Troubleshooting Galaxy S9 that reboots when opening an app

This will be just a short troubleshooting guide as we will take the short yet effective route to fix this problem. We’ve actually received feedbacks from our readers so we already know what works and what not. For this problem, here’s what you should do:

First solution: Clear cache and data of the app

This is the app you use when the phone reboots because, as I said earlier, it could be the app that’s causing the problem. Clearing its cache and data will reset it back to its default settings and configuration. If it’s indeed just a problem with the app, then this is the only thing you need to do.

Clearing cache or data from an app can fix some software problems. If you clear data, any data stored in that app is lost, such as settings, login information, and saved games. If you don’t want to clear the data, try just clearing cache first. If you still experience problems, then clear data too.

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap the desired application in the default list.
  4. To display preinstalled apps, tap Menu > Show system apps.
  5. Tap Storage > CLEAR CACHE > CLEAR DATA > DELETE.

After this, try to open the app you’re having problems to know if the the problem is fixed. If not, then I suggest you uninstall the app if it’s a third-party but if it’s a pre-installed application, then move on to the next procedure.

Here’s how you uninstall an app from your Galaxy S9:

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap the desired application in the default list.
  4. To display preinstalled apps, tap Menu > Show system apps.
  5. Tap UNINSTALL > OK.

Continue testing your phone as it’s possible that the problem is caused by more than one application.

Second solution: Wipe cache partition

You need to do this procedure if the problem also occurs while you phone is in safe mode. We are now troubleshooting the firmware but don’t worry, this procedure won’t delete your personal files, pictures, videos, music, etc. Only the system cache will be deleted and replaced…

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  4. An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

After this, open as many apps as you like to test if the problem is fixed. If the reboots don’t occur, continue using your phone but be observant enough to see if the problem has really been fixed. However, if the issue continues, then move on to the next solution.

Third solution: Master Reset

This is your last resort and while it’s a very effective solution to almost all firmware and app-related issues, you may lose some of your files and data. So, before you do this, make sure to backup those that you don’t want to lose as you may not be able to retrieve them after the reset. Make sure that you also know the Google ID and password you use in your phone as you will be needing it after the reset to setup your phone.

  1. Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Samsung account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Samsung credentials to finish the master reset.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
