How To Fix Samsung Galaxy S9+ Not Receiving Text Messages From Premium Numbers After Software Update

Problem: I have a Galaxy Samsung S9+ which has suddenly stopped receiving SMS from certain contacts. Specifically when I need a verification code of some sort (Microsoft, SimpliSafe, etc), I provide my phone number but nothing comes through. I’m also not receiving local city alerts (weather, traffic, etc.) Everything was working fine I believe, until the device went through a software update about a week ago. I don’t know if that is causing the issue, as I’ve just discovered it, but assuming it is playing some part. The phone is running Android 8 and the Security patch level dated 9/1/2018. The phone is unlocked and my carrier is Net10. I did contact Net10 and they were able to get an SMS to me and advise the phone is fully provisioned. I’m just at a loss as to why I’m not receiving SMS from other the other sites listed above. I’m trying to avoid having to do a factory reset and would appreciate any guidance/assistance you would be willing to provide. Thank you in advance.

Solution:

Turn premium SMS permissions on

The first thing that you will need to do in this particular case is to make sure that the text message you are sending to these premium numbers are indeed being sent out. If they aren’t then you will need to turn on the premium sms permission of the phone as it could be turned off.

  • From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen.
  • Navigate to Settings then Apps.
  • Ensure All apps is selected
  • Tap the Menu icon
  • Tap Special access.
  • Tap Use Premium text message services then select the Always Allow option.

Clear the cache and data of the text messaging app from the application manager

Sometimes this problem can be caused by issues within the messaging app. This app could have some corrupt temporary data that is causing the problem. To check if this is the case you will need to clear the cache and data of the text messaging app.

  • From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen.
  • Go to Settings then Apps.
  • Ensure All apps is selected
  • Locate the text messaging app
  • Tap Storage.
  • Tap CLEAR CACHE.

Once the above step is done proceed with clearing all cached data.

  • From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen.
  • Navigate to Settings then Device maintenance then Storage.
  • Tap CLEAN NOW.

Check if you might have blocked messages set on your phone

If you have blocked certain numbers from sending you a message then you won’t be able to see these text messages on your text messaging app. What you should do right now is to unblock these numbers.

  • From the Home screen, tap the Messages icon.
  • Tap Menu then Settings then Block numbers and messages then Block numbers.
  • Tap the minus sign next to the number you want to remove.
  • When finished, tap the back arrow.

Check if the problem is caused by an app you downloaded

Sometimes there are downloaded apps that can cause this particular problem. To check if this is the case you should start the phone in Safe Mode. When the phone is running in this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run.

  • Press and hold the Power button until the Power off prompt appears then release.
  • Tap and hold Power off until the Safe mode prompt appears then release.
  • To confirm, tap Safe mode. This may take up to 30 seconds to complete.

If the problem does not occur in this mode then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode

Your phone software has the tendency to accumulate temporary system data which can get corrupt. When this data is present in the phone it could cause issues to occur on the device. To make sure that this is not what is causing the problem you should wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  • An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  • Press Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Backup your phone data then do a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step that you need to do is a factory reset. Since this will revert your phone back to its original factory condition then it is a must that you backup your phone data before performing this procedure.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.
