OnePlus Joins the Wireless Power Consortium; Will the OnePlus 8 Have Wireless Charging?

While OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has not been in favor of the existing fast charging technologies, a new hint has popped up suggesting that the company may use the feature sometime in the near future. Naturally, this has led to speculation that the upcoming OnePlus 8 flagship will come with wireless charging. A new listing has revealed that OnePlus has officially joined the Wireless Power Consortium or WPC which is a group of companies that jointly work on wireless charging and related technologies.

It’s worth noting that Chinese manufacturer Oppo also signed up with the WPC a few days ago, so it was only a matter of time before OnePlus joined the fray. For those unaware, OnePlus is a subsidiary of Oppo, which is owned by BBK Electronics. BBK also owns fellow Chinese manufacturer Vivo.

As for wireless charging on the new OnePlus flagship, it’s too soon to tell despite the company joining the WPC. It’s more likely that OnePlus will debut this feature with its late 2020 flagship (the OnePlus 8T perhaps?) as the OnePlus 8 is already expected to be in its late stages of development.

OnePlus has long been pushing wired fast charging tech on its smartphones. One of the primary reasons that the company has stayed away from wireless charging is due to its slow speed in comparison to its proprietary Warp Charge technology. But given that we’ve seen several surprises in the market already, some are hoping to see wireless charging on the OnePlus 8. Other rumors have suggested that wireless charging will remain limited to the OnePlus 8 Pro.

Will you miss wireless charging if you have a fast wired charging adapter like the Warp Charger? Let us know.
