fi network such as MAC filtering, which blocks a device from connecting if its MAC address is not recognized. If you are not the administrator of your home wi-fi (may be a tech savvy kid or husband), make sure that you let them know you’re having this trouble. If you are the only administrator of your home network though but are not quite sure if there’s any such filters enabled, try to reset all the settings of the router to default. If you don’t know how to do that, contact your internet service provider (if the router was supplied by them), or use Google how to reset your particular router make.

The main purpose of the connecting to Wi-Fi during the initial setup is to ensure that the device can download and install the latest software update, as well as validate the Google account previously registered on the phone. We’re assuming though that the original owner removed his/her Google account from the phone before selling it to you. If this was not done, you will be unable to gain access unless you can enter the Google account credentials. In that case, you must contact the original owner and let them unlock the phone first for you. Keep in mind that there’s no way you can use the phone if you can’t provide the Google account credentials of the previous owner. That means your phone just became an expensive paperweight.

Problem #3: Galaxy S7 front camera won’t work | Galaxy S7 “Warning: camera failed” error

Whenever I try to switch to selfie mode (front side camera) I get the message “Warning: camera failed.” If I shut down the camera and reopen it I get a black screen and the message again. I followed the steps in your guide and I can get the camera working again, but as soon as I switch to selfie mode it fails again. Snapchat also cannot work in selfie mode. I did uninstall and reinstall Snapchat in case that was the problem without success. — Heather

Solution: Hi Heather. There can only be two general causes to this problem — hardware malfunction or software glitch. To try to get to the root of the problem, we suggest that you do a factory reset and observe the phone for a few hours without installing any apps. If the same issue occurs after a factory reset, that’s proof that the camera is defective, thus no software trick can fix it. In this case, you must need to have the phone replaced. On the other hand, if the front-facing camera works fine after a factory reset, the cause is either an operating system glitch or a third party app. You should then install the apps one by one, making sure to check if the camera works normally after every installation. This will help you identify the culprit.

For reference, these are the steps on how to factory reset your phone:

  • Create a backup of your important files and contacts.
  • Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7.
  • Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  • When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  • Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  • Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  • The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Problem #4: Galaxy S7 sync settings won’t automatically delete email messages after copies have been deleted from laptop

I have a Galaxy S7. My previous phone was a Galaxy S5 Advantage. On the S5, in my email app, emails would download to my phone based on the sync timing I set. Whenever I cleared my emails on my laptop, all emails would download to my laptop and the next time my phone synced, all emails that had been downloaded to my laptop automatically deleted themselves from my phone. This was excellent. I can’t seem to get this to do the same thing on my S7. Any ideas? — Duncan

Solution: Hi Duncan. Every iteration of Samsung email app (assuming you’re using the stock email app) may bring changes that may no longer necessarily replicate the behavior of the older model. If your trying to setup the same email account but can’t seem to make the phone email app behave like what the older app in your S5 Advantage did, chances are the newer S7 email app may have been modified and no longer supports the behavior you’re looking for. If your email account supports both POP3 and IMAP protocols, try switching between them during the setup to see if they’ll do the sync behavior that you want. We don’t think there’s a setting under the Samsung email app that will make it do what you want so your options are limited to using either POP3 or IMAP.

Problem #5: Water-damaged Galaxy S7 battery damaged | Galaxy S7 no longer charges properly after it got wet

I accidentally left my phone out and my sprinkler directly hit the charger. I tried turning it on because of water resistance. It didn’t respond. So I tried charging it. Tell my why the phone’s battery screen flashed? NVM that, I tried the ol’ bag full of rice trick. I left it there for about 12 hours. I tried again, and I got into recovery, but with a reddish tint. Well, I tried re-installing my ROM, hoping that it was an easily fixable issue. When the ROM was installing, I unplugged my phone, instant power off. And my phone was at 100% before the install. I panicked, and knowing that I had to use my phone soon, I did probably the stupidest move ever, and put it on AN ELECTRIC HEATER. I left it there for 5 minutes, because that heater gets so hot that the air in my whole house is dry after ~30 minutes. Now it turns on, and WOULD do everything perfectly fine, if it weren’t for the battery not charging because it’s too low. PLEASE HELP!! — Zii

Solution: Hi Zii. If everything on the phone works fine except the battery, then you need to have the battery replaced. It’s really that simple. There’s no software trick or hardware trick that can reverse whatever inappropriate chemical reaction that happened to the battery when you “cooked” your phone in an electric heater. If the phone’s liquid damage indicator has not been tripped, you may still be able to get the phone replaced or repaired for free via Samsung service center or the store. If that’s no longer possible, you must invest a few hundred dollars for the repair.

Problem #6: Galaxy S7 won’t boot up normally after a failed rooting procedure

Hi there. My name is Steef and I am from the Netherlands. I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and I am currently undergoing issues because the attempt to root my device has failed. At first it looked that it succeeded because that was the message I got in Odin. But after my phone did not reboot and the error “Kernel is not seandroid enforcing” appeared.

Also the Knox counter was triggered. According to this I tried to flash the original firmware through Odin again but this failed. Now I got the message to perform a emergency recovery through Smart Switch but smart switch can not detect my device anymore. I did try to download a couple of different firmware through Odin but none of this did work. The only way I can start my phone up is in download mode.

Further the phone doesn’t do anything. I have to say I was that stupid that I did not make any backups cause my previous phone was rooted in an instance without any problems. But now the question: is there anything else I could do to bring my phone back to life? Sure hope you can be of assistance and hope to hear something soon. Many thanks — Steef

Solution: Hi Steef. Issues that results from modifying official software are best addressed by developers of software you’re using. If you can no longer turn the phone on normally after a failed rooting or flashing process, the only effective but general solution that we’re aware of includes:

  • wiping the cache partition via recovery mode
  • doing a factory reset  via recovery mode
  • unrooting the device (if the issue is directly caused by incorrect rooting process)
  • flashing a stock ROM

If you’ve already tried all of them before contacting us, we’re sorry but there’s nothing more that we can give. You must try to reach out to the developer of the software you used that caused the problem initially, or find another forum that handles rooting or flashing related concerns.

