How to fix Galaxy S9 Plus with “Netflix has stopped” error

I personally encountered this problem and don’t worry because it’s pretty easy to fix. Rest assured that Netflix, being an app that offers paid subscriptions, is well-developed and well-maintained. Besides, even if the app crashes, it doesn’t necessarily mean the problem is with it; it could be an issue with the firmware. Here’s what you should do about this problem…

First solution: Reboot your phone

A simple reboot may be able to fix this problem especially if it just started showing the error. The firmware glitches from time to time and app crashes are among the most common signs. However, they’re temporary and the most effective solution is the reboot. So, try restarting your Galaxy S9 Plus to see if Netflix would still crash after that and if so, try doing the Forced Reboot instead:

  • Press and hold the volume down and power keys together for 10 second or more.

This procedure will simulate battery disconnect which refreshes your device’s memory by reloading all services, apps and core functions. If the error still shows up after this, then you have to move on to the next step as the problem could be with the app only.

Second solution: Clear the cache and data of Netflix

Doing this will reset the app back to its default settings and configuration. If this problem is with the app only, then this method is more than enough to make Netflix work flawlessly again. Here’s the instructions on how to do this:

  1. From a Home screen, touch and swipe up or down to display all apps.
  2. From a Home screen, navigate: Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap App Manager.
  4. Locate then tap Netflix.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Tap CLEAR CACHE.
  7. Tap Cached data.
  8. Tap CLEAR.

After doing this, reboot your phone to refresh its memory and then open the app to see if it still shows up the error or still crashes and if the problem remains, then it’s time to move on to making sure it’s not about compatibility.

Third solution: Uninstall Netflix and then reinstall it

Netflix is compatible with almost all Android devices especially phones with latest version of Android but there are times when this problem is actually due to a compatibility issue. For instance, the phone has recently been updated to a new firmware but the app isn’t, the latter may crash because of that. While developers often roll out updates for their apps when new firmware are rolled out, it’s better to uninstall the app and reinstall it rather than just update it. Now, here’s how you uninstall Netflix from your phone:

  1. From a Home screen, touch and swipe up or down to display all apps.
  2. From a Home screen, navigate: Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap App Manager.
  4. Locate then tap Netflix.
  5. Tap UNINSTALL.
  6. Review the notification then tap OK to confirm.
  7. Reboot your phone to refresh it’s memory and other connections.

Now, to make sure you have the latest version of the app in your phone, download a fresh copy from the Play Store and install it.

  1. From a Home screen, touch and swipe up or down to display all apps.
  2. Tap Play Store.
  3. Type ‘netflix’ in the search box.
  4. Select Netflix then tap Install.
  5. To continue, review the required app permissions then tap Accept.

The first three solutions should be enough to fix a minor problem like this. However, if by any chance the issue continues to bug you and you badly need to use the app, then a reset would be worth it.

Fourth solution: Master Reset

A reset is the ultimate solution to any app-related issue but we’re always hesitant to suggest it because it often takes time to backup your files and data. At this point though, it seems that you’ve ran out of options so if you think a reset would be worth it, then go ahead and backup your files and data and then reset your phone.

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.
