How To Fix Samsung Galaxy S9+ Speaker Sound Stopped Working

Problem: Hello, I got a pretty weird issue with my Galaxy S9+. Since yesterday, speaker sound stopped working. Notification sounds do work fine, but watching a video, playing music, don’t work, however, speaker sounds work flawlessly while in a phone call active in speaker, all sounds work from the speaker without any issues, only during the active phone call in speakerphone. Earpiece doesn’t work at all, making a phone call and placing it in my ear won’t turn off the display at all, it’s very strange. Once I hang up a call, all sounds from the bottom speaker stop immediately, I really don’t know why. Tried fully factory reset twice, including wiping cache data, no luck, I figure it’s gotta be a software issue (since hardware works only in a call), but not sure what happened. downloaded an app to measure sensors, light sensor properly registers LUX, so not sure why screen doesn’t go off when I make a call and raise it to my ear. Water did spill to the phone, but its water resistant. Still, water damage would kill the hardware, but not sure how bottom speaker works for notifications, and for other things only while on a speaker phone call.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this device it is best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

Listed below are the recommended troubleshooting steps that you need to do for this particular issue.

Perform a Soft Reset

The first thing that you will need to do in this particular case is a soft reset. This will usually fix issues caused by minor software glitches as it will refresh the phone software.

  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down key for up to 45 seconds.
  • Wait as the device restarts.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Check if the issue occurs  in Safe Mode

Another factor that can cause this problem is an app you downloaded to the device. To check if this is the case you will need to start the phone in Safe Mode since only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the phone off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  • When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

In case the issue does not occur in this mode then it’s likely that the problem is caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

The phone system cached data is used to speed up the access to your phone apps. Sometimes this data can get corrupted which results in issues occurring on the device. To check if a corrupted cached data is causing the problem you will need to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight “wipe cache partition.”
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step you should consider is a factory reset. This will revert your phone back to its original factory condition. Take note that this will erase your phone data so make sure to create a backup copy before proceeding.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the issue still occurs after performing a reset then this is most likely caused by a faulty hardware component already. The best thing to do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