Problem #7: Galaxy S7 keeps showing ‘Screen overlay detected’ error

Hello. The built in Calendar on my phone is causing a major issue. First I get when I slide down from top for notifications: Calendar noti.now shown – To receive notifications from Calendar, tap SETTINGS, go to App info > Permissions, then allow the following permissions: Calendar. Then I click SETTINGS and try to turn on Calendar permissions to ON, but then new little window pops up stating: Screen overlay detected, To change this permission setting, you first have to turn off the screen overlay from Settings > Apps. Then I click OPEN SETTINGS, and it’s on a Draw over other apps page. I click Calendar to turn ON, which it appears to do. Then I click back to turn on Calendar permissions and the same ‘Screen overlay detected’ window pops up. I did a REBOOT SYSTEM, no avail. Please help, thanks so much in advance!

Solution: We’ve observed this issue happening on non-Samsung devices too so we’re certain it’s either an operating system related issue, or something brought about by certain apps. Usually, the issue happens when loading an app that has a “floating” functionality like what Facebook Messenger app does when it’s notification bubble shows up. Android operating system requires that apps must ask permission from the user if they want to access certain phone functionalities like the camera, internal storage, among others. We think that the “screen overlay detected” error  is interfering with the dialogue that’s supposed to popup asking for permission. In this case, turning off the screen overlay should fix the issue. To do this, you must do a series of steps.

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Go to Applications.
  • Tap Application manager.
  • Tap More.
  • Tap Apps that can appear on top.
  • You will then be presented with a list of apps. Each of the apps in the list is capable of showing pop ups, bubbles, and other elements over an active app you’re using. Make sure that you disable all of them to make sure that everything is taken care of.

Problem #1: Galaxy S7 SD card not working properly

Dear Sir/Madame, I just read the solution about “Pictures and videos saved in the micro SD card disappeared.” I have the same problem but not only with pictures and videos. I also have the problem with apps and music saved from Spotify. The micro SD isn’t the problem because it works just fine on my friend’s phone and my PC can read it. But here is the tricky part. My phone can sometimes see the micro SD and sometimes not and that’s just random. And sometimes my pc says the micro SD is broken but if I put it in my friends phone it just works fine. I don’t want to send my phone away for 3 weeks because the telecom company says so if they want to check it, so I was hoping if the solution you wrote has a possibility to work for me it would be great. Solution: Hi Luuk. There’s no point sending the phone for a hardware check right away without narrowing down the possible causes. There’s a chance that the problem lies on the SD card and not on the phone. The fact that your PC cannot reliably detect it all the time can be an indication that the SD card is defective. Because there’s no definitive way to know whether or not an SD card is defective, the most that you can do here is to observe and to try trial-and-error method.

Reformat the SD card

The first thing that you can do is to reformat the card. If you have an SD/SDHC/SDXC card (you should any of these on the card itself), we suggest that you try a special software from SD Association called SD Card Formatter 4.0. You can follow this link so you have an idea on what to do: SD Card Formatter 4.0 for SD/SDHC/SDXC.

Alternatively, you can reformat the card using your Galaxy S5 for optimum performance. Then you want to observe how things go for several days to see the difference.

Try another SD card

If you’ll continue to encounter the same problem, consider buying a new SD card. Whether for troubleshooting purposes or for simply avoiding the issue again, getting a new SD card is a great option for you. Not only will it potentially save you from further hassles but you can also use the old one as a backup of your important files in the near future. Keep in mind that once an SD card gets corrupted, there’s no way of restoring your files from it. So, to prevent losing precious moments of your digital world, keep it a habit of always creating a backup of your irreplaceable files.

Problem #2: Repaired Galaxy S7 won’t turn back on again

Hello. About a month ago my phone just went dead. Black, no blinking lights … just dead. It just suddenly shut down and wouldn’t charge back up. I spoke to a Samsung live chat online and after a bit of testing he said it was a hardware problem and told me to go to Fido and have them send it to their repair company Future Tel. It was then returned to me stating they replaced a piece of hardware. It worked fine until this weekend when I noticed it wouldn’t charge again. Once again I tried a different plug in the house, a different power bar, etc. and still nothing. It’s dead again. I hate that I cannot just take out the battery myself and put a new one in. My phone has a one year warranty and no I didn’t buy the protection package. I’m wondering what my rights are for this phone and am wondering what you think they should do to help me besides sending my phone back and forth to the tech company.

Right now it’s free but after the warranty is up…who knows what this will cost. I’m mad, I need the phone but don’t want the hassle. It was a pain from the beginning with the wifi issue also. I don’t want a Samsung S6 as I tried that before I bought the S7 and didn’t like it. My husband has an S5 without any issues. So this morning I’m off to Fido to see what they say…in the meantime I’ll probably go to Staples and buy one of those phones that accepts any carrier until I get my phone back in 3 weeks. Solution: Hi Carol. It’s always a hassle for anyone to send a phone to a service center but this is one of the many facts of life in our modern world that we have to accept. Although hardware makers like Samsung make good effort in ensuring their products can run free of defects for at least a year after unboxing, nothing has been perfect so far. Manufacturing defects, use of poor materials, and even design flaws (like the one that happened in the most recent Galaxy Note 7) can all play their part in the overall performance of products. Since you’ve already sent your S7 once and it had been repaired free of charge, that’s an acknowledgement of the fact that you received a defective device. The good thing is, product warranty provided by Samsung, carriers, or retailers should cover whatever issues your phone may have, provided that they don’t fall under product warranty exceptions. If you want to know more about your rights as a user as far as warranty is concerned, we recommend that you read the product documentation or warranty that came with the box. Some Samsung devices can also include the product warranty under phone Settings>Service Information>Warranty Information.

