How to Search Yahoo Mail by Size and Sort Messages to Free Up Space Easily

Yahoo Mail recently added storage limits for free accounts, making it more important than ever to manage large emails and attachments. Luckily, the New Yahoo Mail interface makes sorting by email size a breeze, no advanced tricks needed.

Here’s how you can quickly find and delete space-hogging emails using the built-in sort and filter tools.

Start With the “All” Tab in Your Inbox

If you’re not already in the New Yahoo Mail view, you’ll need to switch over. The features below only work in the updated interface. Once you’re in:

  1. Go to the “All” Tab
This tab shows messages across all folders (except Spam and Trash).
  2. Click the Preferences (Filter) Icon
It looks like a funnel or a search filter and appears near the top right of your inbox.
  3. Sort by “Largest First”
From the drop-down next to “Sort by,” select Largest first.
This instantly rearranges your inbox to display emails from largest to smallest, helpful for spotting emails with huge attachments or bulky media files. Tip: The size includes both the email and any attachments, so it’s a good indicator of storage impact.

Optional: Add Extra Filters for Even Faster Cleanup

Once you’re sorting by size, you can layer additional filters to focus on certain types of emails.

  • Unread or Read – Depending on whether you want to clean up old unread mail or processed read mail.
  • Starred – Avoid deleting flagged important messages.
  • Calendar invite – These are usually small but easy to skip.
  • Has attachment – Perfect for finding the biggest culprits behind space usage.
  • Has image – Helps pinpoint emails with embedded or attached photos.

Can I Search by Exact Size in Yahoo Mail?

Currently, Yahoo Mail does not offer a way to search emails by exact size in MB or KB like some other platforms (e.g., Gmail’s larger:5M command). You must rely on the “Largest first” sort and visual inspection for cleanup.

Still, with the sort feature, you can accomplish the same goal without needing advanced search terms.

What to Do With Large Emails You Find

Once you’ve sorted and located the largest emails, here are a few practical cleanup options:

1. Delete Old or Unneeded Emails

Especially those with huge attachments you’ve already saved elsewhere.

2. Download Attachments Before Deleting

If you’re deleting emails with important documents or photos, save the attachments to your computer or cloud storage first.

3. Archive Instead of Delete

If you’re unsure about permanently deleting, move them to a different folder or archive. It won’t reduce storage, but helps stay organized.

4. Use External Storage Tools

Save attachments to Dropbox, Google Drive, or OneDrive before deleting emails. Yahoo Mail integrates with some cloud storage platforms.

Bonus Tip: Clear Out the “Sent” Folder Too

People often forget that the Sent folder contains copies of all attachments you’ve emailed to others. These can add up quickly!

Repeat the same “Largest first” sort in your Sent folder and clear out any large files that are no longer needed.

Managing Storage in Yahoo Mail: A Bigger Picture

With Yahoo’s free tier now capped at 1 TB (and no longer unlimited), it’s wise to check your usage occasionally.

Unfortunately, Yahoo doesn’t offer a detailed breakdown of storage per folder or attachment type. But using the sort by size tool gives you the best approximation, and lets you focus on what matters most.

If you’re consistently running out of room, you might consider:

  • Upgrading to Yahoo Mail Plus for more space and features.
  • Using a third-party email client that lets you bulk-download or sync attachments for offline backup.

Final Thoughts

While Yahoo Mail doesn’t allow precise size-based searches using keywords or commands, the built-in “Largest first” sort option makes it surprisingly simple to identify and clean up bulky emails.

Just remember:

  • Use the All tab for a global view.
  • Layer on filters like “Has attachment” or “Has image” for better results.
  • Don’t forget about the Sent folder and archived folders.

Clearing out a few big emails can make a big dent in your storage, and keep your inbox running smoothly.

  1. Would love to see screenshots on how you did this. I don’t see a preferences option or a way to do this on both the iOS and Android apps for Yahoo Mail as well as through the browser.

  2. By “New Yahoo Mail” View, do you mean you need to upgrade to Yahoo Plus? I don’t see the ‘funnel’ and option to sort by size. Thanks.
