How to fix Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus with Youtube app that keeps crashing (easy steps)

There are two common signs you may encounter if an app crashes on your Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus or any Android smartphone for that matter; you may either get an error or the app closes immediately after it’s opened. In this post, I will tackle a similar problem but the app in question is Youtube, one of apps mandated by Google to be present in every Android device. We need to address the problem because many of our readers have been complaining about it.

Aside from the signs I mentioned above, another symptom of an app crash, in the case of Youtube, is when the video your watching just turned black for no apparent reason and your phone may stop responding for a few seconds. How to fix Youtube that keeps crashing on Galaxy S9 Plus

First off, if you did modify the firmware of your phone and then this problem started, you might want to check if you did everything correct. If you flashed a custom ROM, make sure you installed or flashed ‘gapps’ correctly. At the end of the day, if the problem continues, you might want to flash the stock firmware back to fix this problem.

Now, if this problem started without apparent reason or cause, then I suggest you follow the solutions below…

First solution: Reboot your Galaxy S9 Plus

There are times when apps crash due to some minor issues with the firmware. You can fix them by rebooting your phone as it refreshes the memory. Therefore, the first thing you should do is to restart your device and see if the problem gets fixed. After the restart, open Youtube to know if it still crashes. You may also try doing the Forced Reboot by pressing and holding the volume down and power keys together for 10 seconds or more. Aside from the fact that it refreshes your phone’s memory, it also reloads all apps, services and core functions so if the problem is indeed just due to some minor issues with the firmware or apps, then this method will fix it. However, if Youtube continues to crash after this, then move on to the next solution.

Second solution: Run phone in Safe mode

Starting your S9 Plus in safe mode alone won’t fix the problem but it will give you a hint what the cause is. While in this environment, all third-party applications are temporarily disabled so if one of them is causing the problem, then Youtube won’t crash. Here’s how you boot your phone in safe mode:

Turn the device off.
Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

Continue using your phone in this mode and if the problem is fixed or doesn’t occur anymore, find out which app is causing it and uninstall it.

From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
Tap Settings > Apps.
Tap the desired application in the default list.
To display preinstalled apps, tap Menu > Show system apps.
Tap UNINSTALL > OK.

Determining what app is causing the problem is often a challenge to many users. So, you must uninstall apps that you recently installed first or those that you installed prior to the problem. However, if the issue continues even in this mode, then move on to the next solution.

Third solution: Reset Youtube

By reset I mean to clear the app’s cache and data. This will bring the app back to its default settings or configuration so if the problem is just limited to the app, then this procedure will fix it. You won’t lose any of your files by doing this and it’s also safe for your data:

From a Home screen, touch and swipe up or down to display all apps.
From a Home screen, navigate: Settings > Apps.
Tap App Manager.
Locate then tap Youtube.
Tap Storage.
Tap CLEAR CACHE.
Tap Cached data.
Tap CLEAR.
Reboot your phone to refresh its memory.

After doing this and the app still crashes, then it’s possible that the problem is with the firmware and try doing the next solutions.

Fourth solution: Wipe cache partition

This method deletes all the temporary files created by the system which could have been corrupted for some reason. You don’t have access to each cache that’s why you have to delete all of them at once and this is how you do that:

Turn off the device.
Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
Press Power key to select.
Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the app still crashes after this, then you will have to do the Master Reset to fix it because clearly now, it’s a firmware issue although it’s still a minor one.

Fifth solution: Perform the Master Reset

If this is just a problem with the app or firmware, then a reset will fix it. However, make sure you make a backup of your important files and data as they will be deleted. After which, follow these steps to to reset your S9 Plus:

Turn off the device.
Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
Press Power button to select.
Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
Press the Power key to restart the device.