Samsung, wireless carriers, and retailers can offer specific product protection so the service your device will receive may vary depending where you bring the device to. In your case, it appears that your carrier taps the service of another service center, FutureTel Service Centre to fix your phone. This means that the product warranty being used to service your phone is the one being provided by your carrier. In general, there’s not much difference between the warranty bring provided by the hardware maker (Samsung) and carriers but we still recommend that you talk to Fido for specifics. Doing so will give you accurate information what to expect once the standard one-year warranty is up.

We should also emphasize that you should tell Fido that the first repair was not done well, it appears. This will force them to create a report or feedback for the previous job and can be a useful reference for any future repair.

Problem #3: Verizon Galaxy S7 can’t connect to 4G LTE on Straight Talk network

LTE stopped working! I have a Galaxy S7 through Straight Talk (Verizon). I usually use Auto Pay with my plan but after upgrading my plan to 10GB of data per month, I forgot to refill my plan the next month. After my phone lost service, I refilled my plan but my phone was stuck on 3G. Usually cycling Airplane mode on and off fixed the issue but it didn’t work. I went a month with 3G then called Straight Talk. They sent a new SIM card and i reactivated my phone, still 3G. I contacted Straight Talk after a couple weeks and after many rounds of checking, unchecking and turning my data off and on, all they could tell me was, “Our system says you ARE receiving 4G/LTE. It must be a problem with your phone.” They recommended a factory reset. So after backing up everything I performed a factory reset on my phone and…nothing… same damn problem. Plus, none of my apps work now…. So, any help from the outside would be great. — Kenny

Solution: Hi Kenny. As much as we would like to help you, your main issue regarding your Galaxy S7 no longer able to connect to 4G/LTE is best addressed by your carrier. There are a lot of factors in this issue that can only be controlled by your carrier. For example, this may be an issue regarding provisioning, a task that only your carrier’s representatives can do. As far as we know, you already did your part by doing a factory reset, which means that all software settings, including network settings, have already been reset to their known, working state. That factory reset did not change anything is a clear indication that this is not an issue on the phone. Contact your carrier and demand to speak to a higher tier of support so you can get more experienced represntatives.

As regards the secondary issue regarding apps not working, we need more information than what you’re saying. Telling us that none of your apps working at this time is very general and does not help us to isolate possible causes at all. For future reference, always provide as much information about the issue as possible whenever you’re asking for assistance. Important details like names of apps, error messages, symptoms, specific behaviors are just some of the critical things technicians like us needs. That said, there’s really nothing much that we can help you in this one.

Problem #4: Galaxy S7 has stopped charging

I have started having problems with my phone i.e. charging issues — it charges very slowly and now not at all. It holds its charge over night but when I plug in to charge it loses its charge rapidly. Now it doesn’t seem to want to charge at all and I also keep getting loads and loads of ads which I never had before. I have disabled all the apps, I have downloaded except for AVG but the ads still keep coming thick and fast. Because it was telling my phone was running slow and needed cleaning etc., I downloaded a couple of apps and the ads them came thick and fast and they interrupt me when I am texting and charging etc. As I have mentioned already I have killed all the apps that I possibly can and I have tried the soft reset but no improvement. Solution: Hi Sally. One of the common reasons why a phone loses battery power fast can be services and apps that run actively and in the background all the time. That ads keep popping up on your device is an indication that it may either be infected with an adware, a code that forcefully funs advertisements in a target device to generate revenue for another party; or that you may have installed a malicious third party app that, in turn, let adware into the system.

To fix either of these issues, we recommend that you wipe the phone clean and start from scratch. For reference, these are the steps on how to factory reset your Galaxy S7:

  • Çreate a backup of your irreplaceable files and contacts.
  • Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7.
  • Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  • When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  • Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  • Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  • The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Now, once you’ve done a factory reset, make sure that you don’t install apps right away. Observe the device for at least 24 hours to see how charging works without the apps. If everything is back to normal at this time, that’s an indication that our hunch is correct.

Also, make sure that you don’t re-install the same set of apps. Viruses, malicious software, or adware are transmitted by apps, or by visiting compromised websites. Ensure that you only install trusted and/or official apps. Hackers can sometimes load games or other types of apps with trojans that can open your phone later for the invasion of adware or viruses. Since we have no idea what apps you install, we can only give you a general advice. It’s your prerogative what apps to install back but once you notice that the issue is back, you must factory reset and identify the bad app.

Problem #5: Vodafone Galaxy S7 keeps showing “unfortunately phone has stopped” error

Hi there. Last night I got my phone unlocked from Vodafone and started using my new EE pay sim. I can send and receive texts, browse the web and make calls using my new sim card – but – I get an error message everytime I receive a call “unfortunately phone has stopped.” It completely crashes the phone, the dialogue box won’t “ok” – as soon as I press ok, it re appears on top of all other apps. I can’t back out from it and I can’t select another app behind it – and most worryingly – it won’t let me shut off my phone. I’ve done all the usual checks, the right network etc., is selected for it, and I can’t find any reason for it not to work. Could you please help me as a matter of urgency? I’m housebound disabled and my mobile phone is my only way I can make and receive calls, it’s my lifeline. Kind regards. — Dawn

Solution: Hi Dawn. The first thing that we want you to do here is wipe the cache and data of the phone app. Here are the steps:

  • Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
  • Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6.0.
  • Once in there, find the phone app and tap it.
  • You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
  • You should now clearly see the Clear Data and Clear Cache buttons for the application.

After clearing the phone app’s cache and data, you can also refresh the system cache to minimize other bugs. Here’s how:

  • Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7.
  • Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  • When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  • Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.

