How To Fix Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Wireless Charging Not Working

Problem: Wireless Fast charging not working. Has worked before. Tries soft reset, reset settings, cleared cache, case/no case, two different fast chargers brand new. Fast cable charging works fine. Last thing to try is a factory reset although I’m reluctant to do that. Last resort. Had phone for over a year now so no warranty. Only issue was about 3 weeks ago my son was using my phone and let it die at 0%. I could not get it to charge for nothing. I read online I could plug into charger and put on wireless charging and it gave it enough power to charge. Been fine since. Then got new fast wireless chargers and now fast charging doesn’t work. Help. I have a Note 9.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this phone it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then download and install it first.

There are several conditions that must be met in order for your phone to successfully charge using the wireless charger.

  • When using the wireless charger, do not place foreign materials, such as metal objects, magnets, and magnetic stripe cards, between the device and the wireless charger. If you have a phone case installed then I suggest that you try removing this first.
  • Do not place cards such as RFID card, credit card, Door lock card between device and back cover. The device may not charge properly or may overheat and may cause damage the device.
  • If you use the wireless charger in areas with weak network signals, you may lose network reception.
  • Be careful not to let foreign objects such as metal objects, magnets, and magnetic stripe cards, into the charger connector. It may cause overheating due to corrosion or temporary short-circuit of power terminal.
  • If you charge the device while the multipurpose jack is wet, the device may be damaged. Thoroughly dry the multipurpose jack before charging the device.
  • Use only Samsung-approved chargers, batteries, and cables. Charge-related products affect a direct impact on the safety of the user, so be careful when selecting the product.

You will also need to eliminate the possibility of the problem being caused by the wireless charger itself by using a different wireless charger with a different charging cord and wall charger.

In case the issue still persists then proceed with the additional troubleshooting steps listed below.

Perform a soft reset

One of the first troubleshooting step that you will need to do is a soft reset. This will refresh the phone software and usually fixes minor software glitches.

  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down key for up to 45 seconds.
  • Wait as the device restarts.

Once the phone starts try to check if the phone can charge wirelessly.

Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode

There are instances when an app you downloaded on your phone can cause issues. To check if a third party app is causing this problem you will have to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  • When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

If the issue does not occur in this mode then the problem could be caused by one of the apps you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

Your phone will store cached data of apps in a dedicated partition in its internal storage. This data helps apps open faster making for a better mobile experience. There are however instances when this cached data can become corrupted and can cause issues with the device. To check if this is what’s causing the problem you should wipe the cache partition of the phone.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step to consider if the above steps fails to fix the problem is a factory reset. This will revert the phone back to its original factory condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this step.

  • Make sure that the phone is off.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.
  • Once the phone has fully started do not install any apps in your phone yet. Try to check first if the battery drains quickly.

In case the issue still occurs after performing the steps listed above then this could already be caused by a faulty hardware component, possibly the battery. The best thing to do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
