What to do if your Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus starts to run slow (easy steps)

When a powerful smartphone like the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus starts running slow after just a few weeks of months of use, it’s most likely just a minor issue with the firmware. Samsung has a habit to roll out minor firmware updates shortly after the release of its flagships to address issues reported by new owners. If your phone starts to run slow after any of these updates, then it’s apparent the problem is with the firmware and based on our experience, suck problem can be fixed by simply replacing old system caches.

In this post, I will walk you through in fixing your Galaxy S9+ that starts to run very slowly for some reason. So, if you’re one of the owners of this device and are currently bugged by a similar problem, continue reading as this article may be able to help you one way or another.

The first thing we have to do about this problem is to know if it has something to do with apps your installed and then we’ll progress into troubleshooting the firmware. With that said, here’s what you need to do…

Run your phone in Safe mode and observe

Rebooting your Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus in safe mode will let you know if one or some of the apps you downloaded and installed is causing the problem. Assuming it’s the case, your phone should run normally while in safe mode because while in this environment, all third-party apps are temporarily disabled. Now, here’s how you reboot your phone in safe mode:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  3. When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

The next thing you should do if your phone is working perfectly in this mode is to find out which of your apps is causing the problem and uninstall it.

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap the desired application in the default list.
  4. To display preinstalled apps, tap Menu > Show system apps.
  5. Tap UNINSTALL > OK.

However, if the phone is still slow while in safe mode, then the next method may help you.

Wipe cache partition

Assuming the phone is still running so slow while in safe mode, this is the next thing you should do–delete all system caches. It’s possible some of the caches got corrupted and resulted to a poor performance issue. Therefore, you will need to delete those caches so that they will be replaced with new ones. However, you don’t have access to individual caches but even if you do, you won’t know which of them is corrupt and obsolete. So, the best thing to do is to deleted them all at once. The phone will also replace them all during the first boot sequence after wiping the cache partition.

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  4. An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Your Galaxy S9+ will take a little more time booting up as it rebuilds the caches so wait for it to become active and then continue your observation. If the problem still occurs, you will really need to reset your phone.

Backup your files and data and do the Master Reset

A reset will always fix any performance related issues provided the firmware hasn’t been modified in any way. That’s what you have to do at this point but before that, make sure you make a backup of your personal files and data as they will be deleted during the process. After which, remove your google account from  your phone so that you won’t be locked out. Once everything is set and ready for your Galaxy S9 Plus, follow these steps to make your phone run faster again:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.