Problem #6: Photos taken by Galaxy S7 disappear on their own

My wife and I both have a Galaxy S7. Last I get while at a concert we each took a photo. When we went to look at our respective photos during intermission, they were not there. Tonight at another event, she took multiple photos and random ones would not be in the Gallery while most were. Any idea what could be using this? My best guess would be the Amazon Prime photos app? We use that to back up our photos to cloud and that app recently had a massive update. I would appreciate any feedback you may have. Thanks. — Mark

Solution: Hi Mark. We can’t see any reason why a third party app like Amazon’s Prime Photos app will prevent your photos from being saved, or cause images from getting deleted perhaps. We haven’t received similar reports from other users in both this blog and in other third party Android forums. That said, we say you treat the issue just like any ordinary Android issue.

The first step that you want to do is to reset the settings of your phone’s camera app (assuming you’re using the stock Samsung camera app). Follow these steps:

  • Go to the Home screen.
  • Tap camera app.
  • Go to camera settings by tapping on the gear icon.
  • Scroll down to the bottom and tap Reset settings.

Once you’ve reset the settings of your camera app, go back to its settings menu one more time and make sure that you select your preferred Storage location.

In case you’re using a third party camera app, wipe its cache and data (steps provided above) and configure it not to upload photos automatically. This will allow you to pick photos to upload to remote cloud servers manually. Then, observe how camera works again in the coming weeks. If you’ll encounter the same problem, do a factory reset.

Problem #1: Galaxy S5 Active can’t receive SMS when connected to Toyota Sienna audio system

I have a Samsung GS5 Active running Android 5.0. A few months ago we got a Toyota Sienna. I had successfully paired my phone to the car, can listen to music via Bluetooth, use the Entune Apps to listen to Pandora, make calls and texts. Occasionally even emails would pop up on the nav screen. A few weeks ago, texts stopped working. On hindsight, I do not know if this was related to an Entune App update (I think at some point I had to log in to the app again), or something with my phone itself which is occasionally glitch or slow. I can still make calls. My contacts appear to still be in the car system. I have deleted and re-installed the app on my phone. I have un-paired and re-paired to the car. but I still do not have text message alerts on the nav screen. When I go to apps, it asks if I want to set up messaging. I select yes, then a massage pops up on nav screen saying “you may need to operate your device to allow messaging access. waiting for device…..” However, nothing pops up on my phone. I know it had in the past. maybe I selected No one time? how can I get this prompt to show up on my phone again so I can get messages to work? is there a default somewhere I need to clear?

Also recently there seems to be Bluetooth connectivity issues between phone and car. WHEN using Pandora, I occasionally get pauses in music, sometimes I get a message saying I need to have the app running on my phone (which is still open and seems to be running on the phone in the notification bar) or the phone disconnects all together. — TIA

Solution: Hi Tia. Your main question on how to make messages to work again can only be answered if you do troubleshooting on your end. Our straight answer is NO. There’s no way for us to know where the issue may lie. It can be a compatibility issue, it can be an app you’ve installed, it can be your car’s audio system, it can be the operating system on your Android phone, to mention a few. You need to narrow down the possible causes by doing trial-and-error troubleshooting, which also means investing time and effort in identifying the cause. Sometimes, the basic stuff helps while in others, they can be useless. Since we are only covering one area, that is your Android device, our suggestions are focused on that device only.

If you think that the issue lies on your Galaxy S5 device, the first thing that you want to do is wipe the cache partition. This will ensure that the system cache is fresh. Here’s how:

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  • When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

To cover the possibility that you may have installed an incompatible app, you can also boot the phone in safe mode. If messaging works fine when safe mode is on, you must uninstall apps from the phone until the issue is eliminated. Otherwise, just proceed to the next logical solution. For reference, these are the steps on how to boot your S5 to safe mode:

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key.
  • When ‘Samsung Galaxy S5′ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

The next solution that you should try is more drastic. This is the last potential solution that you can try on your level. Doing a factory reset will wipe everything from the phone’s internal storage so make sure that you create a backup of your important files and contacts before you proceed. For steps on how to factory reset your device, refer to the steps below.

Now, if nothing changes after a factory reset, you must contact the car maker so they can, in turn, let the manufacturer of the audio system know about the problem.

Problem #2: Galaxy S5 won’t send or receive MMS

Hello. I have an issue with sending MMS messages and receiving them. This started happening after my phone was factory reset. I entered the proper APN settings for my MetroPCS carrier and still nothing. Here are the settings i tried:

APN: fast.metropcs.com

MMSC: https://metropcs.mmsmvno.com/mms/wapenc

MCC: 310 (default)

MNC: 260: (default)

APN Type: default

Bearer: LTE

Everything else I left as it was.

Other settings i tried:

APN:fast.t-mobile.com

MMSC: https://mms.msg.emg.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc

MCC: 310 (default)

MNC: 260: (default)

APN Type: default

Bearer: LTE

Both of these settings work for me for everything except the MMS. When i try to send it, it spins for a few minutes and then it just says failed to send. When i receive MMS the picture does not show up, i just get a download button which does not do anything and then it also say like size: 1kb. What should i do?? Everything worked fine before the factory reset. — Dawid

Solution: Hi Dawid. We don’t work for MetroPCS so we can’t confirm nor deny if the values you provide above are accurate. We know though that APN information is posted all over the web, but we still recommend that you  contact MetroPCS for the correct APN details. Doing this is important so we strongly suggest that you do it before doing anything else.

Now, MMS function mostly work when you have a working mobile data connection. If mobile data connection is working but MMS is not, the issue may be caused by something else. Make sure that you try all available messaging apps installed on your phone to see a difference. If you’ve been using the stock Samsung messaging app, try to see if you have the same type of issue when using your carrier’s messaging app or a third party one like Go SMS.

If MMS continues to fail, let MetroPCS know about it so they can help you.

