How To Fix Samsung Galaxy S9 Stopped Showing New Text Messages
Problem: the messaging app of my 2 month old Samsung galaxy s9 has stopped showing new messages that I have sent and received for 3 conversations for the past few days. I still get the messages and they still show in my notifications, but the don’t show up on the app. I can also still send messages but it doesn’t show that it has sent in any way; I know this because I texted one of them through there and their reply popped up as a notification on my screen saying that they did get the text. I’ve already tried restarting the phone, clearing the cache and data of the app in my settings, and I’ve tried turning off he phone, removing the sim card to check for marks or misplacement, and putting it back in. Thank you for your help.
Solution: Before troubleshooting this issue it is always best to make sure that your phone is running on the latest software version. If a software update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.
Turn on the App icon badges of the text messaging app
The first thing you will need to do is to make sure that the notification setting of the text messaging app is properly set.
- From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen.
- Tap Messages
- If prompted to change the default SMS app, tap YES to confirm.
- Tap the Menu icon
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap the Messages switch to turn on
- Tap App icon badges to turn on
Do a soft reset
There are instances when this problem can be fixed by simply restarting the phone as it will refresh the phone software.
- Press and hold the Power+Volume down buttons until the device powers off (approx. 10 seconds).
- Once the Maintenance Boot Mode screen appears select Normal Boot. Use the volume buttons to cycle through the available options and the lower left button (below the volume buttons) to select.
Clear the cache and data of the text messaging app
There are instances when this issue can be caused by corrupt temporary data within the messaging app. The best way to fix this then is to clear the cache and data of the text messaging app.
- From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen.
- Go to Settings then Apps.
- Make sure that All apps is selected (upper-left).
- Locate then select the text messaging app.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap CLEAR CACHE.
- From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen.
- Go to Settings – Device maintenance – Storage.
- Tap CLEAN NOW.
Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode
Sometimes an app you downloaded can cause this issue. To check if this is the case you will need to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode. If the issue does not occur in this mode then you will have to find out what app is causing the problem then uninstall it.
- Press and hold the Power button until the Power off prompt appears then release.
- Touch and hold Power off until the Safe mode prompt appears then release.
- To confirm, tap Safe mode.
Backup your phone data then do a factory reset
One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. This will revert your phone back to it original factory condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this procedure.
- From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
- Tap Settings > Cloud and accounts > Backup and restore.
- Tap the following sliders to desired setting: Back up my data, Automatic restore.
- Tap the Back key (bottom right) until you reach the main Settings menu.
- Tap General Management > Reset > Factory data reset.
- Scroll to the bottom of the screen, then tap RESET > DELETE ALL.
- If you have screen lock turned on, enter your credentials.
- If prompted to verify your Samsung account, enter the password, then tap CONFIRM.
- Wait for the device to finish the reset sequence.
