Samsung has completely reshaped the mobile industry in its own way, churning out amazing smartphone year after year (with some exceptions). The latest of the company’s foray is in the mid-ranged segment in the form of the Galaxy A series. The company recently announced three new smartphones in the lineup with each packing their own distinctive edge, although the most recent of them, the Galaxy A80 is certainly the most powerful of the lot. So what are some of the key differences between the three smartphones, Samsung Galaxy A50 vs A70 vs A80? We have a detailed look at this comparison review.

1) Galaxy A50

Features

The Galaxy A50 is the entry level model in the lineup, and as you would expect, it doesn’t pack flagship level hardware on board. While it does look like a premium offering, the back panel here is made of plastic, which is kind of a give away about its status in the mobile industry. But barring that, you can expect some stellar hardware on board here.

Starting off with the 6.3-inch 2340 x 1080 Super AMOLED display, Samsung has ensured that there’s little distinction between the company’s high end and budget ranged offerings. However, the display resolution leaves plenty to be desired, especially with the large screen real estate on the Galaxy A50.

Samsung is using the Exynos 9610 octa-core chipset here, which is pretty efficient thanks to the 10nm manufacturing process. The smartphone also comes with 4GB of RAM accompanied by 64GB of internal storage which can be expanded by up to 1TB.

Samsung is using its iconic triple camera layout on the back here which consists of 25MP, 8MP, and 5MP sensors. The front houses a massive 25MP selfie camera in the form of a notch at the center. With Android 9.0 Pie running by default, users can expect to get the next major Android update when it is made available.

The Galaxy A50 packs a mammoth 4,000 mAh battery, ensuring that the device doesn’t give up on you halfway through the day. The phone uses a USB Type C port and also packs a 3.5mm headphone jack, something which is a rarity among modern day smartphones. The phone also supports 15W fast charging and Samsung is kind enough to offer a fast charger with the smartphone.

What’s also exciting about the smartphone is the fact that it comes with an under display fingerprint scanner, something that seemed a distant reality a couple of years ago. This allows Samsung to use the entirety of the display and cut down on unnecessary bezels, thus keeping the phone relatively compact despite the large display.

Pricing

Samsung has been wise enough to price this smartphone wisely, and you can find it on Amazon. The retailer offers the smartphone in White, Black, and Blue variants, with the Coral variant not listed yet. It’s a relatively new smartphone and meant mostly for European and Asian markets.

This is also the dual SIM variant of the Galaxy A50, giving you enough freedom to choose the carrier you please. You may also wait to check out the phone when Samsung officially brings the phone to the U.S. in a few days from now.

2) Galaxy A70

Features

As you would expect, the Galaxy A70 is a slightly better version of the A50 and comes with a few key changes. First and foremost, the display here is significantly bigger at 6.7-inches. Samsung, however, retains the Super AMOLED panel and bumps the resolution slightly at 2400 x 1080 to make up for the added screen size. Despite this adjustment, the pixel density of the Galaxy A70 is marginally worse than the Galaxy A50, although it’s going to be hard to distinguish, even side by side.

Samsung also makes a significant improvement in the camera department, offering the same triple camera layout but with an upgraded 32MP sensor accompanying the same 8MP and 5MP sensors. The front comes with the same notch design as the Galaxy A50, which is primarily for the camera sensor, a slightly upgraded 32MP unit.

Samsung is using the 11nm Snapdragon 675 octa-core chipset with the Galaxy A70, promising power packed performance as well as efficiency. Speaking of efficiency, the 4,500 mAh battery unit does its job as you would expect, giving the phone substantially long usage and standby times. The company provides a 25W fast charger along with the product, pushing the envelope for fast charging tech even further.

Just like the A50, Samsung uses an under display fingerprint scanner here, allowing users to make optimum use of the gorgeous 6.7-inch display. The 3.5mm headphone jack is also present here, along with the standard reversible USB C port. The smartphone is available with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage (up to 1TB), giving you enough flexibility with regards to storage. Android 9.0 Pie is running by default here and is aided by Samsung’s One UI. All things considered, the Galaxy A70 is certainly one of the best mid-rangers in the market today.

Pricing

No U.S. carrier has announced availability for the Galaxy A70 yet, with information only provided on the Galaxy A50, A20 and the A10e. However, Amazon is currently listing this power packed handset. Color options include Black, White, and Blue. The smartphone is factory unlocked and appears to be the single SIM variant. This is the international variant of the handset, however, so be sure to check on warranty information before buying the device.

3) Galaxy A80

Features

This is the most recent launch by Samsung, which means it’s not readily available for purchase just yet. However, the hardware does look promising and is pretty much on par with high-end offerings that frequent the market every year. The company has put in quite a lot of technology into this device, which is evident with the kind of mechanics at play here. But more on that later.

Starting off with the display, the Galaxy A80 comes with the same 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display from the Galaxy A70, even maintaining the same resolution. The phone also comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage. Surprisingly, there’s no microSD card slot here, so 128GB is all you will get.

In the CPU department, Samsung is opting for the octa-core Snapdragon 730, which is made using the 7nm manufacturing process. It goes without saying that the Galaxy A80 is one of the few devices to feature this chipset.

The battery capacity at 3,700 mAh is slightly disappointing, although the company retains the 25W fast charging capabilities, allowing your phone to be juiced up faster than usual. Samsung has paid much attention to the onboard speakers as well, thanks to Dolby Atmos optimizations. It’s pretty clear that Samsung is touting this as a media powerhouse, and rightly so.

Now for the main highlight of the Galaxy A80 – the camera. As you have probably seen from the images, the Galaxy A80 doesn’t have a front camera attached. Instead, it uses a motorized mechanism to turn the rear camera towards the user for selfies.

This tech has been used on multiple smartphones before, although it appears to be a first for Samsung. There’s a unique triple camera arrangement here, which involves a 48MP sensor, an 8MP sensor, and an f/1.2 TOF 3D camera. This third unique sensor here gauges the depth of subjects and hence offers amazing bokeh photos with the smartphone.

It’s mostly software trickery, but Samsung is making sure that it’s well reinforced on the hardware front as well. There’s an under-display fingerprint scanner here as well, which remains consistent with all three A series smartphones. Samsung will offer the smartphone in Angel Gold, Ghost White, and Phantom Black.

Pricing

This is an area of relative uncertainty at this point as Samsung only unveiled the device in May. Although it’s still early days, Amazon is yet to list the Galaxy A80 on its site.

Conclusion

Although it may seem simple to determine the winner here, it’s slightly more complicated than that. The Galaxy A50 is hands down one of the best budget handsets available right now, and the same can be said about the Galaxy A70.

However, by offering the Galaxy A80 with pretty much the same features, and removing the microSD card slot, the choice between the three is definitely tougher. The Galaxy A70 is definitely an attractive proposition thanks to the hardware it packs underneath.

There’s also the factor of availability, with only two of three handsets available in the marketplace right now. So even if you love the Galaxy A80 and its features, it seems like you will have to wait. The next best thing? Well, the Galaxy A70, of course. As of right now, the price difference between the Galaxy A50 and the Galaxy A70 is not much, which makes the Galaxy A70 an easy choice for most customers.