Problem #3: Galaxy S5 reboots on its own when not connected to a charger

I have a Samsung S5 with a power problem.

 

  • In the morning I can’t always get the screen on. I haven’t looked into it fully. I mention it only because it may have some relation to problem no 2, which is my real issue.
  • After having been to a subtropical swimming pool, in the dry area, so I don’t think water is the issue. When I was there, the phone suddenly stopped and restarted through the Samsung logo, up to the buz, and restarts again. If an external power source is inserted, then there isn’t a problem, I can do all I want, it is stable. If I don’t have any app’s running I can take the external power source away, and all seems fine, but I can’t start an app, then it resets again.

 

I tried cleaning the contacts of the battery and the power connector with alcohol, but that didn’t do the trick. I even wiped the cache, which of course didn’t fix it. What should I do? should I buy a new battery? Help? — Otto

Solution: Hi Otto. Android troubleshooting follows a simple rule — if software troubleshooting won’t help, hardware must be to blame. This is true in majority of cases that we’ve seen and we don’t see anything that can exempt your issue from this rule. That said, we recommend that you factory reset the device. If that won’t change anything, you must submit the device for a hardware check. Since you have an S5, consider changing the battery with a good one. If that won’t help either, have the phone repaired or replaced.

For reference, these are the steps on how to factory reset you device:

  • Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  • When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  • Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  • Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  • Press the Volume Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  • After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

Problem #4: Galaxy S5 drains battery very fast | Galaxy S5 won’t charge properly

Hi, I have a strange problem that happened last night. I searched online but it seems that my issue may be unique..lol. I went to bed, plugged my phone into the regular Samsung wall plug and cord. It was great for a few minutes but then it beeped and it seemed to disconnect from the power supply. I checked the phone and there was no lightning bolt in the battery icon. I changed charging cords and still nothing. I tried plugging it into my laptop and my laptop could not discover it, even with Kies.

Another twist, lol. I found that after the phone had been plugged in for a while it will charge but the display for % of a charge will not change until I reboot..it will change downward though as the battery discharges. Finally, I did try the reboot, taking battery out, clearing cache and even did a factory reset.

Also, when the phone is powered down and I plug it in it will show the charging icon for about 30 seconds then it switches to a battery with a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it. Hope this was not to confusing, I am very frustrated. — Fastdriver_0

Solution: Hi Fastdriver_0. the first thing that you want to try here is to recalibrate the battery so you can teach the operating system how to gauge the battery level properly. To do that, follow these steps:

  • Use the phone by playing games or doing tasks to hasten power discharge, until the phone turns itself off.
  • Turn the phone on again and let it turn itself off.
  • Charge the phone without turning it back on.
  • Wait until the battery says it fully charged to 100%
  • Unplug the charger and turn the phone on.
  • If the phone says it’s not 100% anymore, turn it off, plug the charger back in and wait until 100% charge is reached.
  • Unplug the charger the turn the phone on again.
  • Use the phone until you drain the battery down to 0.
  • Repeat the cycle once.

Observe the phone again for a few hours while charging it. If it remains problematic, do a factory reset. Refer to the steps above.

You can also try to change the battery with a known working one. If battery is the only issue, replacing the existing one should give easily fix the problem.

Finally, if factory reset or a new battery won’t change anything, you can assume that the phone may have been damaged. Find a way to have it repaired or replaced.

Problem #5: Downloaded photos to Galaxy S5 have poor quality

Hello, Thanks for your forum. I am operating a Samsung Galaxy S5 and actually doing some travelling in India. I had a Vodafone SIM card put into my phone and am using my phone as a mobile hotspot to run the internet on my computer with. I am running my graphic design business from here currently so it is vital that I am able to download high quality images for the work. I am having the problem that more than 50% of the images that I see and then try to download the image quality gets damaged or downgraded almost as if I saved a JPEG on an image quality setting of ‘1’ or ‘0’. When I was in the states 100% of the images retained their original quality, fyi. Not sure what to do about this to get them back to normal. I have linked image samples below, they show the mottling of the background and the blurring of the image –>Sample 1 –>Sample 2. Solution: Hi Jonathan. The reason for the problem may have something to do with the source of the files. If you download images from social networking sites like Facebook, Google Plus, Twitter, etc., you can expect to receive poor copies of photos as these sites converts uploaded files into compressed ones, sometimes significantly degrading the quality.

Try to download photos from third party hosting websites that offer lossless compression to receive better copies of images. Imgur can provide lossless compression to any photo as long as it doesn’t go beyond their 5MB file size limit.

Problem #6: Slow mobile data connection on Galaxy S5

Goodday, i realized when i had put service onto my phone that even though the data was successful my phone was not able to connect using the data plan. and so i saw the tip about entering in the APN for the phone service you are using which i found out and adding into the phone, now it worked for like one day. it was around night time i entered it and it’s night time again now and it seems that my phones service no longer works. i checked and i didnt run out of service and now once again it isn’t working. i tried changing the network mode from Global to LTE and the other features, however still nothing. the letter above the signal bar changed from H to E and I’m still having no service. — Biggiethebear

Solution: Hi Biggiethebear. There are two possible causes for your problem here. First, is the strength of your network’s signal. If your area is far from the your network’s tower, if your house is surrounded by objects that can interfere with cellular signals like trees, tall buildings, or thick walls, you can’t expect good reception all the time. Poor signal reception translates to slow or unreliable mobile data connection, resulting to poor browsing experience on your mobile device. If you think there’s poor signal reception inside your house (as indicated by fewer cellular signal bars on the status bar), make sure that you talk to your carrier so they can help you. If you’re willing to invest in additional hardware, and if your carrier does offer it, they can install a signal boosting device in your place to improve coverage.

