Some new Nintendo Switch users may not be familiar with how to redeem a download code on the eShop. The good thing is, the process is straightforward and not that complicated at all. You simply have to open the Nintendo eShop and enter the code. 

You can also use Nintendo’s website to redeem a code if your Switch is not readily available at the moment. This guide will show you how to do these two methods.

What is a Nintendo download code?

If you are new to Nintendo systems, you may have come across a download code. It is a code used to get games or contents that you can find in the Nintendo eShop. You’ll need to enter the code in your Nintendo Switch or Nintendo website to get the content in your system. 

For example, if you prefer to get digital games instead of physical versions, you can use a download code. 

Some physical games may include download codes when you buy them. These download codes are usually found on a receipt or card.

Things you need to redeem a Nintendo eShop download code

There are two important things that you must have in order to redeem a download code on Nitntendo eShop:

  • internet connection, and
  • a Nintendo account.

Make sure that you’re logged in to your Nintendo account in your Switch before you attempt to use a download code.

When redeeming a download code, an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is not necessary. Nintendo Switch Online is only needed when you play online with your friends.

As long as you have a valid Nintendo account, you should be able to use a download code.

How to redeem a download code on Nintendo Switch eShop?

Follow the steps below to use a download code on Nintendo Switch eShop.

  1. Go to the Nintendo Home screen.

  4. Select Enter Code on the left side of the screen.

  7. Wait for the download to finish.

If you are trying to extract a download code from a retailer card, you may find two sets of numbers: a Control Number and a Download Code. Make sure that you enter the Download Code and not the Control Number. The latter usually starts with an S and has hyphens. Instead, look for the number that starts with a B. That’s the download code.

If you are away from your system, you can still use your download code by visiting Nintendo’s online code redeem site. You can use a computer or smartphone to go to the website and enter the 16-digit download code.
