How To Fix Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Text Message Notification Does Not Go Away

Problem: Hello, I’ve gone to everyone I can think of with my problem & no one can help. I love my phone. I don’t want to have to get rid of it plus I don’t have money for another lol. I have a Note 9… My problem is I have one contact that I never get messages from. Well, I would get A MESSAGE, but at first I didn’t know who it was from. It showed I had a message but there wouldn’t be anything there. In the past, I would simply click the 3 dogs at the top corner & mark all messages as read to remove the new message notification & after I found out it was that one friend, it was never really a problem because every time that happened, I would just call her or something to respond.. NOW HOWEVER, she has texted me a few times & I can’t clear the badge any more. It’s always telling me I have new messages when I don’t. If I try to clear it by actually going into messages & clicking on mark all messages as read, it keeps telling me that the app has stopped! If I try to clear it by just holding the messages app icon, it WILL clear for a few hours but then the “new messages” notification will appear again!! It’s so frustrating!! The other problem, which doesn’t bother me as much, but is strange, is that when I go to text that same friend, once I click send, the message disappears & if I go back into the messages app to check on the message, it’s not there either!! I’ve asked Samsung & mobile several times & no one has been able to help Me! They have reset my phone & clear data & cache & everything they can think of!! I really hope u can help me!! Thanks

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this device it is best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

Perform a soft reset

The first thing you will need to do in this case is to refresh the phone software by doing a soft reset. While this is effective when fixing an unresponsive device it is also recommended for this particular issue.

  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down key for up to 45 seconds.
  • Wait as the device restarts.

Once the phone starts try to check if the issue still occurs.

Clear the cache and data of the text messaging app

There are instances when corrupt temporary data stored in the messaging app could cause this problem. To check if this is the case you will have to clear the cache and data of your text messaging app.

  • From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  • Tap Settings > Apps.
  • Tap the desired application in the default list.
  • To display preinstalled apps, tap Menu > Show system apps.
  • Tap Storage > CLEAR CACHE > CLEAR DATA > DELETE

Try to check if the issue still occurs.

Make sure that you don’t have any numbers stored in the Block list

You might have placed a certain number from your contact in the block list of the phone which is why you are not getting any text messages from this contact.

  • From the Home screen, tap the Messages icon.
  • Tap Menu > Settings > Block numbers and messages > Block numbers.
  • Tap the minus sign next to the number you want to remove.
  • When finished, tap the back arrow.

Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode

There are instances when an app causes a conflict with the phone software which in turn can cause this problem. To check if an app is causing this issue you should start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  • When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

If the issue not occur in this mode then the problem could be caused by one of the apps you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

The phone will store cached data of apps in a dedicated partition in its internal storage. This data helps apps open faster making for a better mobile experience. There are however instances when this cached data can become corrupted and can cause issues with the device. To check if this is what’s causing the problem you should wipe the cache partition of the phone.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step to consider if the above steps fails to fix the problem is a factory reset. This will revert the phone back to its original factory condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this step.

  • Make sure that the phone is off.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.
  • Once the phone has fully started do not install any apps in your phone yet. Try to check first if the battery drains quickly.

If the above steps fails to fix the problem then you will need to try using a different SIM card in your phone as the problem could be caused by a faulty SIM and if this does not work then you should have this checked at a service center.