The second reason for the problem is the type of network in your location, or the one you have selected in your device. As you can see, changing the network type can significantly affect the speed of your data connection. For example, changing the network type from 3G/H to 2G or E is not recommended. 2G is much slower than 3G and 3G is slower than 4G or LTE. Talk to your carrier what’s the ideal network type in your area to use and make sure that you stick to it. Don’t change any network setting (or anything, really) if you are not sure what you’re doing.

Hello, and first off thanks for your help. I’ve done a lot of rummaging through your site with no luck yet. My phone seems to only charge when it’s getting a low input of power, i.e., cigarette lighter or laptop. My phone charges off the laptop fine, but the laptop doesn’t recognise it or allow me to take files off my phone. When using a powerpoint only really cheap shitty boxes charge it. My fast charging unit charges my girlfriends S7 but my s6 doesn’t even notice it’s there. Whenever i can find something to charge my phone from empty it always estimates around 6-7 hours until fully charged.

I want to factory reset but can’t clear my files first. the shop thinks it’s a loose connection and want to replace the plug, but they have let me down on a misdiagnosis before. when my phone is charging, no amount of wiggling makes it disconnect, to me ruling out the port. the port is very clean. my phone also suffers from the camera rattle that’s common but i can’t see that effecting it. Solution: Hi Chris. Diagnosing a hardware issue on a smartphone is a tricky business so the chance of misidentifying the true problem occurs from time to time. This is the reason why we almost always recommend phone replacement instead of repair.

The issue you describe above appears to be hardware in nature but we suggest that you try software troubleshooting as well to confirm it. The steps that you can do includes booting your phone in safe mode, wiping the cache partition, and factory reset. These are basic software solutions that you can do on your end. There’s really nothing much an average user can do when faced with this situation. As usual, if these procedures won’t change anything, consider having your phone replaced.

How to wipe the cache partition of Galaxy S6

This procedure is very helpful in fixing issues like random reboots, boot loop, stuck during boot up, random freezes, and sometimes, charging glitches. Here’s how you wipe the cache partition on your S6:

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  • When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

How to boot a Galaxy S6 to safe mode

Booting in diagnostic mode, also known as safe mode, is usually recommended if you suspect that an update or third party app is the reason why your smartphone behaves abnormally. Though there’s little to believe this is what’s happening in your situation, we still recommend that you do it while charging to see if it makes any difference.

  • Press and hold the Volume Down and Power keys for 20 to 30 seconds.
  • Once you see the Samsung logo, release the Power key immediately but continue pressing the Volume Down key.
  • Your phone should continue booting up and you will be prompted to unlock your phone as usual.
  • You will know if the phone successfully booted in safe mode if the text “Safe mode” is displayed at the lower-left corner of the screen.

If doing the two procedures above won’t result to anything positive, don’t hesitate to do a factory reset. This is the final step that you can do at your level before eventually submitting the phone to a replacement or repair request. Refer to the steps below.

Problem #2: Galaxy S6 not receiving all messages from iPhones

I recently upgraded from a Galaxy S3 to a Galaxy S6. I don’t regularly text with multiple people so I don’t know if my issue is happening with everyone or just the numbers of two people that I do regularly text with. Both of them are also on AT&T and both have the same iPhones they had when I had my Galaxy s3 and I never had an issue receiving all of their texts. This issue started immediately after I got the S6. As an example, the other day one of the phone numbers sent me 7 texts during the day and I only received 4 of them. They sent me a text this morning that I did not receive however when they sent me a follow up text to see if I had received their first text, I did receive their follow up text.

I have called AT&T twice about this. I have deleted and then re added both of these contact names and numbers to my contact list. The first time I spoke to AT&T they actually removed my cell phone from their network, had me turn off and on my phone and then they put me back on their network but it did not resolve the problem. The second time I called AT&T which was late last week they had me do a Force Stop on the AT&T Message App which I did. I guess doing that supposedly reboots the app. I thought the problem was fixed until I found out this morning that I had missed another text from one of the numbers that this has been happening with.

Neither of the numbers I am having issues with is blocked on my phone or is shown as being spam, plus since I do receive about 70% to 80% of their texts, it shows my phone does have the capacity to receive their texts, it just isn’t receiving all of their texts.

When I talked to the last AT&T rep she said if the text app reboot didn’t fix my problem then I should go to the AT&T store and ask for a new SIM card. Since my phone is only a little over a month old (I bought it from AT&T) though I don’t see how/why a new sim card would help.

I am at my wits end. If you know of any other things I can try to do to fix this issue please let me know. Thanks so much. — Deborah

Solution: Hi Deborah. This problem can’t be fixed by a third party like us. You must work closely with your carrier until it’s fully resolved. But just in case there may be some update or firmware glitch that’s interfering with the local messaging app you’re using, try to wipe the phone clean and observe it for a few days. This means that you must do a factory reset and observe the behavior of the messaging function. Make sure that you don’t install anything during the observation period. We suggest that you do the observation for at least 48 hours. If nothing will change, call AT&T for more direct support.

For reference, these are the steps on how to factory reset your device:

  • Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  • When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  • Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  • Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  • Press the Vol Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  • After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

Problem #3: Limit on the number of SMS that can be sent at one time on Galaxy S6

This email is to inform you that I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 phone and I would like to get more information as to how can I send more than 20 text messages at one given time manually through text messaging.

Also, I want to have to take the limitation of the number of contacts you can put in a group which is 52/1000 to 2000 client I have so I can send instant text messaging through my phone.

Can you provide me a solution with Samsung Galaxy S6 phone 2 taking out the limitation of the text messaging software issue instead of using any third party. I will also consider a good app that can take over thousands of phone numbers and save it in a group where I can send instant text messaging with numbers only. — Raheel

Solution: Hi Raheel. The limit on the number of text messages that can be sent at one time varies by carrier and app. Some carriers allow up to 100 recipients while others, like AT&T and T-Mobile, only allows 10. Some third party apps may or may not be able to stretch the limit imposed by your carrier. There’s usually no workaround this limitation because no one except your carrier can change their network policies. Still, the best party that can answer both of your questions is your carrier, not us. Make sure you redirect your queries to them.

