What to do if Gmail keeps crashing on your Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (easy steps)

Your Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has two email clients that are already installed on it. The default is the app called Email and the second one is Gmail, which, of course, only lets you access your Gmail messages. The former will let you set up different accounts like Microsoft Exchange and other email services. I will walk you through in troubleshooting your Samsung Galaxy Note 8 that has this kind of problem. I will share with you the solution we’ve been using to fix many of similar issues we’ve encountered in the past. In fact, this isn’t the first time I tackled this problem so I already know a thing or two that will fix it. How to fix your Galaxy Note 8 with Gmail that keeps crashing

Based on my own personal experience, a Gmail app that keeps crashing is a minor problem. But I’ve encountered cases wherein the error message “Unfortunately, Gmail has stopped” was just one of the symptoms of a serious firmware issue. Gmail is deeply embedded in the firmware so if there’s an issue with the system, it could be one of the apps that may crash. If the firmware got modified or if the owners rooted it and installed a custom ROM, things like this may also happen but assuming that this problem started without apparent reason, here’s what I suggest you do about it.

Reboot your phone – before you do anything, make sure you take a little time rebooting your Galaxy Note 8 especially if this is the first time you encounter the problem because it’s very much possible that it’s just a glitch in the system. Glitches happen all the time regardless of the model or how powerful your phone is. Most of the time, those glitches can actually be fixed by a reboot. If a normal reboot fails, try doing the Forced Reboot by pressing and hold the Volume Down and Power keys together for 10 seconds or more. It’s more effective than the former but if the problem continues after this, then move on to the next procedure.

Find out if it’s caused by a third-party app – third-party applications or those that you manually download from the Play Store and install on your phone may cause performance issues from time to time and this could be one of those cases. To find out if that’s really the case, you have to start your phone up in safe mode to temporarily disable all third-party apps. If Gmail doesn’t crash in safe mode, it means that there really is a third-party app that’s causing it. Find out which app it is and uninstall it. However, if the app still crashes even in safe mode, then move on to the next procedure.

Delete all system caches so they’ll be replaced – if Gmail crashes even in safe mode, it’s possible that the cause of the problem is some corrupted or obsolete system caches. This problem may happen after the firmware is updated and while caches are naturally small files, they can also cause trouble if they get corrupted. You don’t have access to individual system cache let alone delete them individually but you can actually wipe off contents of the cache partition to delete them all at once. Once deleted, the firmware will create new files to replace them and if the problem is indeed due to some corrupt files, this procedure can fix the problem.

Reset your Galaxy Note 8 – after wiping the cache partition and the problem is still happening, you have no other choice but to reset your phone. A reset will bring it back to its factory settings and fix the app issue however, make sure you make a backup of your important files and data before the reset as they will be deleted. A reset can fix any app-related problem that’s why I’m confident enough that this issue can fixed by this method provided the firmware of your phone hasn’t been modified in any way.

How to start Galaxy Note 8 in Safe Mode

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  3. When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

How to uninstall apps from your phone

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap the desired application in the default list.
  4. To display preinstalled apps, tap Menu > Show system apps.
  5. Tap UNINSTALL > OK.

How to Wipe cache partition

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  4. An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

How to do the Master Reset

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.
