How to fix Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge that won’t respond & with screen that remains black

Glitches happen all the time. They are sometimes caused by apps, the hardware or the firmware itself. But the thing about them is that they’re not really that serious. In fact, in many cases, they disappear as quickly as they occur.

In this post, I will address one problem that’s probably just a glitch with the new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. Our reader, Sam, said that his phone stopped responding without apparent reason. He just left it on the table with sufficient battery overnight and in the morning, the screen remained black no matter he did. The funny thing is his phone number could still receive a call but his device remained dead.

So you can understand better what really happened, here’s Sam’s actual email message…

I put phone on side table before going to sleep. The battery was showing 81% at that time. When I woke up, the phone was not displaying anything, I tried to press power button, front base button, vol keys but no reaction to any action. I then called from other phone to mine, the call was going through but it was neither ringing nor showing up any display light. I bought it just 2 months back having loyalty of using Samsung but utterly disappointed. Please advise remedy to it. Regards, Sam.”

Troubleshooting

The purpose of troubleshooting is to know what the problem is. Once you have all necessary information about the problem, you would have an idea how it happened, what caused it and how to fix it. In this problem, the first thing that you should do is to verify if the phone is still capable of responding.

Step 1: Charge the phone

I understand that Sam said the phone had 81% battery when he left it lying on the table. Even if it did come down half of the power left, there would still be enough battery to power the phone up. The purpose of this step, however, is not to charge the phone per se but to see if it would respond if it could sense the current being pushed into its battery.

Normally, the Galaxy S6 Edge will display the charging icon and that the LED indicator will glow red (or green if it’s already fully-charged). If, at least, one of these charging signs show, then the phone is still responding, somehow, and the cause of the glitch may be just a rogue app or something. Otherwise, it’s totally frozen.

Step 2: Force reboot your phone

Unlike the previous models, the Galaxy S6 Edge doesn’t have a removable battery. So, you cannot pull the battery out to turn it off. However, Samsung provided one way to force reboot its new flagship. Just press and hold the Power key and the Volume down button together for 7 seconds or more.

If the phone simply froze, then the force reboot will fix the problem. However, if there was a more serious problem and the device won’t respond to it, then there’s not much you can do about it but send it in for checkup or wait until the battery is all drained and attempt to charge it.

To drain the battery quicker, try calling your phone number from a different phone. You may have to spend hours just to get the battery completely drained without the guarantee of a resolution but if you really want to know more about the problem, then it’s worth it. For those who really don’t have the patience to troubleshoot this problem, then send the phone in for repair.

What if the phone reboots but freezes again?Ā

At least, you made it respond by pressing the power and the volume down keys. That’s a good sign that the problem can easily be fixed. In this case, the next thing you do is try to boot it in safe modeā€¦

  1. Turn off your Galaxy S6 Edge.
  2. Press and hold the Power key.
  3. When ‘Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge’ appears, immediately release the Power key and then press and hold the Volume Down button.
  4. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the phone finishes the restart.
  5. When you see Safe Mode on the lower left corner of the screen, release the button.

All third-party apps are temporarily disabled if you booted your phone in safe mode, so if it didn’t freeze in that state, it means there’s an app that’s causing the problem. Find it and uninstall it. However, if the problem happened even in safe mode, then backup all your data and perform hard reset.

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  3. When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  4. Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  6. Press the Vol Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  7. After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone
