Huawei plans to let hundreds of US employees go, report says

It looks like Huawei is getting ready to layoff hundreds of its US employees, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal.

Most of these employee’s don’t work for Huawei directly, but are involved in Research and Development subsidiary, called Futurewei Technologies. Huawei has multiple locations throughout the US, which employee US workers, as well as temporary foreign workers.

Foreign workers aren’t necessarily getting laid off — Huawei is giving them the option of returning to China, where they can then be reassigned to another position within Huawei.

Workers in the United States, however, are already receiving letters of termination. Some US workers are still awaiting a decision from Huawei, according to The Wall Street Journal.

While not outright stated, it’s hard to believe that this round of layoffs isn’t due to ban that the US placed on Huawei. Parts of that ban will be lifted — at least that’s what President Trump says — however, if these layoffs are any indication, it doesn’t seem that Huawei expects things to go completely back to normal.