Problem #4: Straight Talk Galaxy S6 Marshmallow update causing multiple problems

Who ‘pushes’ out the updates to the OS, Samsung, the network carrier? On or about 5/26 my GS6 (purchased from Walmart and using the Straight Talk network) received an update to v6.0.1. That evening I let it install, put it on the shelf by my bed, and went to sleep. The next day it appeared the new version loaded okay, until later in the day; major issues started with:

1) heating up to where I couldn’t hold in my hand;

2) internet connection very intermittent;

3) texting also very intermittent and once in a great while you could actually attach a picture and it would send ok;

4) calling was ‘hit and miss’ with I called. Sometimes able to hear me, I could always hear them.

Tried getting help from Samsung but was told that they had no reports of this kind of problem happening. Apparently I was the first and only person it happened to. Tried working with Straight Talk support who temporarily fixed the texting with attachments issue and that worked for a short while but they couldn’t help me with other issues; so contacted Walmart because I also bought a 2 year replacement plan when I bought the phone last year but they couldn’t help because the 1 yr manufacturer’s warranty hadn’t expired yet. They might be able to help now that the warranty has; BUT, I am curious as to WHO pushed out the update, the manufacturer or the network carrier? — Ed

Solution: Hi Ed. Walmart is the physical store where you get the phone but the carrier or network operator should be Straight Talk. Straight Talk is a network operator in partnership with TracFone and Walmart. The software update being pushed to your phone should come from Straight Talk so if you have problems after installing an update from them, you must ask support from them. The best that Walmart can do is to offer a phone replacement but if Straight Talk’s software is at fault, you may still encounter the same problem even on a new phone.

Before you contact Straight Talk for resolution, be sure to wipe the cache partition and to factory reset the device. Sometimes, post-update issues can be fixed by doing any, or both of these procedures.

Problem #5: Galaxy S6 screen keeps flickering after it got wet

I dropped my phone in the bathtub last night, and the screen keeps flickering. I turned it off overnight, and wrapped it in paper towels, and stood it upright.

This morning I turned my phone on, and everything seemed fine.

Except for one thing:

The screen keeps glitching and turning white, black, green, and back to normal. (I’m actually using my phone to type this up right now, however the screen does glitch.)

All the other buttons are fine. The sound works great, calling is good, it vibrates, plays videos, takes picture. All in all its fine.

Except for the screen.

Please help! My dad is gonna kill me. — Alyssa

Solution: Hi Alyssa. Frankly, the best thing that you can do right now is to turn off the phone and have it checked by a professional. If this screen issue was not there before the phone got wet, you must have a hardware malfunction going on. Because a Galaxy S6 is not water-resistant, there’s also a high likelihood of other components developing hardware problems at this time. There’s nothing that you can do on your end to fix a hardware issue, unless you want to risk opening the phone yourself and diagnosing the issue. Our blog does not provide hardware troubleshooting so if you are really intent on doing hardware diagnosis, try to look for other online resources.

Problem #1: Galaxy S5 sound is low when using a headset

I bought a new Galaxy S5 for Verizon a few days. When I turned it on, it connected to Google and Wifi. The updates began, and when I tried to listen using my wired headphones post the updates, the sound was low even when Media volume is highest. There is static and cracking noises (only when using the wired headphones, tried several different ones, no issue with the speaker when the headphones are out).

When I listen to a high quality mp3 using the headphones, the sound is very “thin” – i.e., no bass, the singer’s voice is barely audible, and you only hear the arrangement – as if some frequencies are absent.

Also, when I change the volume up and down a Google Voice recognition pops up expecting some action, even though I explicitly turned it off “OK Google” detection in Settings.

When I cleared the defaults, changing the volume up and down at times pops up the box below with: “Do you want to open with Google App or S Voice”? As if the microphone is reacting to the audio when the headphones are in, which is very strange. I disabled all the Motions and Gestures in Settings.

I tried the following to fix this problem without any success:

1) Cleared the cache partition

2) Removed and inserted back the SD card, battery, restarted the phone many times

3) Did a factory reset (it rolled back some updates, but not Android 6.0.1.)

4) Disabled/enabled Google app, re-installed YouTube and other key apps

5) Started in the Safe mode – same issue persists.

Perhaps something is wrong with the phone jack (I tried inserting the headphones better, cleaning it with air, etc., but I still suspect a software issue of some kind, based on how it works).

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! — Leonard

Solution: Hi Leonard. An audio problem like this can only be fixed if proper isolation is done first. We suspect that the problem is not software-related since you’ve already tried to do a factory reset. While Android system updates can sometimes lead to problems, they don’t normally affect how a hardware works because their drivers remain unchanged. In fact, we haven’t had any case documented before demonstrating that a headphone jack stops working properly after a system update.

If the problem does not occur when inserting the same headset to another device, you can rule out a headset issue. Headphone jacks can sometimes go bad, even on other electronics so the best thing that you can do right now is ask for replacement phone from your carrier.

Problem #2: Galaxy S5 loses Wi-Fi internet connection after an update

Hi. I did the system update through the phone as it downloaded automatically through wi-fi at work. Since then I have had no internet connection at all.

I have tried a soft reboot. Did the reboot deleting the cache.

Still no network connection. Network is definitely on when I turn off wi-fi.

Also went to the SIM card provider, Lebara.es, who sold me sim card in January and they can’t see anything wrong and it says I have internet credit. The setup is correct and they tried a new connection. This has all happened since the update. Connects to wifi fine! just no internet whatsoever. I am going to try another SIM in the phone tonight after work but am at a loss. Last option is a full system reboot to factory settings I believe so am backing up everything today while I am on wifi at work.

