How To Fix Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Unstable Mobile Data Connection

Problem: Hi, I have a note 9. Its with sprint. For a number of weeks I have had connectivity issues and gone over your articles. I’ve done all the steps you’ve described. Everything from a soft reset to a factory reset. Wipe cache partition, booted in safe mode, ran it with no third party apps, updated PRL, reset network settings, removed sim and reinserted it, etc. No one with sprint has been able to successfully help me with my issue and after remotely accessing my phone and pulling debug information from the phone they determined my house was the issue. It wasn’t and I told them this because my issue happens everywhere. Nonetheless, they sent me their magic box and I set it up. Still, the problem persists. Here’s the issue: I have an absolutely horrible unstable MOBILE connection. Complete blackouts at times. I run speedcheck and 1 minute it will be 90 mbps download and the next 0.00 mbps to 1.2mbps (or insert any super low mbps here). Ping is all over the place from 100ms to 499 ms. I will be kicked from live games, streaming stops, video calls end, etc. During this time I can sometimes still send text messages and call people. 1 time I tried to call my carrier sprint through *2 and wound up getting VERIZON! I don’t have VoLTE I have turned that feature off as well and also only have LTE/CDMA selected as mobile connectivity. Please help with this issue. I just want a stable mobile connection and the last resort is sending it in to the “technicians” with sprint at a service center and I already know they are going to tell me to pay a 250 dollar deductible for a refurbished phone. Oh and my wife also has this very same issue the same as I at the same exact times at the same locations. I feel like it’s my network sprint, but it has been MONTHS! MONTHS I SAY! I feel like sprint would have resolved this bug by now if it was. Any feedback helps here! Thank you so much!

Solution: Before performing any of the troubleshooting steps listed below it’s important to make sure that your phone is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

There are several factors that can cause this particular problem. We will isolate each of these factors to pinpoint the main cause of the problem.

Check if the signal is strong in your area

The first thing you will need to do is to make sure that you have a strong mobile data signal, preferably an LTE signal, in your area. If you have another mobile device with you under the Sprint network try to check if it is also having the same issue. You can also bring your phone to a location where the signal strength is strong then check if the issue still occurs.

Try swapping SIM cards

The next step is to check if the SIM card that you are using is causing the problem. Remove the SIM card from your phone then insert another SIM. Check if the same issue occurs. You can also place your SIM card in another mobile device then check if the mobile data connection is still unstable.

Make sure the phone is using the correct APN settings

The APN setting is responsible for connecting the phone to your carrier’s mobile data network. If your phone has the wrong setting then you might experience issues connecting to the network.

To access the APN setting of your phone

  • From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  • Tap Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Access Point Names.

The Sprint APN settings are as follows

  • APN Name: Sprint
  • APN: cinet.spcs
  • Proxy: blank
  • Port:
  • Username: blank
  • Password: blank
  • Server: Not set
  • MMSC: blank
  • MMS Proxy: 68.28.31.7
  • MMS Port: blank
  • MCC: 234
  • MNC: 15
  • Authentication Type:
  • APN Type: default
  • APN Protocol: IPv4
  • APN Roaming Protocol:
  • Bearer:
  • MVNO Type:

Reset the network connections

Performing this step will reset all data connections back to their default factory conditions. Take note that you might have to setup the APN settings of the phone again.

The changes that will occur on the device when you perform this step are as follows.

  • Stored Wi-Fi networks will be deleted.
  • Paired Bluetooth devices will be deleted.
  • Background data sync settings will be turned on.
  • Data restrictive settings in applications that were manually turned on/off by the customer will be reset to the default setting.
  • Network selection mode will be set to automatic.

To reset the network connection

  • From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  • Tap Settings > General Management > Reset > Reset network settings.
  • Tap RESET SETTINGS.
  • If you have set up a PIN, enter it.
  • Tap RESET SETTINGS. Once complete, a confirmation window will appear.

Start the phone in Safe Mode

There are cases when a certain app you downloaded will cause issues on the phone when they are installed. To check if this is what’s causing the problem you will have to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  • When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

In case the issue does not occur in this mode then it is most likely caused by an app you installed. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

There are cases when the cached data stored in the dedicated partition of the phone can become corrupted. When this happens this this will usually result in issues occuring on the phone. To eliminate the possibility that this is what’s causing the problem you will have to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  • An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  • Press Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Perform a factory reset

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then chances are this is caused by a software glitch. The best way to deal with this right now is to perform a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the above steps fails to fix the problem then this could already be caused by a faulty hardware component. The best thing to do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
