How to fix Bixby not working on Galaxy S10 | Bixby has stopped error

If you’re looking for a solution after noticing that Bixby is not working on your Galaxy S10, this post might help. Follow our suggestions below.

Bixby not working fix #1: Restart device

If you find that Bixby is not working on your Galaxy S10, the first step that you want to do is to restart the phone. This is usually effective in fixing all sorts of issues due to minor bugs. What you want to do is called soft reset. This is basically a restart with the aim of clearing the system by simulating the effects of a battery pull. To do that, simply press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons for about 10 seconds. Once the phone has restarted, release the buttons. This is usually effective in clearing bugs that developed when a system is left running for some time. We suggest that you restart your Galaxy S10 using this method at least once a week to lessen the chances of bugs.

For some Galaxy S10, there may be a slightly different way to arrive at the same method. Here’s how:

  1. Press and hold the Power + Volume Down buttons for approximately 10 seconds or until the device power cycles. Allow several seconds for the Maintenance Boot Mode screen to appear.
  2. From the Maintenance Boot Mode screen, select Normal Boot. You can use the volume buttons to cycle through the available options and the lower left button (below the volume)

Bixby not working fix #2: Install updates

Bixby and its associated services are all part of Samsung firmware or operating system. Like any other app or software, some problems with it can be caused by poor or inefficient coding. From time to time, this happens as there are countless moving parts in an Android OS. what developers like Samsung can do is to minimize the chances of issues and fixing known bugs. The fixes often comes as part of regular updates. If you’ve been holding off app and OS updates at this point, now is the time that you install them.

Bixby not working fix #3: Restart Bixby Service

If Bixby is not working all of a sudden, that may be caused by a minor bug. Such type of bugs usually develop if a system has run for a long time, or if the app has been constantly up. To see if the problem can be fixed easily, you can try to restart it.

Here’s how it’s done:

  1. On your screen, tap the Recent Apps soft key (the one with three vertical lines on the left of the Home button).
  2. Once the Recent Apps screen is shown, swipe left or right to look for the Instagram app. It should be here if you managed to run it previously. Then, swipe up on the app to close it. This should force close it. If it’s not there, simply tap the Close All app to also restart all apps.

Another way to force close an app is this:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap the More settings icon (three-dot icon, upper right).
  4. Tap Show system apps.
  5. Find and tap the Bixby Service app.
  6. Tap Force Stop.

We recommend that you do the second option as Bixby Service often runs in the background and may not appear among the list of active running apps.

Bixby not working fix #4: Clear Bixby Service cache

If Bixby has stopped working for no apparent reason, you should consider troubleshooting the main app itself. You can do that by clearing the cache of Bixby Service app. Follow these steps on how to do that:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap the More settings icon (three-dot icon, upper right).
  4. Tap Show system apps.
  5. Find and tap the Bixby Service app.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear cache button.

Bixby not working fix #5: Reset Bixby Service

Another way to deal with a Bixby Service app problem is by resetting all its settings to defaults. This is done by clearing its data. Follow these steps to do that:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap the More settings icon (three-dot icon, upper right).
  4. Tap Show system apps.
  5. Find and tap the Bixby Service app.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear data button.

Bixby not working fix #6: Run device on Safe Mode

Did Bixby stop working after you installed a new app? If yes, then you may have a bad third party app problem at hand. Consider deleting that app and see if that will help. If you can’t be sure if the new app is to blame, try to run the phone to safe mode to check. In this mode, all third party apps won’t be allowed to run so if Bixby works normally, you can assume a third party app is to blame.

To boot your S10 to safe mode:

  1. Press and hold the Power button until the Power off window appears then release.
  2. Touch and hold Power off until the Safe mode prompt appears then release.
  3. To confirm, tap Safe mode.
  4. The process may take up to 30 seconds to complete.
  5. Upon reboot, “Safe mode” appears in the lower-left of the home screen.

Remember that third-party applications are disabled in this mode so what you can use are pre-installed apps. If Bixby works fine on safe mode, that means that the problem is due to a bad app. Uninstall the app you recently installed and see if that will fix it. If the problem remains, use the process of elimination to identify the rogue app. Here’s how:

  1. Boot to safe mode.
  2. Check for the problem.
  3. Once you’ve confirmed that a third party app is to blame, you can start uninstalling apps individually. We suggest that you begin with the most recent ones you added.
  4. After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem.
  5. If your S10 is still problematic, repeat steps 1-4.

Bixby not working fix #7: Refresh system cache

An Android device may encounter performance problems or may become erratic in some aspects if its system cache is corrupted. This happens sometimes after an update. If Bixby not working issue occured right after a system update, the system cache may need refreshing. 3. While still holding the Volume Up and Bixby keys, press and hold the Power button.
  4. The Recovery screen menu will now appear. When you see this, release the buttons.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘yes’ is highlighted and press the Power button.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Bixby not working fix #8: Log out of Samsung account

Some Galaxy S users in the past were able to fix some Bixby bugs by deleting and re-adding their Samsung account. We don’t know if this effective for Bixby cases on the S10 but it’s worth mentioning. Removing and re-adding a Samsung account only takes a few minutes so it’s not that hard to do. You also don’t need to do anything else as this won’t delete your data. All you have to do is put in your username and password and wait until the device syncs your phone with your Samsung cloud copy.

To remove a Samsung account:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Accounts and backup.
  3. Tap Accounts.
  4. Select your Samsung account.

  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap on More settings at the upper right (three-dot icon).
  4. Select Reset app preferences.
  5. Restart your S10 and check for the problem.

Once you successfully access Recovery, that’s the time that you begin proper master reset procedure. It may take some tries for you before you can access Recovery so be patient and simply try again.

  1. If possible, create a backup of your personal data ahead of time. If your problem prevents you from doing that, then simply skip this step.
  2. Also, you want to make sure that you remove your Google account. If your problem prevents you from doing that, then simply skip this step.
  3. Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
  4. Press and hold the Volume Up button and the Bixby button at the same time.
  5. While still holding the Volume Up and Bixby keys, press and hold the Power button.
  6. The Recovery screen menu will now appear. When you see this, release the buttons.
  7. Use the Volume Down button until you are highlighting ‘Wipe data/factory reset.’
  8. Press the Power button to select ‘Wipe data/factory reset.’
  9. Use Volume Down to highlight Yes.
  10. Press the Power button to confirm factory reset.

Bixby not working fix #11: Repair button may be bad

Although we haven’t actually received any report about Bixby going bad due to malfunctioning Bixby button, it’s worth mentioning that this can still happen. Is there any chance that the Bixby button on the side (below the Volume rocker) has been damaged? This can potentially occur if the device has been dropped or hit by something hard. If you think there’s an obvious hardware damage on the phone, we suggest that you let Samsung take a look. Visit your local Samsung store or Service Center so the phone can be examined by a professional.
