After several months of waiting, the U.S. variant of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 with model number GT-N8013 finally gets and Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean (UEUCMA3) update, which can be pulled down over-the-air (OTA) or via the Samsung KIES. For owners who may not be able to update their device using the conventional method, there is a manual way to do it.
Using a flashing tool called “Odin” owners can now flash the official UEUCMA Jelly Bean update into their Galaxy Note 10.1 GT-N8013. All they have to do is to download the official firmware, save it to their computer and follow the step-by-step tutorial below. But before that, there are a few reminders owners should look into.
Reminders/Pre-Requisites
- There is always a chance that your data will be corrupted during the process, so, it is recommended you backup all important data including your SMS messages, files, videos, music, etc. You can do it manually or use apps to do it.
- Once the flashing starts, it shouldn’t be interrupted because there is a chance you brick your device. It is, therefore, advisable to make sure your device has at least 80% battery left.
- Enable USB Debugging and install necessary drivers for your device. This is necessary to make your tablet detectable by your computer.
- Bear in mind that this tutorial makes use of the official UEUCMA3 Jelly Bean firmware, after flashing, you will lose root access and all custom ROMs and mods will be uninstalled. You can root your device and install custom ROMs after the flashing.
Step-by-step Tutorial
Step 1: Download and extract these files in your computer: Android 4.1.2 JB package and Odin application. You will need to extract the former so you can find the ‘.tar.md5’ file later and the Odin package contains the executable application.
Step 2: Run Odin application as Administrator and turn off your Galaxy Note 10.1 Wi-Fi.
Step 3: Boot your device into the Download Mode: to do so, you need to press and hold VOLUME DOWN and HOME buttons while tapping on the POWER button until Samsung logo appears on the screen.
Step 4: When your device is already in the Download Mode, connect it to your computer using the original USB cable that came with it when you purchase the tablet. If all necessary drivers were installed, one of ID:COM boxes will turn yellow while displaying the COM port number the tablet is using to communicate with your machine. Otherwise, this step will be time-consuming and you cannot continue unless the device is properly detected by the computer.
Step 5: In the ‘Option’ section on Odin UI, check Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time options.
Step 6: Click on PIT button and browse through the directory where you’ve extracted contents of the official ROM and look for .pit file. If you can find one, you need to check Re-Partition option under ‘Option’ section.
Step 7: Click on PDA button and look for ‘.tar.md5’ file or the one that has ‘CODE’ in its filename.
Step 8: Click on PHONE button and find a file with ‘modem’ in its name.
Step 9: Click CSC button and look for a file with ‘csc’ in its name.
Step 10: You can now click on the START button to begin the flashing process. It may take a few minutes to complete so you’ve got to wait until your device gets rebooted automatically. Wait for Samsung logo to appear on the screen before you disconnect your device from your computer and use it.
To check if the process was successful, head to Settings => About device and verify if your tablet is now running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.