I am hoping you will come up with something so I don’t have to do that. Data network is definitely active. I’ve tried taking battery out as well as turning on and off multiple times.

Solution: Hi Toni. There are only two things that we recommend if you encounter problems right after updating Android — wiping the cache partition and performing a factory reset. Assuming there’s no hardware problem involved, like a malfunctioning Wi-Fi radio, a factory reset should help you bring back Wi-Fi connectivity.

Problem #3: Galaxy S5 won’t connect to StraightTalk mobile data

I bought a Samsung Galaxy S5 used and bought an accompanying “bring your own phone” package. Everything set up fine and I used it for several months without issue. Recently there was a software update available which I started. There was a problem and the phone ended up getting turned off. The update was then failed and the phone would then only show me the screen saying that the update had failed and I needed to run the Verizon Software Upgrade Assistant (the repair portion) to repair the phone and finish the update.

After a few failed attempts, the repair assistant finally worked overnight while I was sleeping. The phone was usable again. It sent and received texts and calls and hooked up to wi-fi fine but will not connect to the internet via data.

When I go to look at the APN it shows VZWINTERNET and only that one. Doesn’t give me the option to add others either. (plus sign is gray and unclickable).

So I tried having StraightTalk update my APN and data settings but it shows up as an incompatible SIM, even though it is absolutely the same StraightTalk SIM I’ve had and was working.

Did the repair assistant mess up my SIM? Is there any way to fix it or do I now need a new SIM? Thank you in advance for your consideration. — Scott

Solution: Hi Scott. Verizon phones are notorious for giving problems to users if used on different networks. We can’t be sure if the Verizon update is responsible for the present issue so you have to talk to StraightTalk support for guidance.

Trying another SIM card is definitely a must in order to isolate the problem. If the second SIM fails, that’s a confirmation that some settings may have changed that prevents the phone from connecting to StraigtTalk’s services. Because we don’t know the full history of your phone, we can only speculate. You must work closely with your carrier to get this issue resolved.

Problem #4: Galaxy S5 screen keeps flickering if phone is not connected to charger

After I uninstalled those two apps (Game of War and Clash of Clans. Installed them to get free stuff and then un-installed then phone started freaking out), I was recording a video on the camera. It suddenly shut off and then started flickering to the black start up galaxy screen off and on. It shows the galaxy screen and vibrates once like its starting up and then starts over doing it over and over but never fully turns on. 

I pulled the battery twice letting it sit for about 20 seconds and when i turned it back on it starting flickering again. I plugged it in even though I knew there was about 35% battery life and it started up and was working fine but only while charging. I went to bed and let it charge. When I got up this morning, as soon as I pulled it off the charger it started doing it again. It continues to flicker back on that screen every time if I don’t keep it on the charger. I did clear the cache but that didn’t help. Please help.  — Stevie

Solution: Hi Stevie. If the only you did prior to noticing the problem was to install the said apps, the best thing that you can do right now is to do a factory reset. Doing so will erase any glitch that may have developed after the installation. Here are the steps:

  • Power down the Galaxy S5.
  • Press and hold the Volume up button, the Home button, and the Power button together until you see the Android on screen.
  • Use Volume down to highlight the wipe data/factory reset option and press the Power button to select it.
  • Use Volume down again to highlight Yes – delete all user data and press Power to select it.
  • Use the Power button to select Reboot system now.
  • When the S5 restarts it should be completely wiped and ready to set up again.

Problem #5: Calls sound muffled using a Galaxy S5

Hello. I’m desperate. Found your site on Google. Didn’t see my problem so I’m writing hoping you still are active with site.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S5. Not sure if Android version is Lollipop. It doesn’t say.

Anyway I just turned phone in, because no one can hear me and when they do they say I’m “muffled” or sound like I’m in a “washing machine.”

Most times I have “2 bars” for my phone. When I received “new” phone, I still have “2 bars” most times. Does not matter where I am. I could be in middle of town where a tower is visible.

Anyway, my girlfriend has an iPhone and she can walk through out my house with no problems, like she is on a landline. I’m ready to either try another phone brand or phone company. Do you have any suggestions?

One more thing. When I talk on the phone, the phone at time puts my volume on “vibrate,” or my “settings” menu pops up. And if I text or hang up on call most times it will call person back. I’m at my wits end with this. Thanks for any help you can offer. — Dennis

Solution: Hi Dennis. The first thing that you want to do is check if the call problem you’re having is due to a bad microphone. To do that, try to record your voice using the phone and listen to it. If the audio is bad and sounds like the line is full of static, that’s an indication that you have a  hardware problem. The only solution is to ask for a replacement device from your carrier or Samsung.

If the microphone works fine though, consider doing some basic software troubleshooting. The first one that you can try is wiping the phone’s cache partition. This troubleshooting step is usually recommended if you have updated a device to another operating system version or if the phone is having some weird glitches. Despite not having installed the full set of new operating system files, we suggest the you do the following steps to erase possibly corrupted cache on your device:

  • Turn the phone off.
  • Press and hold the following buttons together: Power, Volume Up and Home.
  • Release the buttons once the Android system recovery menu appears.
  • Use the Volume buttons to navigate to Wipe Cache Partition option.
  • Press the Power button to confirm selection.
  • Select Reboot System Now option after deleting the cache. Wait for the phone to reboot.

You can also try booting the phone in safe mode to see if a third party application is the problem. While in this mode, your phone is put in a diagnostic state, allowing only first party apps to run. This is mostly performed if a user suspects that a third party app may be messing with the operating system, or if the phone suffers from performance issues. If your calls work just fine while in safe mode, that’s a confirmation that one of the apps you installed is the root of the problem. Just follow these steps:

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key.
  • When ‘Samsung Galaxy S5′ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

If nothing changes after doing these procedures, do not hesitate to do a factory reset.
